September 2015 Faith United Church, UCC Matters of Faith Sunday Worship 10:00 a.m. The Wednesday Morning Study Group will kick off a new season with a book by John Phillip Newell called The Rebirthing of God: Christianity’s Struggle for New Beginnings. It sounds like just our kind of book… here’s a review from amazon. com: “In this insightful and illuminating work, Newell (Listening for the Heartbeat of God) explores chapter by chapter themes of connecting (with the earth, compassion, light, journey, spiritual practice, nonviolence, unconscious, love) in order to reclaim Christianity’s understanding of being ‘born anew’ and of resurrection. Drawing from his experience with the Iona community in Scotland, as well as other spiritual sites, such as Taize in France, Newell offers illustrations from his ministry, family life, and dreams to ‘[allow] ourselves to dream the Christian story onward.’ He gleans wisdom from a diverse group of spiritual practitioners from Columba and Julian of Norwich to Thomas Berry and Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as from numerous faith traditions, contending that ‘bringing our heart into union with the heart of the other is the basis of true freedom.’ Asserting that ‘[c]ompassionate action is sustained by the courage to feel,’ Newell’s work Fellowship Hour 11:00 a.m. carries practical implications, as he argues that clergy need as much training in spiritual practices such as contemplative prayer, as in beliefs. This accessible and thought-provoking book has much to offer pilgrims on all stages of the spiritual journey.” Pastor Sue has ordered 8 hardback copies at a cost of $17.00 each. She will order more as needed. Those who wish to read this book on their kindle device or app can download it for $9.99. Stop in the office if you’d like to purchase a copy. We will begin meeting on Wednesday, September 9th at 10:15 in the Fireside Room and we will discuss the introduction to the book. No Potluck for September Sue’s Views Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’ ~ Matthew 25:37-40, The Message For several years, not many people noticed the red car that moved around the church in the summer, following the shade and parking in our shady parking lot in the afternoons and out front in the mornings. That is, not many people noticed until this year when the car would no longer run and stayed on the far side of our parking lot all day long. I’m pretty sure the neighbor said she could park sideways along the edge of his property in order to take advantage of as much shade provided by his large trees as possible. A couple of church women invited the owner of the car to come to worship and she has been joining us regularly, even staying for coffee hour, where a few people have visited with her and enjoyed getting acquainted. She has felt so welcomed! But now… even she has heard the complaints. What kind of welcome is that? We have been presented with an opportunity to live out Jesus’ teachings about hospitality and loving our neighbor and “doing unto the least of these.” What a wonderful example we are setting for the community! A church that lives the gospel!! And you know what? Our next-door neighbor and his family have provided her with a vehicle—one that will run! Another example of people living out the gospel directive to care for others. There’s an old saying that you can’t understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. Most of us will never have a clue what it would be like to be homeless, but too many people in our society have fallen into circumstances that put them in that category or maybe just a paycheck away. The best thing we can do is “not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2, NRSV). Love and Blessings, ~ Pastor Sue Page 2 n Misstio e h of Month Tomato Zucchini Casserole For all that zucchini that your neighbor leaves on your doorstep. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups grated Cheddar cheese 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 2 cloves garlic, minced salt and pepper to taste 2 medium zucchinis, thinly sliced 5 plum tomatoes, thinly sliced 1/4 cup butter 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 3/4 cup fine bread crumbs Recipe Corner Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly butter a 9x9-inch pan. In a large bowl, combine Cheddar, Parmesan, oregano, basil, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper, and set aside. Arrange half of the zucchini slices in the pan. Sprinkle 1/4 of the cheese and herb mixture on top. Arrange half of the tomatoes, and top with another 1/4 of the cheese mixture. Repeat layers. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in onions, and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in breadcrumbs; cook until they have absorbed the butter. Sprinkle on top of casserole. Cover loosely with foil, and bake in a preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and bake until the top is crusty and the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Last November when I was almost completely exhausted from hauling furniture into my new house, a nice neighbor lady walked over with this house warming snack. My husband wasn’t exactly ‘on the ball’ after that and I was able to get just a taste before he finished it off. “You have to get that recipe!” He exclaimed. Well here it is! We have moved many more times than the average person and only once have we received any welcoming. ~ Stephanie No Bake Chex Mix ~ Norma Krats Ingredients 12 oz. oil 1 package Hidden Valley Ranch Mix 2 Tbsp. dill weed 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/2 tsp garlic powder Various Chex Cereal, Pretzels and Nuts Directions Mix all dressing ingredients in a bowl. Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.” - Ephesians 6: 4 (The Message) Though we’ve all heard the proverb, “Spare the rod, spoil the child,” Paul seems to me wiser when he cautions fathers to take care not to provoke or exasperate their children by coming down hard on them. Harsh words, relentless criticism, or angry outbursts from a father can disfigure a child’s soul and cripple their spirit. Moreover, such behaviors aren’t what it means to be a father. But parents aren’t perfect. Parents too need forgiveness. I remember the first time I asked one of my sons to forgive me for some harsh and angry words I had spoken to him. It wasn’t easy to say, “I’m sorry, I was wrong; I shouldn’t have said that. Forgive me.” I think my son was ten at the time. It’s easy for Dads, facing their own pressures and frustrations, to bark at their children. But it’s no good, especially when it becomes habitual. Still, Paul is not saying that the alternative is anything goes or that being a good Dad, or good parents, is just letting our children do whatever they want or giving them the idea that the world revolves around them. That’s the other extreme and not much good either. No, our children really do need guidance and direction, given with gentleness and patience. And they need us to point them, as we point ourselves, to Christ and his way. Prayer Dear God, being a father is such an awesome responsibility and wondrous gift. Thank you for showing us your way and your grace in Jesus, so that we may show it to our children. Amen.
