Seabrook House president
details MatriArk achievements
A treatment facility for women suffering
from drug and alcohol abuse which
started with 14 mothers and their children
has blossomed into a care and rehabilitation
center currently working with 48 mothers
and 80 children.
The facility is the pioneering MatriArk
Family Center affiliated with Seabrook
House, and its president, Edward M.
Diehl, served as host and speaker recently
for Chamber members at a monthly
luncheon. Opening this past May, it is
serving as a model for other facilities
planned elsewhere in the state.
Its programs provide comprehensive
substance abuse treatment to change the
entire life pattern of addicted mothers and
their children, ages up to 12 years. Even
children lost to the foster care system are
often reunited with their mothers.
The mission, Diehl told members, is to
provide treatment, mentoring and training
to return mothers to a home and a job.
Length of stay is up to 12 months, with all
medical and mental health needs provided.

Networking Feb. 1 & 2
in Washington, D.C.
Plans are underway to coordinate meetings
with federal legislators in conjunction with the annual “Walk to Washington,”
sponsored by the N.J. State Chamber of
Commerce. All three county Chamber
offices will be forwarding reservations for
those attending the February 1 and 2 event
in the nation’s capital.
Cumberland County Chambers, cities and
agencies will be co-sponsoring a hospitality
suite. Call your Chamber for details.
Legislative updates
planned for 2007
Chamber chairperson Carolyn Heckman
listens as Seabrook House president Edward
M. Diehl describes the development and range
of services at MatriArk Family Center.
He referred to single-parent women with
abuse problems as “the most under-served
segment of our population” and recalled
how Seabrook House, already treating
more women than most like facilities,
conducted a study which led to the
founding of the MatriArk Family Center.
MartiArk at Seabrook
House hosted Chamber
members to luncheon in
December, seating diners
at cozy four-person tables.
Among those enjoying the
fare were (from l.) Sandee
Rodriguez, Claire Sapienza
Eck, Karen Hepner and
Paula Austin.

Sun Bank warns against business Internet fraud
Sun National Bank is going to war
against Internet fraud.
The bank has alerted area businesses of
the acceleration of Internet fraud during
the past two years, noting that these
represented 46% of all fraud complaints in 2005.
“Fraud complaints concerning wire
transfer of payments more than tripled
between 2003 and 2005 and the most
frequently reported type of identity theft
bank fraud was electronic funds
transfers,” it was noted.
“Fraudsters target businesses,
propositioning owners with lucrative
partnerships,” the bank reported. “In the
world of e-commerce, it’s tempting to
grow your business when someone is
offering funds to do it. Be wary of only
communicating via e-mail or of partnerships that involve using your business
account to filter banking transactions.”
Sun reports that a popular scam is called
phishing, in which fraudsters ask you to
update information or give out account
data. They set up shop by mocking
legitimate businesses, whether over the
phone, via e-mail or with a Web site. Once you’ve supplied the information,
they have all they need to access your
accounts or steal your identity.
Scammers front as a global foreign charity,
soliciting donations. They ask you to
deposit money directly into an account,
rather than by mailing a check, it was noted.
Bank officials urge businesses with fraud questions to call the institution’s
loss prevention and security department
at 690-4300.

Motivational
speaker touts
persistence
Have a goal? Even if you do, if you haven’t
written it down, haven’t been “living it”
daily and haven’t shared it with your
employees or fellow workers, it’s not likely
to be achieved.
That was the message of Manny Nowak,
professional motivation speaker, to our
members at a recent Chamber luncheon.
“When you write down your 10 short-term
goals, and use them as your guide, between
seven and eight of these goals will be
achieved,” he said. “Most of you know you
have to differentiate yourself or your
business to stand out from your competitors.
“But it’s attitude and motivation which
make the big difference in success.”
You must write down your vision and, most
importantly, share it with your employees.
Unless they “buy into” your vision, and
they live it along with you, you are not
likely to succeed, he said.
“Because we do not follow these rules, and
persist in doing so, 95 percent of us will die
with our dreams still in our heads.”
