WEST SIDE NEWS Page 3/Wednesday, February 6, 2008 The Detail First Baptist Church celebrates 140 years! M embers and friends of the First Baptist Church of White Settlement will be celebrating their 140th anniversary this coming Sunday. A brunch will be served starting at 9 a.m. with the worship service following at 10:30 a.m. Speakers will include Dr. Paul Miller, Dr. Jim Gatliff, and Dr. Al Fasol. The church was organized in February 1868 under the name New Prospect Baptist Church. Six charter members met in a one-room log cabin called Grant’s School House. J.C. Powers was the first pastor of the church. In 1905 the church moved to its present location and then in 1908 changed its name to White Settlement Baptist Church. In the summer of 1943 the church was recognized by the Southern Baptist Convention as having the largest attendance for vacation bible school, and in May of 1946, the church was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Members met in temporary buildings and at the White Settlement ISD Central Elementary School until 1953 when the current building was constructed. In 1954 the church changed its name again to First Baptist Church of White Settlement. Just a few years later, in 1958, Dr. Paul E. Miller began his ministry with the church, which lasted 38 years. The only staff member at the church for a longer term was that of Edwin Marbut, who served as the business manager for 47 years. He retired in the 1990’s. Currently, Dr. David Hixon is pastor to approximately 500 resident members. Along with other activities this Sunday, attendees will have the opportunity to view models of the earlier buildings constructed by Carrell Pipkin and Chester Tucker. The church will recognize Connie Flories and Ora Lee Johnson as its oldest living members at age 93. The longest active member of the church is Frances Blanton who has been attending since 1943. Athlete of the Year Award Veterans Park would like to recognize Amy Kincaid for being selected as the 2007 Regional Female Athlete of the Year and Jon Carlile as the 2007 Regional Male Athlete of the Year for their participation in White Settlement Parks and Recreation softball programs. Amy is a member of “Bubba’s Bunch” Co-ed softball team, which has won numerous league championships at Veterans Park during the 2007 season. Amy definitely stands out as one of the few females to have hit several 300’ plus over the fence home runs in a season. In addition to her hitting power, she has hit for a high batting average, produced great defensive plays, and always demonstrated great sportsmanship on and off of the field. Jon Carlile is a member of the “Sagnasty” men’s softball team, and he also participates with numerous other men’s teams. The “Sagnasty” team is a dominant USSSA league and tournament team on the west side of the Metroplex area. Jon is best described as one of the most complete players on the field, competitive and aggressive on offense and defense, while at the same time demonstrating great sportsmanship on and off of the field. Jon also works well from behind the plate, working as an umpire over several seasons at Veterans Park. The “T.A.A.F. Athlete of the Year Award” program is sponsored by the Texas Amateur Athletic Foundation (T.A.A.F), which is a non-profit state agency supported by over 150 Texas Municipal Parks and Recreation departments across the state.
