On November 20, 2002, McDonald’s
Restaurants around the world celebrated

than 100 countries, the McDonald’s family raised more than
$12 million to benefit Ronald
McDonald House Charities
(RMHC) and other organizations around the world that
help children.
Here in Hawaii, the more than
$20,000 raised on that single
day last year went to Ronald
McDonald House Charities of
Hawaii, whose primary focus is
the support of Ronald McDonald House, a “home away from
home” for the families of seriously ill or injured children,
mainly from neighbor islands,
who must come to Honolulu for
life-saving treatment not available closer to home.
This year, McDonald’s is celebrating its 2nd Annual World
Children’s Day, not on a single
day, but over four days, from
Thursday, November 20,
through Sunday, November 23.
It is again an observance of the

House Charities do everywhere.

the world will be donating a

Dear Friends,
It has been our greatest
pleasure getting to know you.
We believe our family to have
been among the luckiest and
most fortunate of those that
were able to stay at the Ronald
McDonald House.
Since Katrina became ill, we
had nowhere to go when we
were told by her doctor that
she had to stay on Oahu for
three weeks to continue treatment necessary to control the
leukemia.
We were able to meet families
at the hospital from near and
far that had to leave many of
their loved ones behind while
being with the ones that were
ill. It made it clear that the
Ronald McDonald House is so
needed, especially when there
is an emergency in the family
and nowhere to go. This House
is like “home” where you can go
and feel the love and support,
and where your “worries” are
lifted and your concerns may
be solely based on the ill child
and being able to always be by
their side.
I have spent many weeks at
the Ronald McDonald House
and there were families that
were so much worse off than us
but yet there was a closeness
amongst all because we all had
a place to stay that lifted a lot of
other worries.
Thank you to those who have
diligently donated to this worthy cause and we pray that this
“special” House will always be
open to those who are less fortunate and in need of support at
such a traumatic time.

HOw It All Started
T
he idea of a home for families of
hospitalized children originated
in 1973 in Philadelphia, when Fred
Hill, a Philadelphia Eagles football
player, learned that his young daughter
Kim was critically ill with leukemia.
What followed were months of treatment at a faraway facility. The Hills,
desperate to be with their daughter, and
with nowhere else to go, spent countless hours at her bedside, napping on
chairs and pacing hospital corridors.
Out of this experience grew the determination to ease the burden for other families in similar circumstances. Hill’s
Eagle teammates banded together with
local McDonald’s restaurants and the
entire Philadelphia community to raise
funds to establish the first Ronald McDonald House – a “home away from
home” for families of children hospitalized with serious or life-threatening illnesses. The tremendous value and
success of the first House sparked interest throughout the entire country and
abroad. Today, there are more than 200
Ronald McDonald Houses throughout
the world. And what began as one
man’s effort to ease other parent’s pain,
has become an enduring tradition of
love and caring. e

children feel as though they just
can’t go home-they want to remain near their precious keiki.
But when hours turn into days,
lingering uncomfortably in hospital units and waiting rooms
with little privacy or rest and
not being able to take care of
many daily activities, it all becomes incredibly stressful.
This is why RMHC created
the Ronald McDonald House
Family Room inside Kapiolani
Medical Center for Women &
Children. This comfortable,
cozy home-like room, seconds
away from the Intensive Care
units, is a welcomed place of
respite for these families. Here,
weary parents and immediate
family members may take a
break, rest, gather strength, and
have some privacy or seek support from others who understand. Or they may have a bite
to eat, watch television, read,

hef Sam Choy is a great friend and supporter of RMHC Hawaii. Here’s a favorite recipe from Sam Choy’s Cooking with Kids cookbook for parents and
kids to enjoy preparing together. “Cooking is a fun way to have quality time
with the kids while making some ono-licious food for the whole family,” says
Chef Sam. “Have Fun!”
Li Hing Mui Ice Cake
1 cup orange soda
1 cup water
2 tablespoons li hing mui powder
6 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Chef Sam’s Tip:
Put less li hing mui powder
for a sweeter taste or more
for a sharper taste.
Thoroughly mix all ingredients together. Place
paper baking cups in an
8x8 inch baking pan for
ease of handling. Fill paper
cups about two-thirds full
to ensure that they don’t
overflow during freezing.
Place in freezer for about 1-1/2
hours. Remove from freezer,
stir each cup with chopstick
and return to freezer until
hard.

Here’s how it happened:
On March 6, 2001, I went to
my ultrascan appointment at
Kauai’s Wilcox Hospital. The
doctors examined me and didn’t have good news. My water
bag had ruptured. My obstetrician explained to my husband,
Frankie, and me that the

were slim if we decided to deliver then. Normally, babies
with less than 24 weeks gestation won’t survive, and if they

challenge, do not despair. Don’t stop
believing in Superman. There are heroes everywhere. You cannot see
their capes or tights. They move quietly and unassumingly among us.
They are the average Clark Kents.
