Volume 2 - Number 17 August 24, 2011 DEACON ELECTION 2011 –2012 The following individuals were elected on Sunday, 8-21-11 as deacons for three-year terms each: Allan Addis, Neil Ford, Ray Keys, Jimmy King, Kevin Mangan, Paul Tichenor and Larry McCall (filling a one-year unexpired term). All current deacons along with those newly elected are requested to attend the September 4th meeting beginning at 7:00 a.m. in the FLC. We will plan to ordain Jimmy King and Kevin Mangan as soon as possible. Please keep each of these men and their families in your prayers as they seek the Lord’s will in the leadership and guidance of our church. too. GOOD NEWS CLUB MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES Imagine you had a string 168 inches long, and every inch represented 1 hour. A child has in a week 168 hours to eat, sleep, play with friends, play on the computer, play video games, go to school. All the good things children get to do. Now imagine looking at one inch of this string... This is a visual to show how much or rather how little of that time is spent in Sunday School or church. If you bring your child to church every single week from the time they are 3 -13 years old –never out sick, never out on vacation, never miss for any reason that one hour a week all added together it would amount to 3 weeks and 1 day! 3 Weeks and 1 day of learning about Jesus! That is a frightening amount if being a good church goer is all a parent is depending on for the spiritual training of their child. But then what about the children whose parents don’t even take them to church. They have zero inches on the string. The statistics for children that attend church: 2 in 10. For every 10 children, statistically only 2 get taken to church. What about the other 8 – how are they going to hear, how are they going to stand up against all the lies our world our culture is teaching our children with, all the temptations, heartbreak in the homes? And whom do they have to pray for them? God cares about their problems. I love Good News Club because it gives me a way to tell them that truth. That’s why I love Good News Club—I get to tell and show them I care. I get to be a part of them hearing about Jesus Good News Club is a wonderful opportunity to influence the life of other children with the Gospel. …and I can be a missionary right here. What a mission field God has opened up and entrusted to our church – the children at Walhalla Elementary. I need all of you to be in prayer for these children. And I need some of you to come with me to Good News Club where you’ll get to influence children from other parts of the world and all walks of life. If you’re a home school family – it’s a great family ministry and your young children get Bible class at the same time. If you’re Senior High or College, perhaps your schedule would allow you to come help at Good News Club. If you’re between jobs, join our team for ―in the in between‖ time. If you’re retired, then retire Tuesday afternoons (2:15p.m.-4:15p.m. to be exact) to spend with our kids at Walhalla Elementary. If you can listen to prayer requests, listen to their memory verses, give some hugs, then this is the job description for Grade Shepherds of our Good News Club. Sign up for Preschool and Children’s Choirs and Awana beginning with a start-up date in September. These dates are available on the September 2011 calendar included with this newsletter. In addition our first movie night was well attended and over 80 folks enjoyed pizza at the Pizza Buffet in Seneca afterwards. Please join us again this Sunday at 5:30 p.m. for our second movie night, Fireproof and another pizza fellowship. Bring a friend! Bring your family. Join us for a great evening! Fund Raising Efforts for the Hugh’s property parking lot! As was approved by the church we are attempting to raise $30,000.00 for the building fund so that we do not have to borrow money to complete this next project. However, we feel that this project is worthy enough that we will borrow the balance not raised by October 1st. Please pray about an extra love offering in September to help with this effort. No further projects will be started until we have paid off the balance of any loan we incur. “Courageous” The Movie… . “Courageous” From the information that we have gathered ( www.courageousthemovie.com ), the movie “Courageous” will be shown in the following theatres starting on September 30th. Oconee County Crusade – October 2-5, Seneca High School Football Stadium…. Begin praying today. A prayer guide is being e-mailed out to everyone on my e-mail list to help with prayers. I will be attending a discussion meeting at the association office and bring back requests for volunteers to help during the crusade week. In the mean time, pray. Though the Bible for Dummies! Beginning Wednesday, September 7th we will begin an overview walk through the Bible during our Wednesday evening service. The study is just that, “an overview” but will give you basic knowledge that show how the Bible is tied together from Genesis to Revelation. Masterlife: The Disciples Cross! Beginning on Sunday, September 11th in the p.m. service (5:30 pm) we will start a process of developing a lifelong, obedient relationship with Jesus Christ. “The Disciples Cross” will be the basis for studying six (6) biblical disciplines of a disciple. After you drop off your children for Awana, please join us in the sanctuary for our study. Renovation Report - August 24, 2011 College Street Baptist Church is “called” to follow the great commission to spread God’s message of Love and Salvation through Jesus Christ in Walhalla and the World. We do this individually and jointly with over “50” ministries. We celebrated 100 years as a church, REACHING OUT in 2009. We must continue to answer Jesus’ call found in Mathew 28:19-20. Our facilities support the ministry. In 2007-2008, major renovation projects began to repair and upgrade facilities. The Family Life Center (FLC) interior was first. Repairs and additions of heat and air conditioning to the gym and entrance changes were made. This facility is used in all weather conditions by the church and community. We gave to the building fund and also borrowed $75,000. A three-phase approach to be debt free, complete renovation, purchase available property and continue improvements to the facilities was approved. The Hughs house beside the office was purchased. A four week “summer project at home” with church teams and contract support completed a major portion of the Sunday school interior repairs. In 2009, the Hugh’s house was removed successfully. The buyer disassembled the house, packed it in sea-land containers and contributed the structure to the Oconee Heritage Museum. Also in 2009, a new metal roof was placed on the FLC and the main building Sunday school windows were replaced. In 2010, NO DEBT was achieved. Work was slowed by economic conditions. MINISTRIES continued. The economic conditions created a higher need for ministries. Where possible, we used building fund projects to help some who had limited work available. Youth and adults volunteers handled projects in the youth room and dining area in the FLC. The Abbott property north of the office was not in renovation but became available and was purchased. The FLC dining, kitchen, and FLC upper SS areas were renovated. In 2011 the planned steeple renovations have been completed and the steeple illuminated. The FLC youth room has been completed with youth help and contractor support. Two furnace rooms have been fire proofed. Additions to the food Bank ministry area are near completion. Grading and paving of the Hugh’s lot is the next project and should be finished before winter this year. As of Aug 9, 2011 we have $5100 toward this $25,000-$30,000 project. Continued giving and volunteer support has allowed projects to be completed with less expense and no debt through direct contracting. Projects are scheduled and adjusted based on building fund receipts while continuing operating expenses, giving to local needs and supporting the cooperative program. Near the time for releasing a project, a detailed study of current costs and actual items to be performed is prepared. Current thinking and cost determines actual work. To date we have spent $350,000 on the above renovations and land purchases and the church is debt free. Phase status report: Phase 1: Complete 8/1/11 Phase 2 projects: Hugh’s lot paving preparation. We have approval to borrow funds if needed after October 1, but we would like to complete this project without a debt. A debt will delay the next project until paid off. Teams are studying the sanctuary, SS building, main building roof, grounds and making study lists for discussion sessions. Phase 3: The drop off area, greeting area and parking lot repairs are included in the study for phase 2 because they are tied together by structure and access. Thank you for giving your tithe, offerings, support gifts, fund raising and memorials to the budget, building fund and many ministries. Thank you for giving of your time to projects and ministries. It’s great to see God use our faithfulness in so many ways. Julian Davis, Property Chairman Fall Festival Coordinators Needed Following is a list of coordinators still needed to help with this year’s Fall Festival. All we’re asking at this time is for people to step up and take on the role of leadership in each of these areas. Please pray about our festival, the lives that can be reached and your role in helping. If you feel GOD leading you to coordinate (or co-coordinate) in one of these areas or if you would like a little more information about a particular area please get in touch with one of us. Once we have all the coordinators in place we’ll meet with them to provide more information. The coordinators will put together their teams to assist in carrying out their chosen responsibility. We would like to have all coordinators in place by Sunday, September 11. This will allow us 6 weeks to finalize plans for the festival. God said in 2nd Chronicles 7:14 that if “His people who are called by His name would humble themselves , pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways, then He would hear from heaven and heal our land.” The following weeks of prayer guides are just that, guides to jump-start your time of prayer. It is an awesome responsibility to seek His heart for our county. “The only prayers that are not answered are the ones not prayed.” Day 1, August 24: For God to open the heavens and come down and make His Presence known to all of Oconee County. Day 2, August 25: Pray for speaker Ken Freeman; pray for his continued health, safety, and strength. Pray for leading of the Holy Spirit in preparation of messages. Day 3, August 26: Pray for all churches in Oconee County to begin praying and believing God for life changes in the lost and brokenhearted. Day 4, August 27: Pray for volunteer decision counselors to be good listeners, having the heart of God see all come to know Him. Day 5, August 28: Pray for Publicity Chairman, Jimmy Watt. Pray for wisdom and creativity in promoting this crusade. Pray for volunteers to publicize the event, and for all of us to spread the word. Day 6, August 29: Pray for Finance Chairman, Kirk Messick. Pray for resources to be provided as needed. Day 7, August 30: Pray for Counseling Chairman, John Watkins, as he prepares for training events. Pray for volunteers to help with this ministry. Day 8, August 31: Pray for all local pastors and staff members to have a heart to be involved with this crusade to see the lost and brokenhearted come to Jesus. Day 8, September 1: Pray for all believers to catch the vision of and participate in what God wants to do in these last days! Day 10, September 2: Pray for our towns and communities, and that those who are participating in crime, drugs, etc. would be drawn by His presence during this crusade. Day 11, September 3: Pray for Youth Leader, Brad Kelley, as he prepares special ministry for our youth. Note: The continuation of these prayer guides will be placed in your bulletin each Sunday as well as the following publications of The Beacon. Please remember these specific requests in your daily prayer.
