For example, St. Hildegarde von Bingen (canonized in 2012) was a 12th century German Abbess who composed beautiful melodies that are still sung in concert halls. Now let’s fast forward to 2016. The music we sing at Mass also has ancient roots. After all, our “Glory to God” was first sung by the angels to the shepherds some 2,000 years ago! The Psalms we sing were written to melodies back in Old Testament times. And the hymns we sing together on Sundays and Holy Days are often chosen to amplify our daily readings. As we sing and listen, we might hear God speaking to our hearts, minds, and souls, drawing us closer to Him and transforming us for good. As St. Augustine reminds us, “The person who sings praise, that person is not only singing but is also loving Him whom she/he is singing about.” And if you’d like to listen to sacred music outside of church, try Masses and settings by Palestrina, Mozart, Vivaldi and Hildegarde: they will surely bless you!! The Mentors of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Prison Ministry would like to graciously thank those generous individuals and parishioners that recently donated winter coats for the women in Bucks County Corrections work release. Many have been able to keep warm while traversing daily for work at local businesses. Additionally, fifty four inmates attended Christmas Eve Mass celebrated by Msgr. Charles Hagan (also hearing confession) with mentors attending and music provided by mentor from St. Mark’s Orthodox Church in Wrightstown. Over the Christmas holyday seven individuals released from correction where aided in their return to society; scripture 12 step recovery study and Eucharistic services held weekly.
