Manuela Vazquez, MCSTNJ sistermanuela@stanthonyfresno.org ext. 173 In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist invites us to travel the super highway of the Lord. On the highway of the Lord, every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough roads shall be made smooth. In other words, the Lord’s way to us, and our way to the Lord, is a straight shot. There are no roadblocks, curves, or detours. Talk about a great GPS route! But then, why do we get lost so often? Because we think we know a way that is faster and shorter, so we take it, and it turns out to be longer and slower. We have the spiritual GPS directions, but we ignore them and choose our way. When travelling through life, to get to the land of salvation, John the Baptist instructs us to follow this simple direction - stay focused on your final destination. Don’t get distracted by the multiple exits along the way. Don’t take any shortcuts. Follow the GPS directions, which have been prepared for you by Jesus Christ, who is “the way, the truth, and the life.” SECOND COLLECTION This weekend is our SECOND COLLECTION to benefit our Parish Improvement Fund. His heart is set on pleasing and cheering the one to whom the gift is given. - St. Julian 6 DE DICIEMBRE DEL 2015 - SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO PAGE 5 YOUNG ADULTS & POPE FRANCIS @Pontifex November 29 Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has generously granted to us all a special opportunity to obtain indulgences during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy that will begin on December 8, 2015 and culminate on the liturgical Solemnity of Christ the King on November 20, 2016. The following includes excerpts from the Holy Father’s Bull of indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in addition to information pertinent to how this beautiful occasion of grace may be lived out within our Diocesan Church. Initially, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Rome—the Basilica of Saint John Lateran. In the following weeks, the Holy Doors of the other Papal Basilicas will be opened, along with Cathedrals, Shrines and other Particular Churches as designated by local Ordinaries (Bishops) throughout the world. Together we will become a visible sign of the Church’s universal communion. The designated churches in the Diocese of Fresno that will have a Holy Door and serve as pilgrimage site are: St. John’s Cathedral, Fresno Our Lady of Mercy, Merced St. Joachim, Madera St. Anthony of Padua, Reedley Immaculate Heart of Mary, Handford St. Aloysius, Tulare Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Bakersfield St. Therese, Shafter St. Ann, Ridgecrest The Jubilee Year of Mercy reminds us that God is waiting for us with open arms, just like the father of the prodigal son. What is a Holy Door? #holydoor What is the Year of Mercy? The Year of Mercy is an invitation—an invitation to love, kindness, and unbounded generosity. Pope Francis is offering us the opportunity to encounter the incredible mercy of God. Encountering mercy means encountering God. It can transform your life, your relationships, your work, and your ability to embrace and experience all of life. Seeing the great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis called for the Year of Mercy—a special period, also known as a Holy Year or Jubilee Year, for the Catholic Church. It is a time for the Church across the world to take approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. What is a Jubilee Year? A Jubliee Year is when the Catholic Church across the world takes approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. Catholics are encouraged to join together in prayer, go to confession, and share the genius of Catholicism with others. The last Jubilee Year was in 2000, called for by Pope Saint John Paul II. What is the Indulgence for the Year of Mercy? Like any Jubliee Year, a person can receive a plenary indulgence for the Year of Mercy. A plenary indulgence removes all of what is called “temporal punishment” due to sins that have already been forgiven. Sin and evil are real. Every sin, large or small, is in some way a rejection of the-best-version-of-ourselves and a rejection of God. “Temporal punishment” is the natural consequence of that sin, the necessary purification following forgiveness of sin. (See Catechism of the Catholic Church on Indulgences and Sin and Mercy) HOW WILL YOU ENCOUNTER MERCY? #YearofMercy Fundraiser Pilgrimage to World Youth Day Krakow, Poland 2016 If you would like to sponsor our pilgrimage by making a financial contribution please contact Edgar Briseño @ 439-0124 *173 or ebriseno@ stanthonyfresno.org THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING A DONATION! PAGINA 10 DECEMBER 6, 2015 - SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT PARISH / OTHER NEWS AROUND THE DIOCESE Our Friday, December 11, 2015 meeting will be our annual Christmas Party! This year the St. Helen's School choir, under the direction of Mr. Bill Thornbury, will perform Christmas Carols for us and we'll hear a special message from Bishop Armando Xavier Ochoa, D.D. The educational program at St. Helen’s Catholic School is grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Students at St. Helen’s Catholic School are called to love God, to treat others respectfully, to work to the best of their abilities, and to have reverence for all of God’s creation. The faculty and staff members of St. Helen’s Catholic School strive to teach as Jesus did and assist parents and guardians in their role as the primary educators of their children. A lover of music and scenic arts since his childhood, Bill Thornbury graduated from the California State University at Fresno with a teaching degree in music. In 1978, at 26 years old, he portrayed the character of Jody Pearson, elder brother of Mike, the young protagonist of Phantasm (1979). He reprised this role in 1994 and 1998. Bill is a professional singer/songwriter and has been a staff songwriter for 20th CenturyFox in Los Angeles and MTM Records in Nashville. In addition to recording albums, Mr. Thornbury also performs with the critically acclaimed band The Sons of the San Joaquin, but his passion is teaching music to the next generation of music lovers at St. Helen’s. Fresno Street Fresno, CA. 93703 sweakland@sjmhs.org 559-475-5841 SAINT JUAN DIEGO (1474-1548) December 9 How well Mary's own words describe Juan Diego: "God has cast down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly" (Luke 1:52). Through him, for the diverse peoples of the Americas, indigenous and immigrant, the Mother of God became known as their Mother too. Cuauhtlatzin, his given name, means "One Who Speaks Like An Eagle," and Juan Diego faithfully delivered the Virgin's request that a church be built at Tepeyac where she had appeared to him. To the skeptical bishop's request for a sign, Our Lady showed Juan Diego roses blooming through stony ground, despite winter's cold. When he unfolded his tilma to present them to the bishop, imprinted there was Mary's image! Her blue sash and the flower over her womb were traditional Aztec symbols of pregnancy and new life. But her features were those of a mestiza, indicating mixed Aztec-European heritage. Thus to peoples too easily prone to a "clash of cultures," Our Lady of Guadalupe remains the enduring icon of unity-in-diversity, the fruit of our one baptism into Jesus, her Son. --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Please Pray for: all those who are sick May they feel the healing power of our prayers. Condolences: We pray for Jennie Gomes all the faithful departed.
