2012 - Community Food Bank of Central Alabama
Annual Report 2012 a note to our Friends and Supporters Dear Friends, Though we celebrated our 30th anniversary this year, 2012 proved to be a difficult year. Our USDA TEFAP Commodities food was down over a million pounds compared to the year before, and it was, by all respects, the most difficult year we have experienced in the recent past. Despite this challenge, we did all we could to address the issue of chronic hunger in our community. We did this through the continued growth of our hunger relief programs. Specifically our Weekenders Backpack Program and Produce in Pantries Program continued record growth. As a team at the Food Bank, we tried each day to place a face to the food we distributed, paying attention to the fact that every bit of food that leaves our door ends up on a plate, at a family dinner table, contributing to more than just full bellies, but full lives. We believe in what we do and we believe that the food we distribute and the programs we operate make a difference in families’ lives across Central Alabama. We continue to be humbled daily by the support and care you, our friends and supporters, show for our mission. Together, we can make a difference in solving hunger in Central Alabama. The mission of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is to serve people in need by securing and storing surplus food and household items and distributing it through local partnering service agencies. With Thanks, David Bell President, Board of Directors Mary Michael Kelley Executive Director after 30 years, We're working to make a Difference Just like DaY one A grant of $100,000 from the Greater Birmingham Foundation made it possible for the Food Bank to open its doors on December 1, 1982. At that time, service was provided to Jefferson, Shelby, and Walker counties. The planning was done by volunteers from the community and the Planning department of United Way of Central Alabama. Over the last 30 years, the number of counties served by the Food Bank has increased from 3 to 12 and the number of agencies distributing food in Central Alabama has increased from 30 to over 200. 30 Years of Feeding Families The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama currently serves the following counties: • Blount • Calhoun • Cherokee • Clay • Cleburne • Etowah • Jefferson • Shelby • St. Clair • Talladega • Walker • Winston We receive food from Feeding America (a national food bank network with more than 200 food bank members) from government agencies, national donors, local donors and additional food is purchased with monies allocated in our budget. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. Without these volunteers, backpacks wouldn’t be packed, food would not be sorted, and lives would not be changed. We also rely heavily on the food drives that multiple businesses, organizations, and individuals facilitate within their communities. Did you know that in 2012 our produce distribution increased compared to the year before by more than 25%? Moving forward we will focus on healthy foods that make a difference in the well-being of the families in our service area. Now THAT’S something to be proud of… We were fortunuate to have many new food drives this year that engaged many seasoned volunteers. The truth is, we couldn’t do what we do without every single piece of food that comes through our door, which also includes our Retail Store Donation program, where the food bank picks up food from multiple retailers throughout our service area. This program continues to grow, and now serves as a vital source of food for our many member agencies. Member Agencies The Food Bank relies on its 224 member agencies to distribute food to those who are hungry in our service area. These agencies are made up of 501c3 organizations and faith based groups. Most of these agencies are staffed by volunteers who band together to create thriving food programs in their communities. Because of these dedicated agencies we are able to carry out our mission from year to year. 2012 was a year of outreach and growth for our member agencies. There were 21 new member agencies approved representing six different counties within our service area. We specifically focused on outreach around the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. This program supplies those who qualify with the ability to purchase predetermined food items. For clients of food pantries this means that they are able to buy items that they might not receive at a food pantry such as flour, milk, or eggs. On April 24 the annual agency relations meeting was held. Forty-seven agencies were in attendance. Ms. Cassandra Jones, Food Assistance Supervisor with Jefferson County DHR, served as the guest speaker. She shared with the agency representative’s information on the SNAP program that they could take back to their clients to assist them in applying for SNAP benefits. Taylor Clark of Rev Birmingham also shared information on farmer’s markets accepting EBT cards. On June 13 we continued our SNAP outreach. We had 18 representatives from 8 different agencies attend. Representatives from the Bay Area Food Bank conducted the training. Attending agencies were trained in completing the application process. An additional training was held in October. We are excited for the future and hope to continue to build our agencies capacity and expand outreach in underserved areas. During this year the program grew from approximately 1,300 children in five schools to over 1,500 children in seven schools, with at least 12 new schools and approximately 750 additional children set to join the program next year. Our ability to support this rapid growth was due in large part to increased financial support received from corporations, organizations, and individuals throughout our community. One local corporation sponsored each of the 440 students attending one of the schools added this year. Volunteers also benefited this year from the design and construction of a dedicated Weekenders Backpack area of the warehouse, accomplished through a generous donation from C & S Wholesale Grocers. The program still has a long way to go to achieve its goal of eliminating weekend food insecurity for children in our service area and we are making strides towards achieving that goal. financials SUPPORT AND REVENUE FY2012 Unrestricted Contributions $367,181 United Way $305,400 ASSETS FY2011 Temporarily Restricted $207,208 Total Unrestricted $574,389 $324,274 $305,400 $350,000 Temporarily Restricted $87,788 Total USDA Food Commodities USDA Warehouse/ Distribution Support FEMA Support CPPW Grant Program Service Fees Interest Income Satisfaction of Restrictions TOTAL SUPPORT & REVENUE $2,299,962 $222,327 $222,327 $112,880 $112,880 $22,591 $22,591 $7,583 $7,583 $97,161 $97,161 $72,057 $72,057 $765,568 $765,568 $722,199 $722,199 $6,758 $6,758 $10,384 $10,384 $4,253,623 $3,412 $4,257,035 $97,299 ($97,299) $3,996,638 $(9,511) $3,987,127 EXPENSES $4,116,091 $4,116,091 $3,799,914 $3,799,914 Management & General $108,773 $108,773 $102,962 $102,962 $69,302 $69,302 $70,492 $70,492 $4,294,166 $4,294,166 $3,973,368 $3,973,368 Total Expenses $484,317 $483,452 $59,556 $56,527 $162,484 $209,373 Total Current Assets $1,423,457 $1,572,008 Property and Equipment, net $1,193,042 $1,090,070 Total Assets $2,616,499 $2,662,078 LIABILITIES & NET ASSETS Accrued Expenses Change in Net Assets $(40,543) $3,412 $(37,131) $23,270 $(9,511) $13,759 Net Assets, Beginning of Year $2,360,148 $155,558 $2,515,706 $2,336,878 $165,069 $2,501,947 Net Assets, End of Year $2,319,605 $158,970 $2,478,575 $2,360,148 $155,558 $2,515,706 FY2012 FY2011 $4,724 $6,039 Accounts Payable $793 $37,543 Deferred Revenue $132,407 $102,790 Total Current Liabilities $137,924 $146,372 Unrestricted Net Assets $2,319,605 $2,360,148 $158,970 $155,558 Total Net Assets $2,478,575 $2,515,706 Total Liabilities & Net Assets $2,616,499 $2,662,078 Temporarily Restricted Net Assets Commodity Distribution Fundraising Investments Food Inventory $2,299,962 ($203,796) $810,450 $350,000 $2,262,841 $203,796 $717,100 Accounts Receivable, net $2,262,841 FY2011 Cash $412,062 Grants and Contracts FY2012 Making a difference: one full belly at a time Just a few facts to share from 2012. 526,000 1,300 people served 21 new member agencies children served through Weekenders Backpack Program 543,000 Community Food Bank of Central alabama distribution process Donations and purchased food • Manufacturers • Distributors • Retailers • Individuals • Food growers • Wholesalers • Vendors • USDA • Feeding America Community Food Bank of Central Alabama • Procuring • Processing • Organizing • Warehousing • Allocating • Distributing pounds of fresh produce distributed Network Partners 7.4 million • Food pantries • Soup kitchens • Shelters • Community centers • Children’s programs • Faith-based organziations pounds distributed Those in Need A tough year was made brighter by so many volunteers and donors like you! • Homeless • Children • Elderly • Disabled • Working poor • Under/unemployed • Physically or mentally ill • Victims of natural disasters network partners 200,000+ lbs.
