Volume 41, Issue 30
Adult Sunday School August 7
The Green Room class will continue
a study of Christianity’s Family Tree:
What Christians Believe and Why, by
Adam Hamilton. We are going to
take a slight detour from the book
to discuss the Mormon faith. There
is an interesting article called
“Mormonism 101” http://
www.mormonnewsroom.org/
article/mormonism-101 which is
informative that should provide
good discussion material. We will
discuss chapter 8, “Methodism”, on
August 14.
The Middle Room class will begin
on page 206, “Healing”, and continue on to the end of Rachel Held
Evans’ book Searching for Sunday.
The Middle Room
class plans to join
Jim & Betty
Stricker’s class on
August 14 for the
study on Paul, the
Apostle “come lately”.
Phone Chain
It has come to our attention that some of you who
are not online are feeling
left out of the loop. In an
effort to keep as many people as
possible informed, we will try a
“phone chain” as a possible solution.
The phone chain will work as follows: the first person on the list will
call the second, the second person
will call the third, and so on down
the list.
The chain will be used primarily to
relay AngelNet messages & any announcements that need to be delivered in a timely manner.
If you would like to be a “link in
the chain”, please call Iris Likens at
651-8401.
Remember our ongoing collections!
Old Shoes for the Shoeman Project which help to fund clean water
projects for developing countries
Aluminum can tabs to support
Church Women United’s effort to
end human trafficking
Barcodes for Campbell’s Labels
for Education program to help fund
improvements at Woodhaven care
facility. ONLY labels with “Labels
for Education” on the barcodes will
be accepted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are seeking contributions to
help offset the cost of 2 new AC
units which service the sanctuary.
Total cost of installation is
$10,600; $6,000 of which was
budgeted. If you would like to help
cover the additional $3300, please
designate “AC” on your check.
Lois and I are deeply grateful to the people of Abbey Road for the care and concern
shown our family. In the weeks since you called me to be your settled pastor, a pernicious
and unwelcome intruder has entered our family’s lives: invasive ductal carcinoma.
Our calendar is filled with doctor’s appointments and infusion treatments, aimed at
eliminating this interloper from our lives. This is a walk not unfamiliar to some of you – perhaps to most of you. Cancer affects so many. Breast cancer, in particular, will touch one in
eight women in the course of a lifetime. My widowed mother, who lost her husband – my dad – to oral cancer in 2014,
believes we live in a culture that gives us radiation through our cell phones and weakens our immune systems by dependence on processed foods. Mom may be right, I don’t know. Why many untoward things happen is permanently
beyond our grasp.
I don’t like using the word “know,” because all that we understand is by definition incomplete. I prefer the
word “persuaded.”
Allow me to share something transcendent at this juncture, which may make some readers uncomfortable: I’m
persuaded God brought us together. You needed a pastor; our family needed a congregation. We didn’t realize how
much. Thank you for walking this road with us. Thanks in advance for understanding if you discover I am not at ARCC
during stated office hours. Much is unknown to us right now.
My first task is to get more deeply acquainted with each of you as quickly as humanly possible. I’d be happy to
pay a visit to your home, if you wish. Invite me. I’d be happy to meet you for coffee or a meal at one of Cape’s many
fine restaurants. Invite me. If you prefer to meet at the church, that’s just fine. Invite me. You know the number at
ARCC; my cell number is 573-382-7501. Email is arccpastor@gmail.com
I also have a second task – to become immersed in what it means to pastor in the Christian Church/Disciples of
Christ.
These two tasks, plus cancer, is plenty right now. I’m excited for the journey we will walk together and am
hopeful to see you in worship this Sunday, August 7 as I am installed by our regional minister. There will be a sermon,
too, the first of five messages in an Abbey Road series.
You have my promise not to use the pronoun “I” so much in future newsletter columns.
Looking forward to seeing you on the 7th in the sacred space of ARCC, I remain,
Rev. Jeff Long, D.Min
Pastor, ARCC
