MARIST COLLEGE Catholic School for Girls
MARIST COLLEGE
Catholic School for Girls
Term 2 - Number 03
Friday 8th May, 2015
YEARS 7 TO 13
KEY DATES
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are now into our 12th week of school - nearly forty percent of the academic
year for senior students. In Week 6, they will sit their external standards. The
message of the Academic Committee as noted by Deborah Hady our Academic
Leader is clear. Success is built over time, so don’t procrastinate. Start now.
On Mondays after school the library is open and is attended by a staff member to
assist students. There is a computer room open every day after school and on
Thursdays the students run Co-Lab.
At this session, senior students are there to assist younger students with their
work and different staff attend to offer tutorials in their subject areas.
Classrooms and computer rooms are open. Many students stay till five, though
the session officially ends at 4:30.
If your daughter would like support with her studies, please encourage her to attend.
Deputy Principal
ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY
Wednesday started with an assembly ran by the Academic Committee. The
committee introduced this year's Academic Theme - Success Under Construction.
Whatever our personal definition of success is, we have to understand that the road to
success has its bumps and obstacles. However, with resilience, we will bounce back
from each pitfall and continue to build our success. Just like building a building, you
need lots of tools to reach your goals! Hard work, patience and persistence will help
you achieve your success. CUT out all your distractions, HIT the books and then you
can NAIL those exams! The road to success is always under construction.
The assembly finished with a spelling bee between each year level dean, and an
impromptu sing along to Mary Poppins' Supercalifragilisticexpiliadocious. Keep an eye
out for the upcoming spelling bee.
The committee also encouraged girls to come to Co Lab, an after school homework
and tutoring center. It runs on Thursdays in the Food Tech Room. Co Lab provides
students with a study space to do their homework, study for internals or tests, and get
extra help. Teachers and Senior students are there to help out, afternoon tea is also
provided and the computer room is open.
Thank you to the teachers who
showed their amazing spelling and
rapping skills, to the girls who helped
with the video and to Angeline Tulilo
-Siilata. Thank you to those who
help with the running of Co-Lab so
far.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving
As a mother protects her children, watching
over them day by day, alert to danger, and
ready if necessary to sacrifice herself for
their sakes, so you Lord protect, your arms
constantly encircling us, your hands
delivering us from harm. For the intensity of
your love, Lord Jesus we thank you. Loving
God, we thank you for mothers – for all
they mean or have meant, for the love they
have shown and the care they have given.
We thank you for the qualities of mothers –
their patience, their kindness, concern and
understanding. We thank you for the part
they play in our lives, and we thank you for
this day of saying ‘thank you’ this
opportunity to say what we so often mean
to say but so rarely do. For mothers and
motherhood, for children and families we
bring you this day our grateful praise.
Amen.
Marist College,
can we learn it?
Yes we can!

THE YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
Pope Francis announced that the year 2015 will be dedicated to the Consecrated Life, and he is asking
all those in the Consecrated Life, that is religious sisters, brothers and priests, to "wake up the world"
with their testimony of faith, holiness and hope.
Our College was started in 1928 by the Marist Sisters. They ran and staffed the College with Sister
Juliana Massey serving as the last religious Principal from 1968 - 1990. The Sisters continued as the
Proprietors of the College until 2001, when they gifted the school to the Roman Catholic Bishop of
Auckland. We are proud of our Marist heritage and to date retain a strong relationship with the Marist
Sisters. Therefore in this “Year of Consecrated Life” we would like to take the opportunity to introduce
to the community one of the Marist Sisters each week so that you get to know them better, but, more
importantly, to acknowledge their dedication and service to God and the community.
