Brookland Northeast - God’s Vision and Our Faithful Stewardship
As the Brookland Northeast (BNE) church approaches its fourth year in
ministry, it continues to grow spiritually and numerically. Over the past years,
the church has created a holistic ministry to meet the needs of the growing
Richland northeast community.
Front View
Last April, the church broke ground on phase one of its building project. Phase
one, which is the multipurpose building, will serve as the temporary sanctuary
to seat 600 congregants, administrative offices and Sunday school classrooms.
However, the phase one project was delayed for four months when World War
II practice bombs where found on the property on Summit Parkway. After the
bombs where removed, construction began in August and currently is on
schedule. Phase two will consist of a 1,200 seat sanctuary, additional
Pastor Jackson
classrooms and administrative offices. The multipurpose building will be
turned into the fellowship hall.
“We will make an announcement during the first week of July after we are given
a definite move-in date. We will also provide a schedule of dedicatory activities
to coincide with our first week of worship at the new church." said Reverend
Chris Leevy Johnson, BNE Campus Pastor. Pastor Johnson has also expressed
that since construction has commenced, it has been a seamless and smooth
Side View
process. The church is being constructed by CDI Construction Company, a
member of Brookland. The project coordinator is Max Morgan who works for
CDI and attends Brookland Northeast. The church's project manager is Deacon Raymond Perkins. "We have been
blessed to have some committed and dedicated persons involved in the building process who are deeply connected
to our church." said Pastor Leevy Johnson. "Additionally, the faithful Christians who call Brookland Northeast
their spiritual home have been patient and steadfast in their stewardship to make God’s vision for His people a
reality."
While the building is being built, the church continues to build the body of Christ. Two years ago, Pastor Leevy
Johnson and the ministry development team created a separate worship experience for the church teenagers. Those
persons between the age of 13 and 19 have their own worship service every fourth Sunday throughout the entire
year. Also last year, the teen ministry developed a Teen Academy to foster mentoring and to develop leadership
skills for our teens. The first graduating class of the BNE Teen Academy was held on Friday, June 8th at Hope
Academy. On the second Sunday in June, the BNE church will have its second annual Cap and Gown Sunday to
recognize fifth grade, eighth grade, high school, college and graduate school graduates. One of the primary focuses
of the BNE church is the development of its children. "We truly believe that we are the Joshua Generation. Where
Pastor Jackson and our forefathers have brought us this far leaning and depending on Jesus, it is our God given
responsibility to prepare the next generation of saints for kingdom living. This charge begins with teaching our
children the same Christian principles that are the foundation of our faith." Eyes have not seen nor ears have heard
what God has in store for the Brookland Northeast church.

Men’s Day 2012
“Essence of A Man: Listening, Learning and Leading to God’s Word”
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the
word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at
himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the
perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he
will be blessed in what he does.” James 1:22-25

Congratulations Candace Jackson
Candace Jackson will be serving, by Presidential Appointment, as Special Advisor to
the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) of the United States
Department of Commerce.
The MBDA is the only federal agency tasked to create new jobs by expanding the
U.S. economy through the nation's over 5.8 million minority-owned and operated
businesses. Many of these businesses make significant contributions to the national
innovation base and represent a long-term contributor to exports.
Thus, in the capacity of Special Advisor, Ms. Jackson will be working closely with
the International Trade Administration and the White House in helping to
successfully expose businesses to the global marketplace and increase their
competitiveness internationally. At times, her work will also require collaborations with the Office of
General Counsel at Commerce, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, Export-Import Bank and the
U.S. Trade and Development Agency.
Concerning her new appointment, Candace summarized her feelings, “I look forward to the opportunity to
help impact economic development, create new jobs, provide tools to strengthen and sustain existing
minority-owned businesses, and participate in trade missions.”

Financial Empowerment Sunday - June 17th
On the third Sunday in June, Mr. O’Neal Smalls will be our featured author. He will
have a table in the narthex of the main sanctuary after both services on June 17th to
display, discuss and sell his book, “Blessed Be The Ties That Binds”.
Book Summary: Freewoods, S.C., was founded by freed slaves in the 1860s. Smalls,
a retired law professor, grew up there in the 1950s, and in this work, based on his
memories and extensive interviews, he chronicles the year 1955, during the early days
of the civil rights movement following Brown v. Board of Education and facing the still
active KKK.
Financial Empowerment Sunday (FES) is a monthly event that will feature businesses owned by members
of Brookland Baptist. FES is part of an ongoing effort to promote African-American economic
empowerment and all Brookland worship service attendees are strongly encouraged to financially support
these featured businesses.
Please stop by Mr. Smalls’ table in the narthex after worship service on June 17th.

Celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs)
As many of our families celebrate the graduation of their children from high school and as they make plans
to send them to institutions of higher learning, we want to take this time to celebrate the history and legacy of
historically black colleges and universities (HCBUs).
HBCUs are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established
before 1964 with the intention of serving the Black community.
There are 105 HBCUs in the United States today, including public and private, twoyear and four-year institutions, medical schools and community colleges. All are or
were in the former slave states and territories of the U.S. except for Central State
University (Ohio), Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Lewis College of Business
(Detroit, Michigan), Lincoln University (Pennsylvania), Wilberforce University
(Ohio), and now-defunct Western University (Kansas). Most HBCUs were founded
after the Civil War.
First Historically Black Colleges
Cheyney University of Pennsylvania - 1837
University of the District of Columbia - 1851

Celebration of HBCUs cont’d
It is difficult to discuss HCBUs without mentioning the bands. Many of these bands are legendary!
is a partial list of some well-known Black college marching bands and their nicknames.
Below
Notable HCBU Bands
Howard University - “Showtime”
Florida A&M - “Marching 100”
Southern University - “Human Jukebox”
Clark Atlanta - “The Mighty Marching Panthers”
Prairie View - “Marching Storm”
Tuskegee University - Self proclaimed “The Best Band in the Land”
Virginia State - “Trojan Explosion”
Grambling State University - “Tiger Marching Band”
Bethune-Cookman University - “The Marching Wildcats”
Selected Accomplishments of HCBU’s
 More than 80 percent of all Black Americans who received degrees in medicine and dentistry
were trained at the two traditionally black institutions of medicine and dentistry--Howard
University and Meharry Medical College. (Today, these institutions still account for 19.7 percent
of degrees awarded in medicine and dentistry to black students.)
 HBCUs have provided undergraduate training for three fourths of all Black persons holding a
doctorate degree; three fourths of all Black officers in the armed forces; and four fifths of all
Black federal judges.
 HBCUs are leading institutions in awarding baccalaureate degrees to Black students in the life
sciences, physical sciences mathematics, and engineering.
 HBCUs continue to rank high in terms of the proportion of graduates who pursue and complete
graduate and professional training.
 Fifty percent of Black faculty in traditionally white research universities received their bachelor's
degrees at an HBCU.
 HBCUs offer a more supportive educational setting for students encountering some difficulty in
realizing their full academic potential.

The students studied God’s word learning important values to include stewardship, the principle of tithing/
giving, and most importantly eternal life. We, the Financial Ministry, would like to thank the parents for
allowing us to provide instruction to their children using Proverbs 22:6 as our guiding force “Train up a
child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We are extremely proud of
the six graduates and we encourage you to congratulate them for this amazing accomplishment. Each
student took a graduation photo and wrote a letter to the ministry about their experience.

“Thank you for giving me this opportunity to take this class. This class not
only showed me how to save money, but it also taught me the importance of
reading the bible and learning bible verses. I learned a lot from the jar
exercise which taught us how to give, save, and spend.”
Shakira Crawford 9 years old
“ This class taught me how important it is for us to bless other people. I also
learned that everything belongs to God and we are responsible for taking care
of it.”
Gabrielle Washington 12 years old
“I learned that when you give money or spend money that it all belongs to the
Lord and that you should spend money the way that He would. I also learned
that I can’t only be a good steward of the money I get, but also my clothes, my
room, and even my body which is the Lord’s temple.”

Rebecca Washington 10 years old
“ I have learned about three important things: saving, giving , and spending. God wants
me to give to others. I am supposed to give my time, talents, and my treasures to
others. God wants me to know that before I spend money that I should pray first and
He will show me if it is something that I really need.”
Earl Jones, III 10 years old
I have learned that nothing belongs to us because it all belongs to God and He is
always watching us. I would recommend this class for more kids and parents
because it is fun. The lessons about money and the story about the people in the
Bible were very interesting.”
Jaylen P. Nesbitt 10 years old
“I have found out that God wants us to use His money to bless others. God’s way of
using money is very important and I recommend this class for those who want their
children to be financially blessed when they grow-up. I hope that you continue with
the Crown Class so that other students can learn God’s way for His money.”
