Christian Stewardship
Saint James in his powerful letter which considers the gift of speech observes that one who does not
offend in speech is truly perfect. This powerful letter of Saint James serves as a Lenten reflection and
an examination of conscience for all. All of us need and sometimes appreciate criticism. Criticism is
easier to accept and more productive when the person chooses to identify himself or herself by
name. There may be room for dialogue or for some information that the other person needs to know.
All of us also appreciate positive reinforcement. Human and Christian growth is facilitated when the
person making the suggestion or offering the criticism speaks directly with the person being
criticized. These principles work well not only in the Christian Community but also in the family.
Letters written anonymously to an individual do not allow the opportunity for a response or a
constructive dialogue.
Msgr. Charles H. Hagan
The church teaches us to want to
spend time with Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament. The source of all strength
and power, and the summit of faith.

FORMED Highlights for the Fourth Sunday in Lent
Program: Opening the Word™, Year C (5 min)
Insights for this Sunday’s Scriptural Readings
The story of the Prodigal Son is one of the most
familiar of all of Jesus’ parables. However, when we
look more closely at the historical setting for this story
we see that, for Jesus’ original audience in the first
century, it would have been a shocking story. Do you
know why?

Banishing God From Daily Life
Chief Duties of Christian Citizens by Pope Leo XIII

E-mail Address:
__________________________________________
Because human reason has been able, by scientific
investigation, to disclose many secrets of nature, men have
taken upon themselves to think that they can banish God and
His divine authority from their daily life. Deceived by this
error, they hand over to human nature the sovereignty which
they have snatched from God; they proclaim that nature
alone is the foundation and rule of all truth; and that all the
duties of religion proceed from it.
From this it follows that nothing has been taught us as
divine; that obedience cannot be paid to the laws of Christian
morality or the Church; that she has no power and no right to
make laws. Nay, even there can be no place for the Church in
the commonwealth. With all their might they struggle to put
themselves at the head of civil affairs in order that they may
more easily propagate these doctrines and fashion the public
laws and morals. Everywhere the Catholic religion is either
openly attacked or secretly assailed; and by the great license
permitted in these perverse errors, the public profession of
Christianity is often hindered by many difficulties.
In so evil a state of affairs, it is the first duty of everyone to
reflect and be on his guard, that he may, by vigilant care,
securely defend the faith which he has received, by guarding
against dangers and by being always armed against the
fallacies and sophisms of the day. To give steadfastness to
virtue, we judge that it is most useful and suitable in these
times to study diligently Christian doctrine, according to
each one’s capacity and opportunity, and to imbue the mind
as far as possible with those things of religion which can be
obtained by human reason. And, since our faith must not
only be pure and uncorrupted in our minds, but also increase
constantly day by day, the humble petition of the Apostles
must be often repeated, “Lord increase our faith.”
The Parish Choir
Members of the Parish Choir meet in the Church
on Thursday evenings at 7:30PM for choir
practice and sing at one of the Masses each
weekend. The choir schedule is printed well in
advance so that members can fit the Choir Mass
time into their schedule.
If you think that you might enjoy singing in the
choir, please consider fitting it into your schedule
and call Carl Kunkel at 215-345-8782!
