Cooking for the Pancake Breakfast! The first Saturday Pancake Breakfast of the season was on
November 8. Volunteer members Jean Clause,
Jeanne White, John Bowne, Carol Jiga, Martha
Neilsen and Mary Ann George did kitchen duty
and made it look easy.
Dressing for the Masquerade! John Rigg had just
the right hat. Check out more photos inside!
From the President:
December already. As they say down here, you know the
seasons are turning from the changing colors of the license plates rather than the leaves. I’m just grateful that
the onset of winter has lost the sense of urgency that
accompanied it for all those years in northern New England.
This month we will be tackling something which, while
perhaps not urgent, is, I believe, important to the future
of the SVCA - changing the organization from a 501c4
corporation to a 501c3 - which would enable us to solicit and accept taxdeductible contributions, as well as apply for a wide range of grants and other
funds.
In order to do this we need to amend our Bylaws to bring them into compliance
with the guidelines for a 501c3. To accomplish this we turned for assistance to
Wendy Deming, who is the Chief of Staff and Corporate Secretary at the Gulf
Coast Community Foundation. Wendy helped us make the necessary additions
and deletions to our existing bylaws - changes which can be viewed by following
the link at the top of our webEvery Sunday at the SVCA building

News from:
Friends of the Beach
By CHERRY GIOVINAZZO
FOB Chair and Beach Trust Liaison
The year round resident members of the Friends of the Beach are so very happy to
welcome back all our other members who recently returned to "Paradise": welcome back to the Clauses’, the Esposito’s, the Doty’s, the Neilsen’s, the Coutt’s, Pat
Wellington, the McHenry's and Sandy Tulenko. More will be returning this month
to make us 100% strong again.
We would like to thank all who came to the SVCA’s Masquerade Pasta Dinner. Our
Committee was happy to help with this SVCA fundraiser organized by Harriet Phillips by cooking, serving and
providing the music. To all our
volunteer workers thank you for
a job well done.
This fundraiser would not have
been as successful without contributions from two of our South
Venice
merchants.
Special
thanks go out to Benny, owner
of Bada Bing Italian Restaurant
on US41. Benny and his wife
Fran donated five gallons of
their delicious homemade pasta
sauce. They’ve just recently
started selling this great-tasting
sauce in jars. Benny and Fran
have been supportive of many
of the events that the Friends
have had, by always being happy to help with a donation. So
when you go to Bada Bing (and be sure to go!), take the time to thank Benny or
Fran for their generosity to our Community functions.
Special thanks also to Detwiler’s Farmers Market. This family has always helped
the FOB. They contributed all the apples for our Apple Crisp dessert. So please,
when you visit the market (if you haven’t been there, you’re missing something!),
seek out one of the sons, Henry, who is store manager and also their produce manager Armando and thank them.
By the way, we would like you to
know that the leftovers from the
Pasta Dinner were not wasted. We
donated it all to the South County
Food Pantry on South Tamiami
Frank Crabtree and Judy Azulay
Trail in Venice to support their
efforts feeding the homeless. We
Barbara Shaw
recently received a letter from Rosie Schroeder at the Food Pantry,
William and Marie Olsen
thanking us for our generosity.

What we’re reading
South Venice
Book Club
By Gail Parker, Chair
The Book Club had our first meeting of this season on Tuesday,
November 11 and chose the next book for discussion: it is Orphan Train by Kristina Baker Kline. It’s a story of friendship and
second chances, of upheaval and resilience, of unexpected
friendship, and of the secrets we carry that keep us from finding
out who we are.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 9 at 3:00pm at the Community Center, when we’ll be discussing and deciding on what
books we want to read over the coming five months.
This meeting will be our holiday celebration as well, and some
members are bringing treats to share. Feel free to do so as
well! We welcome any SVCA members who would like to join
our group. We have good discussions and always like to hear
new voices and opinions.
If you’d like any more information, feel free to contact me any
time at gaprk5@aol.com..

President’s Message (continued from Page One)
the proposed amendments, contact Karen at the office and she will print
one to either pick up or have mailed to you.
At the December General Meeting we would like to vote on the amended
bylaws so that the 501c3 process can proceed smoothly into the new year,
leading to what I and the other Board members, as well as many other
residents and members, believe will be a period of growth and financial
stability for your Civic Association.
To entice you to the meeting, we will be having a Holiday Potluck before
the meeting. Two members have offered to not only donate, but also prepare, a ham and a turkey for the dinner, so bring on your best appetizers,
sides, and desserts. We need you there for this vote.
Going forward into the new year, we will meet in January with representatives of the Englewood Water District to discuss their plans to expand sewer service into the portion of South Venice south of Colonial Rd. which falls
within their District and in February will hold a meeting with local FEMA
reps to discuss the newest revised flood maps. Also in January is the 2015
Business Expo, our showcase of not only local businesses, but of South
Venice itself. If you are a business owner or know of any businesses who
should be included, contact Elaine Jaffe.
Since I will not be returning to the Board next year, I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Board members for their continued willingness to work together to make this little corner of Florida a better place - a
place we all are proud to call home. I know that next year’s Board will continue in this spirit, working with all of us to improve our community.
I also want to thank the Trustees of the SVBET for their willingness to work
with us toward our common goals, Karen and Staci in the SVCA and SVBET
offices for their help, patience and understanding, everyone who has volunteered or contributed in any way to our activities over the past year and,
of course, all of you - the members - we wouldn’t be here without you.
News from the Friends of

(continued from page 2)
Have you noticed the new 40 foot flagpole on the
beach? That was a donation from Venice auctioneer
Neal Van De Ree and our thanks go to him! A volunteer crew, including several FOB’s, moved it from
Tamiami Trail to the Ferry House, then took it across
and installed it on the beach. Once it was up, the
FOB’s provided a nice big flag. It can be seen from the
Ferry house and it looks just beautiful. It serves as a
constant reminder to pray for and thank all our military personnel serving all over the world keeping our
country safe. Thanks to all of you who helped in making this another job well done.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank a special

All about community:
Reaching Out
Blair Post HAS, BC-HIS, ACA
Board Certiied Hearing Instrument Sciences
American Conference of Audioprosthology
At a recent presentation I had
a common question from the
start, “How do I get my husband
to get a hearing test?”
I wish I had a simple answer. The only answer I
have really come up with is to drag him in. If you
need to use a cave man club and drag him by the
hair…well, he may not have hair so that won’t work.
Seriously, I haven’t heard one answer that works
for all couples.
I’ve had wives who complained and nagged
enough that their husbands came in voluntarily.
Well, the husband thought it was their idea but had
the wife not nagged and complained the husband
probably would not have come in to see us.
I’ve had wives who started being more social
and leaving their husbands out of the social loop
since they were tired of repeating what everyone
said and every joke told during their social night
out.
I don’t recommend either. Being married myself
and watching my parents struggle with being
happily married, since my mom, MaryEllen, had a
severe hearing loss, I understand.
My goal is to reduce the frustrations that occur
between a couple, when the frustration is a hearing
loss. Helping to heal relationships has been one of
the most rewarding aspects of my career. I didn’t
know when I entered this industry that this was
part of the results when couples seek out solutions.
If you are the spouse getting frustrated
repeating everything, or tired of translating
everything, or feel like you’re their personal ears,
get them to come in and see me. I will let you know
if it really is selective hearing or a hearing loss that
can be addressed with hearing aids.

One of the goals of the South Venice Water Quality Task Force has been to reach
out to other communities and talk about
our Siesta Waterway Project and to encourage them to pursue environmental
projects in their neighborhoods.
On November 13, I spoke at the South
Gate Community Center about our Siesta
Waterway efforts. It was a group of about 20 people. South Gate
sits north of Bee Ridge and east of Rt. 41 in Sarasota. Phillippi
Creek runs through the subdivision, and the residents have issues with the creek and other waterways.
After I described our Siesta Waterway Project, I answered questions from the attendees. All of the questions were easy to answer except one. A gentleman

lived along Phillippi Creek. Then I thought about the group of
dedicated volunteers at our waterway. Very few, if any, live
along the Siesta Waterway. In fact, we have had volunteers who
don’t even live in South Venice. It never occurred to me that
anyone would not want to volunteer for our work if they didn’t
live along the waterway.
Our volunteers know that all of South Venice is our neighborhood and when we clean up the waterways it benefits the whole
area. When I told this story at the General Membership Meeting
on November 17, Sally Hagan reminded us that when we live
here in Southwest Florida, we ALL live on the water.
The Waterway volunteers are a hard working group who work in
the heat and humidity and never complain. We are so lucky to
have them in our neighborhood and our civic association.
Beautiful Neighborhoods
The next Beautiful Neighborhood Project cleanup is on Saturday,
December 20 at 8:30 a.m. The location isn’t finalized so watch
for the team email for that information.
In October and November, we cleaned up Alligator Drive from
the SVCA building right all the way up to Route 41!
Remember to bring large trash bags. In October, in the stretch of
road from the SVCA building to the Habitat for Humanity building, the trash buddies filled up their bags.
Thanks to everyone who volunteers for this project.
Wishing a very Happy New Year to all our SVCA
members and neighbors. May 2015 be a good year
for South Venice Beach!

Siesta Waterway Update
On October 25 and November 8, dedicated volunteers met at the Siesta Waterway
and spent several hours working along the waterway, removing weeds from among
the beautiful wild flowers that are taking hold.
The volunteers were: Harrison Fox, Don Jansen, Iona Wilson, Lynn Fox, Stephen
Brown, Marion Mendelson, Robert Mendelson, Laraine Jansen. As always, trash was
picked up. There is always trash, although the amount is smaller than it used to be.
Also in November, Stephen Brown and Harrison Fox spent time in the waterway pulling out invasive plants to
improve the
flow of water.

month. However, if you can spare a couple of hours in the
morning (9:00-11:00) please do. It will also be a ‘planning

The next workday will be January 10, and we’ll be planting

Sarasota County honors South Venice Water
Quality Task Force
On Wednesday, November 12, the South Venice Water Quality Task Force was presented
with an award from Keep Sarasota County
Beautiful at their awards dinner held at the
Circus Arts Conservatory Sailor Circus Arena in
Sarasota. The Adoption Award was for the
Water Quality Task Force’s work at the Siesta
Waterway.
Attending
the awards
ceremony were: Elaine Jaffe, Harrison and Lynn Fox, Carol Jiga, Ilona Wilson, Robert and Marion Mendelson, Don and Laraine Jansen and Rob Wright, the Sarasota County staff member
who has been pivotal in the success of the program.
The WQTF has adopted the Siesta Waterway through the Keep Sarasota County Beautiful
Adopt- A-Spot program. Since August 2013 (when the waterway was adopted by the WQTF),
volunteers have logged 254.50 hours working on the waterway. Almost 400 volunteer hours
were logged before the Adopt-A-Spot program. Most are labor hours, however many are volunteer administrative hours. Not included in those numbers are hundreds of hours spent by
volunteers in meetings at the SVCA and with Sarasota County staff. Approximately 60 individuals have volunteered to work at the Siesta Waterway since 2011. Thank you all.
And by the way, the Award will soon be on the wall in the SVCA office. Look for it!
