The Blazer Bee BUZZ!!! East Hill Elementary Kent, WA 253.373.7455 Dr. Brian Patrick, Interim Principal School Website: http://www.kent.k12.wa.us/ksd/EH/index.html June 18, 2015 From the Principal’s desk… Here we are! Another school year in the books. We will miss the students over the summer, but it is a great time for teachers to rest, recharge and do some strategic planning for next year. We have some ambitious changes at East Hill next year, and we are already excited for 2015-16. Summer Reading In the summer, many students can lose some of the reading progress that they made during the school year. This is called “summer reading loss”. There is a simple way to make sure that this does not happen to your child: HAVE THEM READ OVER THE SUMMER! Studies have shown that students who read as few as 6 books over the summer can maintain their current reading level from the end of the school year. Of course, students who read MORE can increase their reading level over the summer. Students who do not read over the summer can LOSE up to 3 months of reading progress, progress that needs to be make up during the next school year. Over time, this gap can get so large that it is pretty hard to catch up. SO……. EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ IN SUMMER! We provided free books to our students who are struggling in reading and we are going to look for ways to connect with families aver the summer to make sure kids keep reading. So let’s all: READ THIS SUMMER!! Changes at East Hill Next Year Staff Farewells There are some folks who will be leaving Est Hill over the summer. We congratulate them on their new adventures, but will miss their skill and dedication to our students and families. We will miss them! Mrs. Kim is moving to the Snoqualmie Valley School District Ms. Clifton is moving to Tacoma Mrs. Whitney is retiring Mrs. Onorati is retiring Mrs. Arlin is retiring We wish these talented and wonderful folks the very, very best as they move on. We know that they will continue to serve children, because that is what educators do best! Breakfast After the Bell New this fall, all students at East Hill will receive both breakfast and lunch FREE, at school, every day. As students begin their day be picking up their breakfast and eating it in their classroom. We are combining breakfast with a daily morning meeting to start our day in a calm, relaxed atmosphere, setting the stage for a productive day of learning. The teachers will be sharing instruction on social skills, problem solving and other important life skills during the morning meetings. Have a lovely summer, everyone!
