WELCOME TO ALL WHO RECENTLY
ENTERED THE CHURCH
WELCOME TO ALL WHO ARE ALREADY
MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH
At this year’s Easter Vigil, seven of our smiling parishioners
completed their full initiation with the Catholic Church. They
received the Sacraments of Initiation, which are Baptism,
Confirmation and Eucharist. These do not merely mark us
as Catholics, but rather the sacramental grace from these
encounters with the Lord, direct us and guide us, in how we
are to live out our faith on a daily basis.
This is certainly a wonderful and spiritually enriching time
for the neophytes; however it is equally so for all of us too.
For our Church describes this period of our liturgical year
as, “A time for the community and the neophytes together
to grow in deepening their grasp of the paschal mystery
and in making it part of their lives through meditation on
the Gospel, sharing in the Eucharist, and doing the works
of charity” (RCIA # 244)
Therefore the question each of us can ask ourselves, is
whether I am truly making my faith a part of my day to day
life? Am I meditating on the Gospel to listen for God’s
calling to me? Am I doing all I can to partake in the
Eucharist on a regular basis? Am I putting the needs of
others before my own, both out in the world and within my
home?
In other words, from the neophytes, to those who have
been members of the Catholic Church for quite a while,
everyone is meant to continue to grow in our faith, and
deepen our understanding of Christ’s presence in our
lives. Thus whether it was weeks ago or years ago, let
each of us reflect more fully on the sacraments we have
received, and live out these sacramental graces each and
every day.

Sarah Koopman, Jessica Meinzen, Carra Llerena, Angela
Williams, Amy Scuglik, Jeff Lusby.
There is a term which is Neophytes, that refers to people
who have recently entered the Catholic Church. As the
Neophytes from our St. Columban community reflected on
the Easter Vigil, the following are thoughts of their
experience of that liturgy, and what it meant to them.
“I thought the service was very moving and it was
wonderful to be a part of it. So many emotions were going
through my head, particularly when I was being confirmed,
and I felt the oil being poured on me. What an honor it was
to be able to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in
front of my family, friends, my new church family and The
Lord!”
And a huge wave of gratitude to the many
members of our parish who are involved in RCIA.
From the catechists who break open the
Scriptures each Sunday, to those who present the
doctrines of our faith, to those who prepare
snacks and hospitality, to the sponsors and
godparents, to the people in the pews who pray
for those in the process – THANKS!
“This was my 5th consecutive year of attending the Vigil,
and I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I would
experience. But I was wrong. To be one of the first to enter
the dark Church, and watch it become filled with light from
everyone, was truly inspiring. The entire experience was
something that is difficult to describe with words, but it
was, and is, a life changing experience. I have always
known that St. Columban is a community, but that night, I
really felt just how much that means, and I am so happy to
be a part of it!”
If you have ever considered joining the Catholic Church,
perhaps the Holy Spirit is moving within you to do so right
now. Contact Scott in the Parish Office for more
information.
NEW PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS
JOHN ZAZYCKI
JOHN LaFRANCE
My name is John Zazycki and I have
been married to my wife Gretchen for 18
years. We have 3 daughters who are
students at St Columban School (Liesl
7th grade, Sophia 5th grade and Kalina
2nd grade). We have been parishioners
at St Columban for 10 years. I have
coached numerous sports teams at St
Columban and have also been involved
in the Parish Festival and the Knights of
Columbus. I look forward to the opportunity to continue my
service by joining the Pastoral Council.
My wife Sandy and our three children
have been members of St. Columban for
approximately twelve years. We have
lived in the area since 2000 and I have
been employed by the Chubb Group of
Insurance Companies for 27 years. At St
Columban, I was part of CHRP Team 42
and am now involved with the Knights of
Columbus. I am also a Eucharistic
Minister and our children attend ERE. I look forward to
working on the Pastoral Council and expanding my
involvement at St Columban.

Holy Thursday Happenings
THANK YOU FOR THE
COOKIES!
A heartfelt thank you from the Kairos
Prison Ministry for your generosity in baking cookies for the
men inside the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. You
baked over 300 dozen cookies, contributing to the 50,000
cookies brought into the prison. The impact was powerful
as inmates received the love of Jesus, recognizing through
these cookies the number of folks on the outside that truly
care about them as children of God. Several men on the
retreat made powerful and public decisions to follow Christ
and others found a new hope in God. Jim Crosby attended
the closing of the weekend hearing witness from these men
about the experience. Make a point to talk with him if you
want to hear some specifics of their stories.
Over 100 parishioners enjoyed a simple Soup Supper
before the Holy Thursday liturgy, hosted by Living Peace &
Justice. Thanks to the generosity of the attendees, $266
was collected in the freewill offering for
Catholic Relief Service.
I hope we can continue to call on you to participate in this
ministry by baking cookies for future retreats. If you have
an interest in hearing more details about the ministry, Mark
Stockman would be happy to discuss it with anyone:
mark.stockman@uc.edu or 556-4227. If you would rather
do some personal research on the ministry, please visit
www.kairosohio.org or search You Tube for “Kairos Prison
Ministry”.
Wizard of Oz
a huge success
Thank you for supporting the St.
Columban Drama Club’s production
of The Wizard of Oz! From April 3rd
through 6th, one hundred sixty seven students were involved in performances that brought
the audience to their feet. Everything from 1st grade
munchkins to 8th grade witches entertained the community
with delightful costuming, spectacular sets and amazing
talent.
The parish and school collected items for
St. Vincent de Paul on Holy Thursday.
Parish Activity Center Study
Finally we are thawing from a cold winter and coming out of
hibernation. Through the cold temperatures, we have been
busy working in the background on the campaign to realize
the Parish Activity Center / Gymnasium. The parish has
retained Professional Fundraising Concepts (PFC) of West
Chester, Ohio as our consultant to manage and coordinate
our next steps. PFC has over 30 years of experience and
success in raising funds for Catholic parishes and schools
in our region.
Due to our membership growth, we will support two Drama
Clubs next year: Junior Drama Club (grades K – 3) and
Drama Club (grades 4-8). We look forward to seeing you
at our upcoming performances of Jungle Book, Kids and
The Little Mermaid, Junior.
The first step is to conduct a study to evaluate the various
parish programs, facilities, and resources with respect to an
Activity Center. A cross section of the parish is being interviewed in an effort to collect their input, advice, and interest
in this space. The results of the study will be available in
June and will be used by the Pastoral Council, Finance
Council and the Campaign Committee to determine the
level of parish support and the appropriate next steps.
If you would like to participate in the interview process and
share your opinions, we would love to schedule a time for
you and the consultant to speak. Please contact Lisa
O’Connell in the Parish Office at 683-0105.

THE ARCHDIOCESEAN
OFFICE OF CHILD
PROTECTION
St. Columban's
Moms
Connection
would like to
thank Father
Larry and all
the families
that came to
the Easter
Story Time on
April 5th.
All persons who have attended a VIRTUS® Protecting
God’s Children Training Session must keep up with the
continuing education component of VIRTUS® by reading all
monthly VIRTUS® Training Bulletins. If a person falls
behind by three or more Bulletins (whether in consecutive
months or not) he / she must “catch up.” If the same
person does catch up, but then falls behind by three or
more Bulletins a second time, the cleric, employee or
volunteer will need to attend another VIRTUS® live Training
Session before he / she can have further contact with
children.
Got News?
The deadline for the Summer edition of The Columban is:
Tuesday, June 17
The Office of Safe Environment will send out reminder emails for the second time on or about June 1, 2014 to all
persons who are three or more VIRTUS® Bulletins behind
asking them to “catch up” with their reading. All persons
who are still behind by three or more Bulletins as of July 1,
2014 will be suspended in VIRTUS®. No suspended
person can have any contact with children until after he /
she attends a new VIRTUS® live Training Session, has
his / her VIRTUS® User Account reactivated, and then
“catches up” with all previously unread Bulletins.

studying to be a primary care physician. We celebrate her
success and look forward to her singing with us as her
schedule allows.
Prayer Through Music
It’s been another busy year
for the music ministers at St.
Columban! In addition to
leading music for their
regular schedule of liturgies, they participated in some
unique opportunities this year.
Our liturgies are enriched by the talents of all our music
ministers and we are grateful for the time and talent they
share with our parish and school. While the choirs and
handbell choir take a break over the summer, cantors and
the Parish Music Group will continue to lead music for Mass.
If you are a singer or instrumentalist and would like
information about music ministry opportunities, contact Mary
Bellman at the Parish Office.
~ Mary Bellman
In October, our parish choir, school choir, school handbell
choir, Parish Music Group and instrumentalists joined to
present a hymn festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of
the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. This document of the
Second Vatican Council reformed the celebration of the
Mass and Sacraments and shapes the way we worship
today. We sang songs that our Church has sung for Mass
during the past 50 years.
In February our school liturgy choir performed for the Notre
Dame sisters at St. Joseph Heights in Park Hills, Ky.
Children from the convent’s Julie Learning Center joined the
audience of retired sisters. Following the concert, our young
singers worked with the preschoolers, showing them how to
play the percussion instruments we brought with us.
HOLY THURSDAY
FUTURE
ST. COLUMBAN
MUSCIANS
On the First Sunday of Lent our parish choir joined the choirs
from St. Andrew and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton to sing for the
Rite of Election at the Cathedral. At this diocesan liturgy,
catechumens preparing for Baptism and candidates
preparing to be become members of the Catholic Church are
presented to the Archbishop. This is an important part of
their formation, and our choir was proud to be present.
EASTER VIGIL
Ringing for the Holy Thursday liturgy has become a tradition
for our school handbell choir and the ringers have an
important role. They help lead the procession at the end of
Mass when the Holy Eucharist is transferred from the church
to the Day Chapel for adoration and prayer. Our ringers ate
together at the Soup Supper then joined the choir to lead the
music at Mass.
On a Sunday during the Easter season, our adults and
young choir singers joined together to sing for a 9:45 a.m.
Mass.
On June 6 we will celebrate the
70th anniversary of D-Day, that
pivotal moment in World War II
when 160,000 allied troops landed
on the beach in Normandy, France
to fight the Nazi regime. The cost
was high – nearly 9,000 troops
were killed. Throughout France
and the USA this summer there are
anniversary celebrations to remember the impact this had
on the world, and to pray for peace. In this spirit, it is fitting
for our parish to gather so that we, too, may remember and
pray. To remember those who gave their lives on that day
for our freedom. To remember all who have served our
country in the armed forces on that day and since then. To
pray for those who are now serving in the military, protecting
the rights and freedoms we enjoy every day. To pray for our
nation, that we may seek always to walk with God.
Several years ago our 8th grade school handbell ringers
started a tradition – returning on the last day of school as
graduates and ringing for the closing liturgy. They came up
with this idea completely on their own and the tradition has
continued every year since. This year we’ll be saying
“goodbye” to three talented 8th graders who will begin high
school in the fall. Veronica France has rung in the school
hand bell choir for 2 years. Lily Melink and Alexa
Santamarina joined this year. They have been great ringers
and we thank them for their service to our parish!
We are happy to celebrate milestones with two other parish
musicians:
Jill Foster has served our parish as a handbell ringer, choir
member and cantor since 2006. A 2014 graduate of St.
Ursula Academy, Jill will be attending UD in the fall where
she’ll be studying for her BA in Theatre. We are so grateful
she has shared her love of music and talent with us for all
these years.
St. Columban will celebrate this D-Day anniversary with
Evening Prayer at 7:30 p.m., followed by a concert of music
by our choir and brass quintet. Everyone is welcome to join
us! A special invitation goes out to our veterans, whom we
will recognize at this event.
Teresa Whitaker has been part of our music ministry
program since she was in grade school, continuing to sing
throughout high school and college. She has just been
graduated from UC with a BS in Biology and was just
accepted into the UC College of Medicine. Teresa is
If you are a veteran and plan to join us for this event, or if
you would like more information please contact Mary
