Stewardship Thought: “I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me. “ (Luke 22:34) How many times have you heard someone make a disparaging comment about Jesus or the Catholic faith? How do you react? Do you remain quiet not to cause a disturbance or worst yet, because you don’t want your friends or family to think negatively about you? Pray for the courage to speak up and enter into a respectful dialogue. Sunday Collection COS Online Giving Total Loose Change $9,625.00 $97.00 $9,722.00 $402.00 Ministry Team FROM THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, Christology is a course of theological studies that concerns its endeavors to understanding as best it can, Jesus, the Christ and the Man. Our Christian doctrine defined centuries ago that as far as study and faith will give us opportunity to know, Jesus the Christ, is one person, the second person of the Holy Trinity and is uniquely at one and the same time, Divine and Human, Son of God and Son of Mary. Our tendency oftentimes is to highlight the divinity of Jesus to the exclusion of his all too real humanity. Paul goes to the heart of the matter when explaining to his fledgling church community, that Jesus was equal with God but at the same time was human as he and they were: as human as you and I are. And most likely Paul’s all too human church at the time wondered why an Almighty Person would allow himself to be slaughtered as he was, just like a common criminal. And we can only counter that bafflement with Jesus’ own words: “No greater love hath a man than he lay his life down for his friend.” Without a lot of theological sophistication, Paul, but with uncanny insight, described Jesus as taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness, found human in appearance,… humbled….., obedient to the point of death…. that …. Because of this, God highly exulted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name… LORD … and the GLORY OF GOD THE FATHER. Pastoral Council Our lives are filled with many exhilarating and glorious moments -weddings, babies, graduations, ordinations, jobs, advancements, wellness, health etc. A closer review of these experiences notes that anything worth having is worth working for. Paul was simply telling his converts that all of Jesus’ ministry and actions showed that, deep within the recesses of this truly human person, was divinity which would spare no cost in restoring to the universe, most especially its now fellow human beings, the perfection with which it was originally made, but weakened by sinister forces. The almighty allowed those sinister forces the competence to battle creation’s freedom to choose and love and be loyal. Finance Council Ministry Council JOTI: Just Once, Try It On Palm Sunday the Christian journeys with Jesus in spirit to the destination of great sacrifice before glory. Fr. Donald, a seminary professor, often remarked that the good Christian disciple’s life, if lived with sincerity, would have moments of peace and happiness, but be mingled with a lifetime of slow martyrdoms, Following Jesus will always entail repercussions in the midst of the cultures in which we find ourselves living. There will be many Palm Sundays during the lifetime of Christian commitment, mingled with many Good Fridays. Easter remains the promise, though, for the faithful disciple, and the reason for Discipleship. And the question is: it this all worth living for? May Lenten endeavors strengthen our fidelity to Jesus and his gospel of forgiveness, mercy, compassion - love of neighbor, especially the poor. Sincerely, Fr. Bernie Let us pray for our sick: Blake Dass, Eleanor Pavalko, Marcia Styranec, Sebastian Pieton, Robert Arnoto, Regina Graygo, Julia Skalada, Robert Skalada, Tom Kolat, Wendy Pakalnis, Jeannette Rusu, Diane Javorsky, Shawn Tirabassi, Michael Lombard, Joe Flora, Linda Agnew, Heather Hanlon, James Visingardi, Judy Wilson & John Reves. For our sick and homebound: Phil Tomko, Gloria Russo, Evelyn Householder, Clara Andrews, Mary Russo, Theresa Pitlik, Veronica Kakaruda and Mary Belloto. For those in nursing homes: Dorothy Petro, Patricia Watt, Mildred Labuda, Florence Colburn, Mary Nichiporchick, Gertrude Petko, Janet Zuccaro, Mary Ann Vass & Joseph Popio. HATRED: "As long as we live in hatred for our neighbors we are hating our own selves, because hatred deprives us of divine charity. How blind are we not to see that with the sword of hatred for our neighbors we are killing ourselves." St. Catherine of Siena EASTER OFFERING: Thanks to all of you over these years, our capital improvements are done and paid for. A few pledges are still being completed. You may have noticed that our Sunday offerings have diminished over the months. That has left us struggling to keep up with all our ordinary operating expenses. We hope that our Easter collection and a successful Festival will bring us even when we end the fiscal year in June. Please be as generous as you can with your Easter gift to the parish. Thank you for what you have done and whatever you can do. Fr. Bob FESTIVAL NEWS: Send your tickets into the parish office for a chance to win the next Early Bird drawing on Wednesday, March 23. Please remember to write the seller’s name on your tickets. Pope Francis Against the Death Penalty On February 21, Pope Francis reiterated the Church’s opposition to the death penalty, noting that the current Year of Mercy “is a propitious occasion to promote in the world every more mature forms of respect for life and dignity of every person. Even the criminal keeps the right to life, the gift of God.” Likewise, John Paul 11 challenged followers of Christ to be “unconditionally pro-life.” noting that “the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even ion the case of someone who has done great evil. Modern society has the means of protecting itself, without definitively denying criminals the chance to reform.” “On this Good Friday, a day when we recall our Savior’s own execution,” the US Catholic Bishops “appeal to all people of good will, and especially Catholics, to work to end the death penalty.” For more information go to the Catholic Mobilizing Network at www.catholicsmobilizing.org. MISS BEHAVIOR REQUESTS YOUR PRESENCE Dear Miss Behavior: Here it is Palm Sunday, and soon we will celebrate Easter. Do you have any advice on what I should be doing this week? Sincerely, Justa Parishioner Dear JP: This is the high point of the liturgical year, and I hope that you will participate fully in this week’s liturgies—with your presence, prayer, singing, and joy. Today, Palm Sunday, we observe Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and receive blessed palms; soon the mood changes as we listen to the account of Jesus’ passion and death from the Gospel of Luke. Then, on Holy Thursday morning (Tuesday in our diocese) in cathedrals throughout the world, bishops will bless the holy oils to be used in our parishes during the next twelve months. If you can get to the Chrism Mass, do so. On Holy Thursday we begin the Triduum, the three-day observance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper is the only Mass celebrated in our parishes on Holy Thursday. This is the night when we commemorate the installation of the Eucharist. It is the night for the Washing of Feet. It is the night when, at the end of Mass, the tabernacle is empty, the sanctuary lamp is extinguished, our priest transfers the Holy Eucharist to the altar of repose, and parishioners gather during the evening for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The drama continues on Good Friday as we listen to the account of Jesus’ passion and death, this time from the Gospel of John. We venerate the cross, and we pray for people throughout the world. The Easter Vigil takes place on Holy Saturday after sunset. The priest lights the paschal candle from the new fire, and we process into the dark church with our candles that have been lit from the paschal candle. We hear the Easter Proclamation, and we know that Christ has triumphed over death. Bells ring as we sing the Gloria. Our new converts are baptized (if they have not already been baptized) and confirmed There is so much drama, so much beauty, and so much meaning to these Holy Week liturgies. Let us all be present and let us all participate fully in the riches that have been prepared for us. Sincerely, Miss Behavior A Tweet From POPE FRANCIS: God is truly rich in mercy and extends it abundantly upon those who appeal to Him with a sincere heart. GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION for the HOLY LAND: Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians in the Holy Land. The Good Friday collection gives use and Catholics around the world a chance to do that. Your contribution to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection makes you an instrument of peace in a troubled land. The Church in the Middle Easter conducts parish ministry, provides Catholic education, feeds the hungry, builds housing for Christians, maintains shrines and operates refugee centers. The political, religious and military challenges there are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. Like Simon of Cyrene, help carry Christ's cross there by supporting Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection. Thank you.
