on May 17th was a moving evening of
honors, updates and heartfelt moments.
Among a full house of avid listeners,
Lauren B. Rock, president and CEO, spoke
of Montefiore’s 130 years of “Tradition.
Compassion. Innovation.” Steven S.
Willensky, board chair, conveyed his
reflections of “Acts of Random Kindness.”
Charismatic TV personality and featured
speaker, Fred Griffith, delivered remarks
on “The New Old.” A short video of
Marvin and Irene Weiner, both Montefiore
residents, revealed their touching, poignant
story entitled “A Love Across Decades.”

By... .”As often as not, the sponsor would
be Kent or Lucky Strike cigarettes, Toni
Home Permanent, Pepsodent Toothpaste
or Good n’ Plenty candy.
Fast forward to 2012. As you peruse
this newsletter or make your next visit
here, you will see or hear of many
varied activities: educational, cultural,
spiritual and recreational, all for the
benefit of residents, their families and
the entire Montefiore community. These
activities are “Brought to You By...You!“
In addition to sheltering, healing,
rehabilitating, caring and comforting
our residents, Montefiore is committed
to providing a nourishing and enriching
quality of life for your loved ones who
have been entrusted to our care.
The dramatically shrinking Medicare
and Medicaid reimbursements simply
do not, nor will they ever support these
activities and programs. The quality
of life that sets Montefiore apart, and
infuses the Home with a haimish spirit, is
“Brought to You By...You.“
It is only because of the generosity
of the many donors to Montefiore and
to The Montefiore Foundation that we
have been able to and will continue
to offer a full range of enriching
activities. Many of you and your families
have created family funds and given
significant gifts to Montefiore.

2012 Volunteer recognition luncheon

At the annual Montefiore and
The Weils Volunteer Recognition
Luncheon, which took place on
May 1, the event’s theme
– “Volunteers Are Our Cup of Tea”–
made good on its promise. Just as
this expression implies, there are
endless reasons volunteers are suited
to our liking and make life a little
sweeter for residents and staff.
The winner of the 2011
Bea Bernstein Volunteer-of-theYear Award, June Rosenfeld, has
been brewing a strong presence at
Montefiore for 30 years! With over
9,000 hours of service to Montefiore,
June has worn many hats in her
time, including presently, as a
courteous and charismatic volunteer
at the MoMart gift shop. In an effort
to entice customers to the MoMart
by wearing the establishment’s
apparel, one could call her a fashion
model, but to the entire Montefiore
community, June is clearly a role
model – kind, perseverant and
thriving, at the young age of 94!
Just as each teabag has its
unique blend of ingredients, such
is the case with the elite group
of volunteers selected for various
honors:
The Weils Volunteer-of-the-Year
Joel Teplitzky – took home the
organization’s first-ever award. A
humble, warm and accommodating
volunteer at The Weils café since
2009, Joel is known for infusing the
residents’ happy hour with a little
extra happiness and humor.
The Staff Appreciation Award
Josie Love – Myers 3 Activity
Coordinator was the proud honoree.
According to sing-along volunteer
Ed Broidy, “Her tenderness, pleasant
disposition, affability and resident
interest are very apparent on her
many trips with residents to the
Maltz Chapel for the sing-along
program. She remains for the entire
event and assists us to make certain
all goes well.”
Montefiore Heroes
Audrey Frank, Melba Cohen and
Carol Resnik – each brought the
volunteer program at Montefiore
to greater heights during their
dedicated service to Montefiore for
their multiple accomplishments.
Much like the tea each
volunteer took home as a parting
gift, the impact they have made at
Montefiore and The Weils lingers on
and with time, seems only to grow
stronger.

combination of the Presto Printing Mailbox and Presto Mail Service. Learn about
this brand new way to stay in touch with your loved ones at Montefiore without
their need of a computer.
What Presto does:
• It allows you to send an e-mail
to loved ones who don’t use a
computer or the Internet;
• It transforms e-mails into beautiful,
easy-to-read e-letters with photos
and attachments.
How it works:
1. Send an e-mail, photos and other
documents to a Presto-provided
e-mail address;
2. The Presto Mail Service transforms
e-mailed messages and photos into
printable, full color “e-letters”;
3. The Presto Printing Mailbox
automatically retrieves messages via
the phone line and prints them out.
This service provides residents a
decorative, hand-delivered message
sent from family and friends using
our custom e-mail address:
montefiore@presto.com. After
registering using the form below,
family and friends receive “how to”
instructions and can begin sending
unlimited messages to their loved
ones via e-mail. The Presto Mailbox
converts the message into a beautiful
letter with a font size large enough
for all to read. Our dedicated

THE SECOND HALF OF LIFE:
ENCOURAGING NEWS
A recent work, “The
Mature Mind” by Dr. Gene
Cohen, (sadly, now deceased),
researcher and former
geriatric expert at George
Washington University, points
out the positive aspects of aging and offers
heartening news about the human brain.
To our surprise, Dr. Cohen insists that
the brain can grow new cells to the end of
life, that in some ways an older brain works
better – yes better than a younger one. For
one thing: it knows more! For another, it
relates more to positive emotional stimuli
than to negative ones. According to a study
at the University of California, older adults
“experience less intense negative emotions”
and are more likely to remember positive
than negative experiences than younger
counterparts.
In other words, older adults are likely to
be calmer, more balanced in the face of life’s
challenges. The circuits in their brains work
a bit differently in addition to the likelihood
that they have faced these challenges many
times before.
But there’s further good news: some
older adults – on retirement – want to try
new things, discover new interests, even
take risks. One woman told Dr. Cohen: ‘I’m
itching to do something different. It needs
to be something out of the ordinary – even
a little risky.’ She advertised herself as a
driver for older women who wanted to go
places, travel and enjoy conversation along
the way. Her new career as a chauffeur took
off in no time.
In short: our minds can grow and there
are resources for hope. We’re not ‘over the
hill.’ Many of us can climb new hills.
BooK of rememBranCe
To better serve the spiritual needs
of our families, Montefiore is proud to
announce that this coming Rosh Hashanah,
Sunday, September 16, a beautiful Book of
Remembrance will be open in our Chapel
to list the names of loved ones who have
passed on. For a moderate cost, families can
request to have the name (or names) of their
loved one(s) and the date of their passing
beautifully inscribed. In addition, by request,
Montefiore will advise each family of the
date of passing of their loved one and invite
them to the appropriate Sabbath service in
our Chapel, where their loved one’s names
shall be read aloud and Kaddish said. In this
way Montefiore can be faithful to its mission
to strengthen the spirit of our residents and

SIx MONTHS LATER…
To me, June signifies wonderful
things: sunshine, warm breezes,
and lovely flowers and trees. It also
means that half the calendar year
has been completed – the time to
review my annual resolutions to see
how I’m doing six months later with
my personal TO DO List! Well, I did
shred my out-of-date documents,
clean out a closet or two, and lose
5 pounds (though I gained them
right back), but those items come
from the bottom of my list and are
not very meaningful in the grand
scheme of things. My top three
never change, and they are:
1) Stay close to everyone I love;
2) Learn something new; and
3) Make a difference.
I don’t know what’s on your list,
but I am pretty sure you have one,
and if #3 on mine resonates with you,
too, then I have some suggestions for
your next six months… Montefiore is
a great place to make a difference!

just a few ways to help out while
extending our bottom line. Please

Through Grief ”
Gorgeous Gardens
Montefiore’s entrance gardens are near
completion. Look for a new walkway connecting
the two gardens surrounding The Stella Kleinman
Rehab Gym and a cement bench in The Daus
Garden outside The Maltz Chapel. The gym
gardens were a gift from an anonymous donor.
The Daus Garden is named in memory of Jean
Daus, a Montefiore Board member. The flower
garden surrounding The Barkley/Davis Menorah
is a gift from the Aileen and Arthur Arnson
Garden Fund. Art Arnson,✡ was a Life Director
of Montefiore and Alvin Barkley is an Honorary
Director and former Board Chair.

The staff at Montefiore and The Weils
pride ourselves on not only providing
exemplary clinical care to our residents
and patients, but also providing respect,
dignity and a high quality of life.
Beyond residents’ and patients’ medical/
rehabilitation needs, there are myriad
“wish list” items that would assist us in
meeting our goal of “being recognized as
the center of excellence for promotion of
wellness, innovative treatment and care
of illness, and attainment of the highest
possible quality of life for the aging
community.” We would be delighted to

Montefiore announces New
assisted living Memory Care Pavilion
Montefiore is pleased to
announce an innovative addition
to its continuum of services and is
creating a new memory care pavilion
for individuals with early- to midstage dementia who need assisted
living and dementia care support.
Resident living spaces will include
six studio rooms and two suites. The
1000 square foot exterior expansion,
adjacent to the kitchen and activity/
dining room, includes a living room
and library with computer stations.
A highlight of the expanded space is
a multi-sensory environment (MSE)
room which offers stimulation of
senses – touch, sound, smell, taste
and sight – proven to help those
with dementia reconnect with their
environment. By caring for those
with dementia in an assisted living
setting, this soothing yet stimulating
space will keep individuals active
and engaged in a compassionate,
supportive and safe environment.
Each resident will have the freedom
to choose his or her degree of
socialization and daily schedule.
The assisted living memory care
pavilion on Montefiore’s Beachwood
campus is scheduled to open this fall.

CFo, expands role
to administrator at
Montefiore
Montefiore is
pleased to announce
that Mark Weiss, LNHA
(Licensed Nursing Home
Administrator), MBA, CPA,
has expanded his role and
will now oversee day-to-day
operations at Montefiore
as an Administrator in addition to his Chief
Financial Officer responsibilities. Weiss
directs the fiscal operations for Montefiore,
the Montefiore Housing Corporation
and the Montefiore Foundation, thereby
overseeing a combined $35 million budget.
Weiss is an expert regarding Medicare
and Medicaid and has lobbied in both
Columbus and Washington, D.C. regarding
healthcare issues as they relate to
reimbursement. He continues to advocate
on behalf of senior healthcare.

named to the 2012 Honor Roll in
U.S. News & World Report’s annual
Best Nursing Homes.
The U.S. News Honor Roll highlighted
39 nursing homes with perfect performance
ratings over the past year. Out of more
than 15,500 facilities that U.S. News
reviewed, The Rehabilitation Pavilion
at The Weils is the only Ohio facility to
receive four straight quarters of perfect
five-star ratings from the federal Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services – the
government agency that sets and enforces
standards for nursing homes (defined as
facilities or portions of facilities enrolled
in Medicare or Medicaid that provide
24-hour nursing care and other medical
services) in all three areas - health
inspections, nurse staffing and quality of care.
