July 17, 2016 - Blessed Sacrament Church
Blessed Sacrament Church Rapid City, SD ‘Continuing the Work of Jesus…’ July 17, 2016 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish Office 4500 Jackson Boulevard Rapid City, SD 57702 605.342.3336 605.341.5668 FAX www.blessedsacramentchurch.org bsc@blessedsacramentchurch.org Pastor Fr. Brian Lane brian@blessedsacramentchurch.org Associate Pastor Fr. Matt Fallgren matt@blessedsacramentchurch.org Permanent Deacons Deacon Larry Kopriva lekopriva4@gmail.com Deacon Jim Van Loan jvl@mednettools.com Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday: 5:30pm LESS LIKE MARTHA AND MORE LIKE MARY! Most of us connect easily to the distracted and stressed Martha. Isn't she the one who is really doing what is right and taking care of Jesus? Isn't cooking and cleaning a basic part of true hospitality? Twice a year, when my mother hosted a couples bridge night, she would spend days cleaning the whole house (even upstairs and the basement!)! I sometimes wondered if she would be too tired after all that cleaning to play good bridge and be a pleasant host? I do believe that Jesus is inviting us to a form of hospitality that is deeper than a clean house and meal on the table. He is inviting us to welcome him into our home and our heart! If we want to welcome God as our guest, we need to open our door to our heart (not just our house). Studies are coming out now that say being perpetually connected and distracted by technology has in some cases temporarily lowered our IQ by 10 points. That is about as much as skipping a night's sleep! It begs the question that: If multiple distractions do this to our work life, what do they do to our spiritual/interior lives? Mary is practicing a new hospitality that welcomes Jesus into her home and her person. She sits at the feet of Jesus and takes His Word of Life into her heart, mind, soul, and strength. Sunday: 7:00am 9:00am 11:00am 1:30pm (in Spanish) Reconciliation Saturday, 3:30-4:30pm or by appointment Please note: it is a custom in our parish to pray three Hail Mary's after Mass for the next person who dies in our parish. I think the key to hospitality is to bring both Martha and Mary to the table of the Lord. There is a gift to invite and entertain an honored guest, but if God is at home in our heart, the experience will be all the richer for the depth of our encounter. Let's keep the light on and the heart open. Social Justice Commission “The inviolability of the person which is a reflection of the absolute inviolability of God, finds its primary and fundamental expression in the inviolability of human life. Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights-for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture- is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination. An Update from the Hope For New Life Jail Ministry - Father Ed Witt Joins the Ministry On occasion we like to share with you information about our Hope For New Life (HFNL) members. We have been blessed recently with the addition of Father Ed Witt from the Parish of St. Isaac Jogues to our ministry. He describes his jail ministry experience as follows: "In addition to serving as Catholic Chaplain for the Rapid City Police Department, for the past three months I have accompanied members of Hope For New Life Jail Ministry. I have been very impressed by the men and women of this ministry and the well organized program they conduct. It is obvious that they have charisms suited for jail ministry. They have an excellent rapport with the men and women prisoners who respect them and know that they themselves are respected. My only other experience of this kind of ministry was back in the 1990s when I assisted a fellow Jesuit at the prison in Waupon, Wisconsin. My role then was to hear Confessions and preside at Eucharist. Under the current circumstances, unfortunately, I am unable to offer Eucharist at the Pennington County Jail. However, I have heard Confessions at the jail. That has given me a wonderful opportunity to be an instrument of the Lord’s mercy in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. The honesty, humility, and contrition of the inmates has touched me profoundly. In the future I am hoping that we will be able to offer the Eucharist or conduct Communion services. In the meantime, I see my primary role as a support for the Hope For New Life team. Once in a while I am free to pinch hit for a member who may not be able to make it to the jail. I think that it is important that HFNL continue to be a lay driven ministry rather than a clerical one. I am delighted to accompany these dedicated HFNL ministers of God’s mercy." To learn more about the HFNL ministry, please contact Bill Gradoville at 341.2721. On July 25, 2016, the Church will celebrate the 48th Anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical on married love, Humanae Vitae, a timeless teaching, which is incredibly timely today! Pope Paul VI predicted that contraception would lead to a myriad of unintended consequences including marital infidelity, lower moral standards, a lessening of the “reverence due to a woman” and increased interference by the government into “the most personal and intimate responsibility of husband and wife.” Unfortunately, one doesn’t need to be a social scientist to see that his warnings were sadly prophetic. But there is hope! St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body increased the Church’s understanding of the beauty of married love, and scientific advances in Natural Family Planning have made it possible to responsibly live out the call to authentic married love in the 21st century. Come find out and celebrate how the timeless, yet timely, teaching of the Church is more relevant today than ever! Your prayers, your witness, your knowledge, and your willingness to share all of this can change our culture and change our world! Join us for a Celebration of Humanae Vitae, NFP and Married Love Including a Talk, Holy Hour and Reception St. Joseph Catholic Church, Spearfish, July 25, 6:308:30pm. For questions, call Amy Julian, 605.716.5214 x236 or email ajulian@diorc.org RSVP’s are not necessary, but are appreciated to help us plan!
