be a Centennial Celebration Cookout on
Saturday, October 12 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
There will be food, face painting, pumpkin
painting/carving, small bonfire for smores, a
silent auction, and music. Quality items are
needed for the silent auction and volunteers are
needed to help with the various activities. Please

The week of September 23rd, was a very special
week; probably the best week I have experienced to date.
First we reunited with four ladies, who for various reasons
had not been to Opportunity House or Narrowgate
services since May. These ladies are very special to us
because 3 out of the 4, started coming to Opportunity
House and Narrowgate when we were feeding 10, in what
is now the furniture hut, at Opportunity House. That was
Monday, and it only gets better. Tuesday we announced
Opportunity House’s launch of a job program to give
people opportunities to work for an hourly wage; a much
needed ministry in this area. This created a lot of
excitement within the house. Assistant Director, Jeff
Mullis, has been working for 5 months to get this
started. Thanks Jeff for your hard work and love of
ministry.
On Thursday morning, Second Harvest mobile food
pantry was at MU MC and 15 volunteers from Opportunity
House helped 456 families, feeding approximately 1300
people. Later that night, 305 people attended worship
services at Forest Hills and Midway UMC’s. Could it get
better? On Friday a gentleman living in the shelter arrived
at Opportunity House; we will call him “Ray.” “Ray” is
suffering severely from Parkinson’s disease and it has
affected his speech so much so, that it’s almost impossible
to understand or hear what “Ray” is saying. “Ray” was in
the hospital on Wednesday and when they contacted his
family, they were told that they could no longer take care
of him. “Ray” was released and dropped off at the shelter
by Taxi. During our morning devotion, “Ray” motioned
that he had something to say. Although nobody could
hear or understand well, the room was silent. After two
minutes, “Ray” put his hand on his heart and started to
cry. I looked around the room and there was not a dry eye
to be seen. One street-hardened homeless man was so
overwhelmed that he had to leave the room.
Afterwards, “Ray” was showered with love. Hugs
from everyone put a smile back on “Ray’s” face. A lady
from the shelter spent 3 hours with “Ray” getting him
some clothes. At one point, “Ray” came into the room
with a starched dress shirt, coat, tie, and dress pants and
he was so happy to have church clothes. Later that day a
lady from Forest Hills met “Ray” and is presently working
to help him find the special care that he needs. I want to
say Thank You to that special angel.
I have never been more proud of the volunteers
and people outside of Opportunity House. Come Join the
Love!!!

During our fall stewardship emphasis (September 29th-November 10th), Calvary’s stewardship
ministry invites you to take time with your family to prayerfully consider ALL KINDS OF GIFTS
that God has placed into your lives for use in his kingdom. Use the “I Offer Myself to God” form
that was mailed to your family or pick up copies in the narthex to reflect on Calvary’s ministries
and how your gifts might be shared with them. Join us for a prayer Vigil on November 9th to
prepare for Consecration Sunday worship. Come on November 10th to Consecration Sunday
worship to offer your gifts to God’s service for 2014.

Jesus' command to life in our community of
faith by intentionally identifying those who
may need a call, card, visit, meal, or other
support for life's journeys.
Our next meeting will be October 28 at 7 p.m.
in the church parlor. This gathering will give
us time to support one another in our ministry,
look for areas that we may need to reshape our
ministry, and discuss our plans for 2014. All
care and concern volunteers are invited to
attend this meeting. As well, anyone interested
in becoming involved in this ministry is
welcome to join us on the 28. For more

2. What is the center of Lutheranism and does this
differ from other churches?
3. What does a life of discipleship look like?
4. How do I find my place in Calvary’s community
of faith?

Marilyn Elaine Little
(September 6, 1946 - October 9, 2013)
Marilyn Elaine Little, 67 years of
age, of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday,
October 9, 2013 at Hunter Woods Nursing
& Rehab in Charlotte.
Mrs. Little was born September 26, 1946 in
Pennsylvania to the late David Washington Ober, Jr.
and the late Catherine Holaham Ober. She was also
preceded in death by husband, David Nixon Little.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm,
Sunday, October 13, at Hartsell Funeral HomeConcord. The funeral service will be on Monday Oct.
14, at 2:00 pm at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord
officiated by J. Ed Hall.
Survivors include brother David Ober of
Harrisburg, PA, step-son, Kyle Little of Mountain City,
TN, and Pete Little of Mt. Holly, NC, brother- in-law,

Far from the children’s
tales depicted in picture
books
and
nursery
rhymes, the men and women highlighted in the
Bible were unnervingly real. They faltered.
They struggled. And at times, they fell short.
Yet God worked through them in surprising and
incredible ways to accomplish His purposes.
Scripture does not hide their weaknesses,
caricature their strengths, or spin their stories
as a display of human nobility. Instead, it
describes these heroes of the faith with
unflinching honesty and delivers an
unexpected ending: “God is not ashamed to be
called their God” (Hebrews 11:16).
