ifespan of Greater Rochester,
a not for profit organization,
currently administers the InHome Financial Management
Assistance Program to Genesee
County residents through the Muriel H. Marshall Fund
for the Aging and through the technical assistance of
the Office for the Aging. The program is now actively
assisting clients who are age 60 or older and who
reside in Genesee County. Our trained staff members
and volunteers visit at home to help you: pay bills, plan
a budget, balance a checkbook, work with creditors and
fill out simple insurance forms and assist in identifying
scams to help reduce the risk of financial exploitation.
This service is perfect for older individuals who do not
have experience with finances; older adults who have
health problems that prevent them from being able to
handle their finances. Lifespan cannot consolidate or
pay down any individual debts. We can only advise
you regarding debt, including your consolidation
options. There is no cost for this service.
Contact: Karen Hall, Coordinator for the Lifespan
Financial Management Assistance Program at (585)

Avoid the Fear of Falling
Submitted by Kristine Voos, CHES
very year, 1 in 3 adults over age 65 suffer from
a fall. Unfortunately, those who have already
experienced a fall are at greater risk for it
happening again. These falls are responsible
for thousands of deaths each year and about two million
are treated for nonfatal injuries in emergency rooms.
Although the body may recover, will you be ok mentally
and emotionally?
E
The psychological consequences of falling should not
be underestimated. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, “Many people who fall
even if they are not injured, develop a fear of falling.
This fear may cause them to limit their activities, which
leads to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness,
and in turn increases their actual risk of falling.”
This vicious cycle can be avoided by working to prevent
falling in the first place. Below are helpful tips for you to
use.
Fall Prevention Tips:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Improve balance and strength with exercise
programs like Otago and Tai-Chi.
Reduce tripping hazards – keep cords, shoes,
papers, plants, and boxes out of walkways.
Add grab bars in and beside the tub/shower and
next to the toilet.
Use a nonslip mat or appliques in the tub/
shower.
Install railings on both sides of the stairs.
Improve lighting and use nightlights.
Avoid throw rugs and use nonskid mats or tape.
Wear supportive and non-slip footwear.
Have eyes checked by an eye doctor at least
one a year.
Ask doctor or pharmacist to review medications
to identify those that may cause dizziness or
drowsiness.

A
n important part of being ready for an
emergency is to “be informed.” Listening to
local radio and TV is one option; another is to
sign up for NY-ALERT, the New York State all
-hazards alert and notification system.
With NY-ALERT, if there is a storm or other emergency
that could affect you and/or your family you will get the
facts quickly. And, it’s free. For more information or to
sign up, call 1-888-697-6972 or visit www.nyalert.gov.
NYSEG and RG&E Urge Customers to Beware
of Bill-Payment Scams
Submitted by: Karen Hall, Lifespan Coordinator
N
YSEG and RG&E continue to
learn of fraudulent activities
where customers are contacted
– by email, phone or in person
– and asked to pay current or past due
charges. Any “payments” then end up
with scammers. Utility customers can be a convenient
target for these scammers because, unlike retail
business customers, most everyone is a customer of
an energy company and pays utility bills.
NYSEG and RG&E urge customers to take the
following precautions to avoid falling victim to a
scam:
Always type the NYSEG or RG&E Web address when
making an online payment; do not rely on email links.
At nyseg.com and rge.com, customers can check
account balances and any past-due amount
•
Even if you are not at risk, please share this information
with your loved ones who are. Being aware and
prepared can extend lives and preserve independence.
•
For more information, including local locations for Otago
and Tai-Chi exercise programs and free in-home safety
assessments, or to participate in the Falls Prevention
•
Program in Genesee County, call 585-343-1611.
•
•
When making a payment by phone, always confirm
the NYSEG or RG&E phone numbers. Customers
should not make payments by phone to anyone
who has contacted them or asked them to dial a
number other than a NYSEG or RG&E number
Don’t trust links in emails when paying NYSEG or
RG&E by credit card – go directly to
nyseg.com
or rge.com to complete credit card transactions
If paying by mail, the addresses are: NYSEG, P.O.
Box 11745, Newark, NJ 07101- 4745; RG&E
P.O. Box 11747, Newark, NJ 07101-4747
NYSEG and RG&E bills may be paid at an
authorized pay agent, at a Walmart location or at a
company walk-in office

Nutrition Notes
Eggs Are Not Just For Easter
Submitted by: Ellen Foster, Registered Dietitian
E
ggs are incredible when it
comes to nutrition. Did you
know the protein in eggs is the
highest-quality protein found in
any food? Well, it is! And there are 13
essential nutrients in just one egg.
Eggs are all-natural, and have lots of vitamins and
minerals—all for 70 calories. The nutrients in eggs can
play a role in
•weight management because the high-quality protein
in eggs helps you to feel fuller longer and stay
energized, which contributes to maintaining a healthy
weight.
•muscle strength and the prevention of muscle loss
because high-quality protein may help active adults
build muscle strength and help prevent muscle loss in
middle-aged and aging adults.
•brain function because eggs contain choline, a
substance which relays messages from the brain
through nerves to the muscles; and eye health through
two antioxidants (Lutein and zeaxanthin) found in egg
yolks which help prevent macular degeneration, a
leading cause of age-related blindness
Did you know:
•Most eggs are laid between 7:00 AM and 11:00 AM?
•The United States produces 10% of the world’s eggs?
•People first started using eggs as a food source in
1400BC?
•There are six grams of protein in one egg?
•A chef’s hat is said to have one pleat for each way an
egg can be cooked?
•Europe has been using domesticated hens for eggs
since 600BC?
•Egg yolks are one of the few foods that are a good
source of Vitamin D?
•A whole egg is second only to human mother’s milk
for nutrition?
•Eggs have no vitamin C because the chick can
produce it on its own?
•The yolk is the major source of the egg’s vitamins and
minerals?
At less than 20 cents apiece, eggs are an affordable
and delicious breakfast option, or for that matter, any
time of the day. And not just on Easter!!

GENESEE CAREGIVER
Are You Getting Your Yearly FREE Annual
Wellness Visit?
By; Kimberly Perl, HIICAP Coordinator
T
he Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) is a FREE
preventive benefit available under Medicare as
of January 1, 2011. During the Annual Wellness
Visit, you (as a patient) would provide your
physician with a list of your medical and family history,
including but not limited to: illnesses and hospital stays,
medical events that have occurred within your family (ex.
Cancer, mental health issues), any surgeries you may
have had, and prescriptions (as well as over the counter
vitamins, etc.) you currently are taking. Your physician
(nurse practitioner or physician assistant) will: assess
your body measurements and vitals, look for cognitive
impairment, assess your functional capacity (if you can
perform daily activities without trouble), assess your
appearance, and assess your falls risk.
Together, the two of you will discuss health advice and
education, including: nutrition and weight loss, smoking
cessation, disease self-management; any referrals that
need to be made, and the assessment of identified risk
factors that may need a treatment plan. From all of this,
a 5-10 year plan will be established for screening and
prevention.

ur Transportation
Coordination Program helps
seniors and their caregivers
understand transportation
options available in our county.
Transportation is available for medical
appointments in and out of county, but
also to the pharmacy, grocery store or for other
personal shopping. Maybe you need to do some
banking, run errands or you want to visit a loved one
in the nursing home or hospital. Give us a call and
we’ll gladly help connect you to available services.
Please call us at 343-1611 for more information.
The Transportation Coordination Program is made
possible through the generous support of the Muriel
H. Marshall Fund for the Aging in Genesee County
through the Community Foundation and the
Genesee County Legislature.
During your exam, you may also have the following
screening and preventive services: flu shot, cervical
cancer screening, prostate cancer screening, evaluation
and management of an acute or chronic condition, lab
tests and referrals for additional screening or prevention
services.
There is NO cost for this Annual Wellness Visit, as long
as your physician accepts Medicare assignment. If
additional services (other than those previously listed)
are delivered to you as a patient, then you MAY be
charged the cost of the visit.
Note – when making your appointment, you MUST tell
them you wish to have your Free Annual Wellness Visit.
If this is not stipulated, and you say “physical” instead, it
will NOT be covered in full.

A
new Tai Chi class is now available
at the Alexander United Methodist
Church located at 10540 Main
Street in the Village of Alexander.
Classes continue to be available in the City
of Batavia at Havenwood Congregate
Apartments, 240 Richmond Ave., and at the Batavia
Senior Center, 2 Bank Street, as well as in Oakfield at
the United Methodist Church located at 2 S. Main Street.
Classes are being offered through a cooperative effort
between the Office for the Aging and the Batavia branch
of the GLOW YMCA as part of the Step Up to Stop Falls
initiative in Genesee County. Tai Chi has been shown to
improve balance and may therefore reduce the risk of
falling. This particular form of exercise involves slow,
deliberate movements and can be performed in either a
standing or seated position.
So, if you would like to learn to “wave like clouds” and
“part the wild horse’s mane” (just two of the Tai Chi
movements taught), stop in at one of the locations and
give Tai Chi a try. It is a great opportunity to try a
different form of exercise, meet new people, and gain
personal benefits.
For current information about class days and times call
the Office for the Aging at 343- 1611. Other questions
concerning Tai Chi can be directed to the YMCA at 3441664.
This program is made possible by grant funds from the
Community Health Foundation for Western and Central
New York, the New York State Office for the Aging, the
federal Older Americans Act, and the generous support
of the Genesee County Legislature. For individuals with
disabilities, requests for reasonable accommodations
should be made with at least five business days notice.

If your family member has advanced dementia or is
otherwise unable to communicate, then you will
need to take a more active role.
You may want to speak with the doctor alone, either
before or after the visit. Many doctors will be available
for scheduled telephone calls. To make this call most
effective, have your list of concerns ready. Where
possible, limit the list to the items that you do not wish
to discuss in front of your family member.
Caregivers: Preparing for Your Family Member’s •
Doctor Visits
Submitted by: Ruth Spink, Services Administrator
ou as a family caregiver make a
difference. Just by being present
at your family member’s visit
with the doctor, you can affect
what is being said, to whom, and how well
this information is understood. You can
also listen, ask questions, and be a support when your
family member feels anxious or confused.
A Good Start: Try to schedule doctor visits for times
when you and your family member have the most energy
and are not distracted. Doctor visits are stressful enough
without your being worried about picking up a child from
daycare or finishing a project at work. The time of day
may be important; your family member may be better
able to participate in the doctor visit in the morning
before the activities of the day, or in the afternoon
because of sleeping late.
Before the appointment, talk with your family member
about what you both want to accomplish during this
doctor’s visit. For instance:
• What are your family member’s main concerns? Is it
about physical symptoms, like pain or shortness of
breath? Or feelings, such as being sad and worried?
• What are your main concerns? Are they the same as
your family member’s? If you and your family
member share the same concerns, then you know
what to focus on during the visit. But if you and your
family member have very different concerns, try to
agree on one or two that each of you will discuss with
the doctor.
• Figure out how to talk with the doctor about sensitive
issues. These might include a symptom that feels
embarrassing (like incontinence) or worrisome (like
memory loss or concerns about driving). Each of you
may need time to talk alone with the doctor.
Talk about ways you can help during doctor visits. Here
are some options:
• Your family member may want you to stay in the
waiting room while he or she is being examined by
the doctor.
• You family member might want you to come into the
doctor’s exam room.
• When it’s time to talk, your family member might
prefer that you remain quiet. This way, you help just
by taking notes or making sure you have correct
information, such as about a new medicine.
• You might have the list of concerns and be the
person to make sure those are discussed. This may
be by prompting your family member.
• You might take the lead in asking questions and
giving information. For some family members, this is
a relief and does not feel like you are taking over.

NYSEG and RG&E Urge Customers to Beware of Bill-Payment Scams
Article Continued from Page #6
If payment done via an online payment service (for
example, through a bank), always follow the
payment service’s instructions to ensure account
security
• Never provide Social Security numbers, credit card
numbers or bank information to anyone requesting
it (over the phone or in person) unless the customer
has initiated the contact and feels confident that the
transaction is legitimate.
NYSEG and RG&E will never ask customers to
purchase a debit card to make a payment
• To confirm the identity of any NYSEG or RG&E
employee: ask for a photo ID card (if in person) or
ask for their employee number. Then contact
NYSEG (1.800.572.1111) or RG&E
(1.800.743.2110) to verify the individual’s identity
and the nature of their business.
• NYSEG and RG&E employees are happy to comply
with an identity confirmation request. It is also
important to note NYSEG and RG&E will not call
customers for payment if an account is in good
standing
• Customers who need to make an urgent payment
should do so by calling NYSEG directly at
1.800.600.2275 to ensure that their account is
properly credited. RG&E customers should call
1.800.743.2110
• Customers who have any questions about a call
they have received for an overdue payment are
likewise urged to contact NYSEG at
1.800.572.1111; RG&E at 1.800.743.2110
To avoid scams entirely and remove the worry of a
missed payment, NYSEG and RG&E customers may
want to consider enrolling in their Autopay service,
where each month’s payment will be automatically
deducted from a designated account. More information
about Autopay is available at nyseg.com or rge.com or
by contacting Lifespan’s Financial Services Team at
(585) 259-2781.
