BACK INTO LIFE
My father’s father died when my father was 11 years old. His mother was a widow at 34, and he -- an only child – bore much of his grief
alone. In accordance with traditional practice, he began to walk very early to synagogue each morning to say prayers in his father’s
memory, a practice lasting for a year after a parent’s death.
At the end of his first week, he noticed that the ritual director of the synagogue, Mr. Einstein,
walked past his home just as he left to walk to synagogue. Mr. Einstein, already advanced in
years explained “Your home is on the way to the synagogue. I thought it might be fun to
have some company. that way, I don’t have to walk alone.”
For a year my father and Mr. Einstein walked through the New England seasons, the humidity of summer and the snow of winter. they talked about life and loss and for a while
my father was not so alone.
After my parents married and my oldest brother was born my father called Mr. Einstein,
now well into his 90’s and asked if he could meet his new wife and child. Mr. Einstein
agreed, but said that in view of his age my father would have to come to him. My father
writes:
“the journey was long and complicated. His home, by car, was fully twenty minutes
away. I drove in tears as I realized what he had done. He had walked for an hour to my
home so that I would not have to be alone each morning…By the simplest of gestures,
the act of caring, he took a frightened child and he led him with confidence and with
faith back into life.”

Tisha B’av
Saturday, July 28th 8:00 p.m. Kohn Chapel
our clergy will be joining us for the chanting of Aicha and
for explanations of the reading during the evening.
Towards the Future. . . Together
there will also be regular Sunday morning service for Tisha B’av
at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday as well as an early mincha service at
1:00 p.m. both in Kohn Chapel.
Dear fellow congregants,
over the past 106 years, our synagogue’s leadership has accomplished much.
today, we are blessed with a visionary Rabbi and a large physical facility in
the midst of a beautiful westside neighborhood. we offer a selection of
warm, participatory religious services, three well-regarded schools and an
amazing variety of speakers and programs.
Along the way we have also become a large and complex organization. this is
why our leadership has determined that the time is right to develop a Long
Range Plan for Sinai temple. this process will engage our Clergy, Lay Leadership,
Administration and Membership and allow us to step back, identify goals and
determine priorities within the framework of Rabbi wolpe’s articulated vision.
the resulting blueprint will allow us to effectively support this vision and move
towards the future in a way that is both heartfelt and sustainable.
over the next several months our Membership will have the opportunity to
participate in this important process. we welcome your participation. together
we will work to ensure our community continues to
thrive now and for generations to come.

A BUSY YEAR AT SINAI
In many ways this year was
like no other recent year at
Sinai temple. New clergy
and staff, new programs,
new capabilities and new
opportunities exist in virtually every aspect of our operations.
the year began with a
new rabbi (Rabbi Jason
Fruithandler), a new
Youth Director (Matt
Baram) and a new AtID
Director
(Jocelyn
orloff).
Later we
added a new Head of
School for Sinai Akiba
d
(Dr.
Sarah
Shulkind) and a
n
o
m
E ri c J . D ia
new Senior Cantor (Cantor Marcus Feldman). Both Dr. Shulkind and Cantor Feldman will join us on July 1. Cantor Joseph gole will shortly transition into his new role as our Cantor
Emeritus while at the same time we will sadly say goodbye to Cantor
Arianne Brown.
we proudly created our Special Needs Religious School and B’nai Mitzvah
training program. Children with special needs within our community
no longer need to seek religious education elsewhere. In our Religious
School we initiated the transformational PoD program in the 5th grade.
Dear Sinai temple,
Seeing its success, in the coming year we will add the resources necessary to expand the program into the 6th grade. we placed renewed emphasis on our Early Childhood Center. Phase 1 of our ECC
renovation is underway. It will result in the creation of an additional
classroom, allowing smaller class size and a higher teacher-student
ratio. Phase 2 will follow next year and include a total refurbishment of
all existing classrooms.
Events such as dreidel-mania, our attempt to set the world record for
dreidel spinning, created an enhanced sense of community. our AtIDSiNet Mentoring Program created a place for young and old to come
together.
Notwithstanding the challenging economic environment, we’ve met
the community’s needs through a combination of enhanced fundraising and cost cutting. the Kol Nidre Appeal grew by more than 20%.
Investments in water and electricity efficiency substantially reduced
operating costs. Even as we cut costs we continue to invest in our facilities. Computer systems were enhanced and we will shortly bring our
fully integrated Blackbaud management system on-line. For the first
time we included summary financial information in our annual report.
we’ve accomplished much but challenges remain. we continue to
focus on creating an enhanced sense of community. our goal is to offer
a welcoming home for worship, education and camaraderie. this focus
will continue throughout the balance of my term of office.

MEET CANTOR MARCUS FELDMAN
It is with great honor and excitement that I accept my new position as Senior Cantor of Sinai temple. I am
truly humbled and in awe of the opportunity to be able to serve such a prestigious institution that in many ways
has been a model to other synagogues across the country.
Since its founding, Sinai temple has always cherished our Jewish musical heritage, and has strived to engage
only the best cantors and music directors. when I look back at Sinai’s history of talented individuals, I see only
leaders in the field and people that truly made a difference in the life of Jewish music. From Leib glantz, a star
cantor during the golden Age of Hazzanut, to Max Helfman, one of the most notable Jewish composers of the
20th century, Sinai temple has always been a leading force in showcasing outstanding Jewish music composed
by extremely gifted Jewish composers, and sung by the highest caliber of cantors.
the cantors that have served Sinai temple have certainly been among the greatest talents of the cantorate.
Cantor Carl Urstein’s books of nusach and Jewish music are used by cantors everywhere, and Cantor Meir Finkelstein’s music, written specifically for Sinai temple, have become some of the most widely recognized and utilized
music throughout the Jewish world.
It is with a sense of kavod that I look towards all of the talented individuals that have added and continue to add to the flourishing growth of this
prominent community, from the gifted rabbis, cantors, and educators, to the hardworking staff and board members.
I feel extremely honored to work with Rabbi David wolpe, a true leader and visionary of the modern rabbinate who has touched the lives of so many
through his outreach and publications. It is a blessing to be working with him in service to this incredible community.
As the successor to Cantor Joseph gole, a leading figure in the American cantorate who has served this community for over twenty years, I will follow
in the example of elevated Jewish music that he has been so integral in bringing into this incredible institution. I look forward to learning and working
with Cantor gole in his new role as Cantor Emeritus.
I look forward to sharing my passion for music and Judaism and in being the next link in an incredible tradition of cantors that have served this
community. I view the cantorate as a sacred vessel for the seamless transmission of Jewish musical heritage throughout the ages. I will strive to
honor and preserve the rich traditions of the past while also always looking forward to the new gateways of the present and future in order to best
serve our community in the 21st century.
B’shalom,
Cantor Marcus Feldman

Shervin Behnam, President
Dear Congregants,
It is truly an honor to be selected as the incoming president of the Men’s Club.
on behalf of myself and our members, I want to extend our sincerest appreciation
and “thank you” to our outgoing president Mr. Elie Alyeshmerni who has made
the Men’s Club a strong and vibrant organization.
I also want to thank the incoming officers who have agreed to help me during my
administration, especially our Executive Vice President Mr. Cary Lerman. I look forward
to working with each of them to serve the needs of our members and the community.
During the coming term, I will continue to build upon the strong foundation which my predecessors have created and leverage the
Men’s Club reputation to organize events that not only instill Jewish values into our lives but help worthwhile charities and groups
worldwide.
we are planning a host of interesting speakers and events for the coming year and we hope to see everyone there. our next event is
the annual Men’s Club picnic, to be held on July 1, 2012, at Roxbury Park. And in August, we will be welcoming Dr. Steven Popper,
who will speak to us about "Israel's offshore gas: A Source of Energy and Investment".
In addition to our outstanding monthly speakers, we will continue the Men’s Club tradition with the following annual events: Roses
for Rosh Hashanah, SoVA (collecting canned goods for the needy in our community during the High Holidays), world wide wrap (a
day where Jewish men all around the world put on tefillin), Burning Bush Dinner, Men’s Club Shabbat, and Yom Hashoah candles.
I cordially invite you to join us every first tuesday of the month at 6:30 P.M., or to visit our website at www.sinaitemple.org/mensclub
to learn more about our wonderful activities.
CONNECTION . GROWTH . LEARNING . SINAI TEMPLE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL 2011-12
this past school year, Sinai temple Religious School was
busy! we kicked off our school year with our annual
Tashlich at the beach. Students and their families gathered at the beach for a spiritual tashlich service, casting
their “sins” off to sea and welcoming in a new year. we
continued our community building through the year and organized Sinai temple’s first ever “Dreidel-mania”; a
synagogue wide attempt to break the guinness world Record for most number of dreidels spinning at one time
for 10-seconds. It was an experience to remember and an amazing program for the Sinai temple books! Some
of the other things we’ve done this year to build our community include a 7th grade tefillin workshop, kindergarten
students planting herbs for tu b’shevat and then using them for their Passover seders, a student council raffle to raise money for charity,
and a 5th grade weekend retreat where over 40 students gathered together to celebrate shabbat and havdallah! 7th graders also
participated in a really special project this year, making their own talitot! one of our biggest programs this year was the launch of our PoD
experiential learning program; where students learn in smaller groups throughout the week and come together on Sundays for electives
and learning through experiences. we plan to continue this program next year and expand it to our 6th grade for the upcoming school
year!
Looking back on all of the things accomplished at Religious School this year, it’s clear that everyone gave their all! our teachers, students,
and families all came together to create another wonderful year filled with lots of learning and growth!

RABBINIC INTERN LEAH LOETERMAN
Sinai temple has been my home since I started in first grade at Sinai Akiba, and I am so excited
to give back to Sinai this summer as a rabbinic intern. I grew up in Los Angeles and have spent
most of my summers at Camp Ramah in California as a camper, counselor, and tzedaka/tikkun
olam coordinator. Since graduating from Brandeis University in 2010 with a B.A. in Judaic
Studies and International Relations, I have been living in New York City, where I am a rabbinical and education student at the Jewish theological Seminary. this fall, I will be studying at
the Masorti movement’s Schechter Institute in Jerusalem. while at JtS, I’ve worked as a
Ramah Service Corps member and religious school teacher at B’nai Jeshurun, conducted
Shabbat and holiday services at a senior living home, and tutored children in Hebrew, Bible
stories, and Jewish holidays. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be at Sinai in this new
capacity, and look forward to continuing to learn and grow with this community!
RABBINIC INTERN NOLAN LEBOvITZ
Nolan Lebovitz was born and raised in Highland Park, Illinois. growing up, he belonged to
North Suburban Synagogue Beth-El in Highland Park and attended Solomon Schechter Day
School. He spent many summers in Israel. He traveled to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California.
Nolan is married to Blair and has two children Shelby (3) and Simon (1). Nolan and Blair have
been members of Sinai temple for several years and send their children to Sinai temple Preschool.

we all make mistakes and we all have wrong done to us.
we are told that our High Holidays are call the 10 days
of repentence. However forgiveness is a tricky business.
Each week Rabbi Fruithandler will post a short video
summarizing a chapter in Rambam’s laws of repentence.
Each chapter deals with a different theme relating to forgiving, forgetting, and apologizing. Each chapter provides a unique insight in preparing for our most holy
days. Listen to a short explanation and add your own
comments and insights as Rabbi Fruithandler asks leading questions.
