A Trivial Comedy for Serious People

Nowadays, The Importance of Being Earnest is best remembered as the
play that gave the world some of Wilde's best known "clever" quotations
and is often considered a straightforward comedy of manners. This was not
the case when the play first debuted, however, and the play gained much
notoriety (and was paradoxically nearly forgotten) due to the scathing and
multi-layered satire that today is often overlooked.
Wilde modeled the character of Algernon after himself and Jack after
his lover Lord Alfred Douglas, a fact which was obvious to theatergoers
of the time. Douglas' mother, Sibyl Montgomery, resided at a house in
Berkshire near the town of Bracknell, and was quite obviously the model
for this play's character of the same name. Those who knew Wilde and
Douglas recognized the character as an overbearing mother-in-law.
Many lines of dialogue (as well as plot points and even the names
of some of the characters) that today seem quite innocent were actually
double entendres when one knew the popular gay code and slang of the
era. This meant that certain members of the audience would find jokes in
what would appear to be straight lines to everyone else. Even the play's
title was a gay pun, since asking someone if a certain man was "Earnest"
was code for asking if he was gay. (This also makes Algernon's reference
to his friend being "Earnest in town and Jack in the country" even more of
a statement about leading a double life than the words alone convey.)
The premiere of the play was nearly disrupted by Douglas' father, the
Marquess of Queensbury, who planned to throw rotten vegetables at Wilde
during the curtain call. Thwarted in his attempt to publicly embarrass the
playwright, the Marquess instead openly challenged Wilde for being "a
somdomite" four days later which led to the now-famous trials and Wilde's
imprisonment for "gross indecency." The show's original production was
closed quickly as the scandal grew, and Wilde was unable to find anyone
to publish the text of the play until two years before his death. It wasn't until
1911, sixteen years after the play's debut, that it was successfully revived
and was finally acknowledged as Wilde's greatest work.
Our production strives to be accessible to all audiences while casting
a sly wink at the undertones that would have been apparent to Victorian
audiences. It is a scathing satire of not only Victorian society but of the
ability of some people to be self-contradictory and worship what Lady
Bracknell refers to as the "delicate fruit" of ignorance.

Meet the Cast
WILL BAEZ (Lady Bracknell) is 24 years old and attended
Rowan University majoring in Vocal Performance and Theatre.
He has graced the stage in numerous roles such as: Curly in
Oklahoma, Cliff in Cabaret, Charlemagne in Pippin, Carmen Ghia
in The Producers, Leaf Coneybear in The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee, and Monastatos in The Magic Flute. This is
one his most prized roles on the Little Theater's stage and he
is very excited to be working with such a wonderful cast and
crew again. It's been a terrific journey and he would like to thank
everyone for all the great memories along the way.
BILL BRANIN (Jack) has been a member of CP since 2005.
Since his first show as an ensemble player in The Who’s Tommy
he has played Peter Hunter in No Sex Please, We’re British, Gary
LeJeune in Noises Off, Ralph in A Christmas Story, Paul in Barefoot
in the Park, Richard in The Lion in Winter, Elliot in Alone Together,
and Biff in Death of a Salesman. He would like to thank his family
and friends for their support.
ROBERT COOK (Lane/Merriman) returned to the stage this year
after a long absence. He was most recently seen as Montresor in
CP's production of An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe.
HANK CHANDLESS (Rev. Chasuble) has always considered
Cumberland Players to be his "home." Some of his favorite
performances include The Foreigner, Close Ties, and California
Suite, and as the director of Brighton Beach Memoirs, Barefoot in
the Park, and Death of a Salesman. Credits outside of CP include
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; Arsenic and Old
Lace; Love, Sex, and the IRS; and 6 RMS Riv Vu among others.
HEIDI DUGAN (Miss Prism) of Millville is delighted to return to
the stage at last. A Bridgeton school teacher by day, she enjoys
all aspects of community theatre in her free time. An experienced
stage manager and director, Heidi has also appeared on stage in
both musicals and straight shows. Her favorite role to daye is Truvy
in CP's Steel Magnolias. Thanks to Pab for this opportunity. And
thanks to my family for all your patience and support for this and
everything. I love you.
D. MICHAEL FARLEY (Algernon) has served as VP of Production
on the CP executive board for the last two seasons. He most
recently played Orin in Little Shop. Some of his favorite roles on
the CP stage are Barfeè in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling
Bee, Warbucks in Annie, Cousin Kevin in The Who's Tommy, Martini
in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Tim in Noises Off. D.M.

CAITLYN ROMANISHIN (Cecily) has been running around CP for
ten years, having "helped out" during The Murder Room at the ripe
old age of 8. She was last seen on our stage as the title character
in last year's The Snow Queen.
BETH WYNKOOP (Gwendolen) was most recently seen as
Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors. This will be her fifth show with
Cumberland Players; she was previously been seen as Olive in The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Sister Mary Amnesia in
Nunsense, and Rapunzel in Into the Woods.
Meet the Director
PAB SUNGENIS has been CP's Vice President of Finance for
the past four years. He was last seen on stage as Howard in
Death of a Salesman, and directed our productions of Taming
of the Shrew, The Murder Room, and The Lion in Winter. His play
Bearding the Lyons was produced by CP in January, 2011. He is
the creator of the daily comic strip The New Adventures of Queen
Victoria, and the author of the novels Go To Hell and A Funny
Thing Happened on the Way to Columbine. His new novel Sidekick:
The Misadventures of the New Scarlet Knight will be published by
Month 9 Books in March, 2013. We wants to thank his cast and
crew, without whom none of this would have been necessary.
