The Marist boys involved were: Declan Oswald, Brendan Thomas, Luis Alarcon, Suita Tai, Joshua Bennett, Joshua Sims, Connor Campbell, James McNally, Zac Jackson-Calway, James Correll, Nathan Exton, Daniel Chandler, Joe Whyte and Josh Pecovnik. Finally, thanks to Elizabeth Smith and Toni Clark for the considerable amount of work they did in the lead-up to this event. Overall the night was a terrific success with the event raising a considerable amount for HOME in Queanbeyan. Well done boys! Margaret Smith – Head of Performing Arts Ausdance Youth Dance Festival 2014 Congratulations to the following boys who participated in this year’s Ausdance Youth Dance Festival: Mark Casao Josh Chin Doug Donelly Sam Fotu Gus Grimes Patrick Jackson Cameron McKendry James Nguyen Joshua Walsh The boys worked very hard during Terms 2 and 3 to prepare a brilliant piece of dance that they presented last Wednesday evening, 17 September, at the Submissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Youth Dance Festival. Their performance was one of the highlights of the evening and they received very positive feedback from the Ausdance co-ordinators. It was a pleasure to work with a dedicated and motivated group of boys who have a passion for dance, and I am sure they gained much from the experience. Many of these boys have been participating for most of the time they have been at Marist. The College has been participating in the Youth Dance Festival since it began 30 years ago. We are always looking for boys who would like to join the dance team. Please contact Mrs Billingham if you are interested in being part of next year’s group. We hope the boys have enjoyed Term Three and that you all enjoy the upcoming holidays. To our families and staff members who are travelling over the break, we ask that St Marcellin Champagnat continues to watch over you all to keep you safe. To Mr Eamonn Moore who is enjoying Long Service Leave at present, we wish him all the best as he enjoys the last few weeks of his leave before returning to school at the beginning of Term Four. A few reminders Term Four Uniform – Blazers do not have to be worn during Term 4 and only Year 6 boys may choose to wear long trousers during Term 4. Year 4 and 5 boys wear shorts during Terms 4 and 1. All Junior School boys require a College bucket hat to play at lunch time, recess as well during PE and Sports lessons. Meeting with members of Staff – When you would like a meeting time with a Junior School teacher, we ask that you email the teacher or call the Front Office to make a suitable time. Please be mindful that the time before school starts each morning is preparation time for teachers and impromptu meetings cannot be accommodated. Visiting the Junior School – When you visit the Junior School, please ensure that you sign the visitors’ book at the Front Office so that we have an accurate record of visitors to the College. This is especially important should there be an emergency as we need to account for everyone on campus at a given time. Boys not returning in 2015 – As notified in previous newsletters, if your son is not returning to the College in 2015, you are asked to notify the Headmaster Mr Sidorko in writing. We recommend you use Marr Street or Biddlecombe Street for drop-off and pick-up. A drop-off/pick-up bay is available in front of the school on Marr Street. From the beginning of Term 4, we change to our summer uniform which is outlined below. As usual, boys are expected to wear the correct uniform in a neat fashion. Years 4 - 12: Grey College shorts with black belt, or long grey College trousers with black belt. If wearing shorts: If wearing trousers: Short grey Marist socks. Plain black or grey socks. Years 4 - 10: Grey crested shirt without a tie. If you use this bay, please drive forward as space becomes available in order to allow vehicles to enter so as not to cause congestion on Marr Street or to affect bus access to Driveway 1. Please note the ‘No Stopping’ signage that is posted on Marr Street. There have been recent cases of double-parking on Marr Street which effects the flow of traffic, potentially endangers students and other road users, and delays the timely arrival of buses. ACT Police and ACTION supervisors monitor this area and can issue fines. Parents are also asked to respect the privacy and accessibility of the College’s neighbours in Marr Street by not parking across their driveways, on their lawns or entering their properties. Boys should not walk through the unit complexes to meet their families but should use the adjacent parkland. We seek to maintain a cordial relationship with our neighbours and ask for your support in maintaining the flow of traffic and the safety of all members of the College community. Years 11 - 12: Blue crested shirt, with or without a tie. Ties are optional for Years 11 and 12, only when worn correctly (with top shirt button done up). A reminder there is also no vehicular entry to Gate 2 from Marr Street during the morning and afternoon bus times (8.00am – 8.45am and 3.00pm – 4.00pm). Reminder about appropriate hairstyles All students are reminded that hair is to be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, be of natural colour, out of the eyes, of even grade and no shorter than a hairdresser’s number three comb. Extremes in hairstyle are to be avoided. Hair should also not be tied or pinned up. Boys are to be clean shaven, with sideburns not extending beyond the middle of the ear. The Deputy Headmaster or the student’s House Dean will determine what is an acceptable College hairstyle if there is doubt about the suitability of a hairstyle. Not of even grade. Not of even grade and less than a number 3 comb. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. Chris Morrissey – Deputy Headmaster Submissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au Marist college enews - 24 September 2014 Year 6 Brothers Together The Year 6 Brothers Together program was held last Tuesday and Wednesday, and centred on the theme of ‘Family Spirit’, which is one of the five pillars of Marist Spirituality. The Year 11 Marist Youth Ministry Team prepared and delivered the one hour program for the Year 6 students which included drama, games, personal sharings and a liturgy. “I was so impressed with the Year 11 Marist Youth Ministry boys. They were well prepared, full of enthusiasm, the content was at just the right level for the boys and they made it interesting and funny which held the Year 6 boys’ attention. Apart from all of that, they spoke with sincerity, and in the small groups they shared generously of their own experiences and listened to each boy. It was wonderful to hear the Year 11 boys speak so positively about the House Groups. I am sure this will give the Year 6 boys confidence about their move to the Senior School. The Year 11 boys showed they are exceptional young men who are carrying on the Marist tradition.” Monica Simpson, Junior School teacher. Congratulations to Mimi Chen and Terence Pereira for their leadership of the Year 11 Marist Youth Ministry Team. Year 11 Forum Last weekend, Josh Freeman and I had the privilege of attending the Marist Year 11 Youth Forum at the Brothers Hermitage in Mittagong. The theme of social justice played a role in all of the games, activities and sessions we took part in. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet and make friends with students our age for whom we share our Marist identity. One session included a talk from two young adults who were agents of change and were inspirational to us all. One of the most memorable experiences during the Forum was singing ‘Sub Tuum’ together, not having practised prior to singing it. Thank you to Mr Ahearne for the opportunity and to Ms Chen for accompanying us for the weekend. Submissions: news@mcc.act.edu.au Enquiries: (02) 6298 7200 The Marist Mountain Biking Club attended the ACT School Championships on Friday 29 August, and were well represented with 15 riders making up five teams of powerful cross country racers. The relay format saw one rider at a time doing a four to seven kilometre lap before tagging his team member, and resting weary legs before the next lap quickly came around. Racing was fast and furious on a fun yet challenging course which saw an unprecedented number of punctures! The stunning weather combined with the friendly, fun atmosphere of the event made it a great day. All teams rode hard but unfortunately did not achieve any podium finishes. Weekly training/ social riding continues every Wednesday at Stromlo. Email deanmoran@mcc.act.edu.au to join. Web: www.maristc.act.edu.au
