My stomach. It would seem that my sweet tooth may be catching up with me. I’ve outpaced it for years as I come from a family of body types where we could, as they say, “sit on a dime and still see nine cents of it”. Donuts, gravy, desserts, and the entire food genus that camps under the heading of “Deep-fat Fried” posed no threat of weight gain. Until recently. Perhaps that is why the television ad for “Weight Watchers” caught my eye. Though initially drawn to the ad by the subject of losing weight, I quickly became more interested not in “what” they were selling but in “how”. They called their new Weight Watchers program “Beyond the Scale” and, it allowed the participant to, in the words of the voice-over announcer, “define your own success”. Slickly produced, the gist of the message was that participants no longer had to weigh themselves on a scale. Instead, they were free to define what they thought would constitute progress and “success”. As the church lady from “Saturday Night Live” used to say, “How conveeenient!” Imagine if you will, the absurdity of a weight loss program where you could define success as only eating three boxes of Girl Scout “Thin Mints” instead of four. Or, determining that my “success” would be making sure that I eat a side-salad with my Big Mac and Supersize fries. Why, with such an approach, the possibilities of success would be guaranteed. (After all, scales are such troublesome things.) This defining of our own success is emblematic of an attitude and practice that has embedded itself into...not only weight loss programs…but our American culture. KJGT 88.3 Waconia, MN KJWR 90.9 FM Windom, MN KJTS 88.3 FM New Ulm, MN KJTT 88.3 FM Story City, IA By Matt Dorfner, Executive Director From education, where “inventive spelling” allows students to spell words any way they would like, to a weight loss program where you never have to actually weigh yourself, this practice of defining your own success has already moved past many church doors and is firmly ensconced in many pews. Reason would demand that for a weight loss program to be successful, you need to …at least occasionally…step on the scale. And as any Christian knows, we need to…regularly…compare our behavior, spiritual growth and attitude to the scale of God’s Word and the person of Jesus Christ. We are not free to define our own spiritual success by some artificial markers that we can set and reposition depending upon our mood or need for self-affirmation. True success for the Christian is measured by how Christlike we are in our thoughts, attitude, heart and practice. Such a comparison is never “convenient” and usually leaves us acknowledging our fairly consistent failures. But it is the needed first (and regular) step in turning to Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit who alone can transform us into a “success” in the eyes of God. 1 ’Sup at KJCY? through what we call “Kinship Crossroads Reports”. I also share this same middle name of Marie with my two sisters!” – Chris Walters, KJCY Secretary “My middle name is Anne. My mom says that they chose the spelling of my middle name because of Princess Anne who was in the news at the time. They thought it was more impressive and they thought I was special, so they went with Anne for the spelling.” – Beth Siebrands, Kinship Bookkeeper “My middle name is a bit unusual…Quovadis. I was given my middle name by my dad. His mother, my grandmother, was named Vadis. My dad happened to see a movie by the name of "Quo Vadis" and that is how I got my middle name!” – Sheri Dardis, Kinship Christian Radio Prayerline Coordinator “My middle name is Marion - Lynette Marion (Gruett) Dorfner. My mother's youngest sister's name is Marian and I know I was given my middle name to honor her, but I don't know why it is spelled differently. I even called my dad to ask him but he could not recall the reason.” – Lynette Dorfner, KJCY and KJIA Office Manager 2 There’ s Room for You! News from KJIA By Lynette Dorfner KJIA Office Manager As I reflected on our first 2016 KJIA Ambassador meeting held on April 4th, at the “Pizza Ranch” in Spirit Lake, (see photo) the desire for continued growth floods my thoughts. Kinship Christian Radio does continue to grow both wider and deeper as a ministry and an exciting part of that growth includes KJIA. While attendance at the Ambassador meeting was superb, there is always room…and need… for more participants. Would you be willing to meet with other KJIA enthusiasts once a month from March to November to share your ideas, time and talents to promote the Good News of Jesus? Then, there is room on the Ambassador Committee Group for you! One of our largest outreach projects is our KJIA booth at the Clay County Fair in Spencer. KJIA has an informative display at this busy fair manned by volunteers and staff that can’t wait to tell others why they listen to Christian radio. There is room for your name on the fair schedule and the KJIA volunteer list. Do you have a snazzy vehicle that you would love to drive in an area parade? Or maybe you would like to walk in the parade handing out KJIA literature and goodies? There is lots of room on the parade signup sheet for you and your family! You may have caught on by now – the ministry has room for you in any way God would call you to serve. Please contact Bev or myself at the KJIA Outreach and Business office in Spirit Lake by calling 712-332-2428 to find out more about all the opportunities we have for KJIA friends like you. Most importantly – KJIA and Kinship Christian Radio want to remind Hereʼs a photo of the KJIA Ambassadors between laughs and you there is room for you in the family of God. There is always room for all bites of pizza at the recent KJIA Ambassadors meeting! From that come to faith and desire to sit at the feet of Jesus. God Bless you and left to right, Linda Prince, Sandy Krout, Marilyn Strickland, Jan thank you for helping fill the spaces! Bowles, Betty Crandall, Matt Dorfner, Mick Noteboom, Karleen Noteboom, Kathy Fueston, Jan Kischer and Karl Kischer. “My middle name is Christopher. I have never cared for it for some reason. But, I believe my mother chose it because of Christopher Robin in Winnie-the-Pooh, which was one of her favorite books… and soon became one of my favorites as she read it over and over to me!” – Jay Rudolph, KJYL Operations Manager “I was given the middle name of Grace. My mother’s first name is Grace; she was named after her grandmother, Gysbertje, who came to America from the Netherlands in 1911. We passed this namesake on to our youngest daughter. – Bev Cother, KJIA Secretary “My middle name is Ray. I was named after my maternal grandfather. His name was Raymond Erickson.” – Doug Johnson, Kinship Announcer “YOU LIKE US, YOU REALLY LIKE US!” Are you one of the nearly 1200 people who have “liked” us on Facebook? If not, donʼt you think itʼs about time!?! You can follow us on Kinship Christian Radio and see regular posts including pictures at our stations showing what we or our volunteers are up to, blog posts, information on upcoming Kinship Christian Radio events and inspiration for your day. You also are able to send us a message or post a review on the ministry of Kinship Christian Radio. Weʼre hoping youʼll “like” us today! 7 Computer Prayer? “It Was Good to Be Queen” Well, not exactly. Rather, itʼs a way to access a praying community of Kinship Christian Radio listeners through a computer or smartphone. Itʼs called “Prayerworks” and itʼs a simple way for you to share a prayer request or need in your life at any time of the day or night. For example…letʼs say there is a sudden illness in your family that could use some prayer support from fellow believers. Simply click on the “Prayerworks” icon located in the left margin at KinshipRadio.org. As you do, you will be taken to a page where you can enter in your prayer request. Then click on “Submit a Prayer”, enter your prayer request and click on “Add Prayer Request”. As you do, your prayer request is posted on the Prayerworks page for others to read. (No need to be concerned about your security or anonymity either as no one is able to see your name or email address.) All who see your prayer request can then lift your need up in prayer and even tap the “I Have Prayed for This Person” response button that will let you know they have seen and are praying for your need. (Again, no names or emails are transmitted so anonymity is assured.) Itʼs easy, secure and available anytime. Check it out at KinshipRadio.org! “My middle name is Neal. It was the middle name of my Grandfather, James Neal Fowler. My Grandfather was a pilot in the Air Force, and also served as a radio operator on a B-29 Superfortress. In 1952, during a test flight, his plane was accidentally shot down, and he didn’t survive. My mother was two years old at the time. I’ve always been incredibly honored to share the name of my Grandfather.” – Allen Jones, Kinship Announcer “My middle name in Joline, which is my moms middle name. “ – Melodee Roberts, KJYL Secretary “In’s Ann. Because everyone knows that it’s the best middle name for Beth :)“ – Beth Erdman, KJLY Secretary “Me? At a Loss for Words?” 6 By Allen Jones Kinship Christian Radio Announcer I find myself at a loss for words. Perhaps you might be thinking, “Allen, I don’t know if you’re capable of not finding something to ramble about…” But alas, it’s true. I was really excited to write about the page, but now as I sit here seeking for the proper words, I just don’t know where to start! How do I begin to describe the insightful, word of God filled writings of Dan Jones that you will find on the “Kinship Blog”?! How do I describe the weekly pages of Dan in a few measly words! I was tempted to simply copy and paste his most recent blog. Not for the sake of ease, but so you can read what he writes! It’s that good! To give a little background, when Dan was a younger man he had dreams of becoming an outdoor fishing journalist. I’ve always imagined Dan sitting by a stream, line in the water, writing about his fishing excursions when Christ suddenly approaches him and asks him to become a fisher of men, just like Peter. Hence, his writing talents became applied to furthering the kingdom of God. I don’t think it happened exactly like that, but truthfully, you would be hard pressed to find a man who is more adamant about fishing for God than Dan Jones. His passion for scripture, God, and spreading the Gospel explodes out of every page he writes. And he’s humble too! (He’ll probably hate that I wrote so many nice things about him) Truly, I am nothing short of blessed every time I read Dan’s weekly blogs. But don’t take my word for it! Go read it for yourself, at www.Kinshipradio.org and click on the orange “B” on the left hand side of the page. (We also post Dan’s blogs on our Facebook page under Kinship Christian Radio.) And if you enjoy the writings of this lowly announcer, then you really will want to check out the page, as I also contribute a blog post from time to time! Though the tiaras were not physically apparent, it was obvious that the over 600 area women who attended the 7th Annual “KJLY Day for Women” felt like a queen this past April 2nd at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mankato. Laughing along with noted author, Liz Curtis Higgs, who spoke in each of the main sessions on subjects from her latest best-selling book “It’s Good to Be Queen”, the Kleenex were also apparent as hearts were touched and friendships established over the fabulous breakout “mini-sessions” and a powerful message from Rachel Britz of St. Peter. Of course, the luncheon was a delight and snacks were, well, fit for a Queen! All of this, combined with the incredible music of “The Sonflowerz”, resulted in many saying that this year’s event was our “best-ever”! As we look ahead to next year’s “Day for Women”, we want to express our thanks to the Lord for His presence and grace. We would also like to extend our appreciation to chief event organizer and KJLY staff member, Tracy Jones, and the entire Kinship Christian Radio staff, board, and the many volunteers who helped make this a day of blessing for all who attended. Of course, we want to especially thank the staff and members of Hosanna Lutheran church in Mankato who graciously opened their facility to us and joined hands in service to make the day an extraordinary one of ministry for all. Thanks, too, to our corporate and business sponsors who helped underwrite a portion of this year’s event….Gold Level sponsors “Lindsay Window and Door” of Mankato and “Partners Funding, Inc” of Fairmont and Bronze Level sponsors; “Thistleberry” of Amboy, “Homestead Realty” of Winnebago, “The Lighthouse Christian Book and Gift” of Mankato, “Burtis Chiropractic” of Fairmont and “Freedom Counseling Center” of North Mankato. We were blessed to count among the over 600 attendees to the recent KJLY “Day for Women” a number of church womenʼs groups including these friends who attend Faith United Methodist Church of Waseca. This fine group of women from the KJIA listening area were among those who attended the recent Kinship Christian Radio “Day for Women” seminar featuring Liz Curtis Higgs (l to r) Jan Bowles, Carolyn Butterworth, Becky Welch, Vicki Schuette, Amy Stover, Christy Thompson, and Bev Cother. 3 Jay Rudolph – KJYL Operations Manager NEWS FROM KJYL Another exciting season of ministry is springing forth! We have hopes for some fun and spiritually uplifting concerts/events this summer and fall… but it’s just too soon to let the cat out of the bag! We can confirm though that you’ll again be seeing the KJYL banner and lots of volunteer walkers in several parades this summer and fall. From Algona to Story City and Dows to the Storm Lake area… north to south, and east to west, we expect to be blanketing our region by appearing in a number of parades again this year! Probably the biggest news around KJYL lately is the recent installation of our new, more efficient and more reliable transmitter. It’s still exciting to see it in action -- or even more to “not hear” it, as it is so much quieter in operation than the previous one! And, along with some other recent technical improvements, I believe KJYL is now sounding better than ever! Also, we’re starting to look better than we have in a long time too… thanks to the remodeling taking place at the apartment complex next to our building (see the photo). It’s been a long time coming, but the new owner of the complex next door to the KJYL studios has a crew that is working very diligently to improve both the interior and the façade of the declining building, so that our entire neighborhood here will be much more attractive. We look forward to hopefully seeing you at one of the parades or other ministry events we participate in this year… and thanks, as always, for your support of KJYL and KJTT! A massive remodeling project taking place at the apartment complex next to KJYL's building is improving the scenery for the entire area. Ever wonder what "Mailing Day" looks like at KJYL? Here's a great picture of some of our cherished KJYL volunteers Jan Cooper, Elaine Carlson, Marian Denclau (foreground) and Nelda Kiley, Ruth Siemens, Pat Uri, Joyce Halbach, Doryce Halverson and Margaret Johnson. (background) Thanks, Ladies! Where the Wind Blows (really!) Strong If you live anywhere in Kinship Christian Radio land, you are no stranger to wind. Wind, along with snow, rain, thunderstorms, heat, lightning, sub-zero cold and the occasional dust cloud are all pretty much the status quo across southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. Located as we are in the crosshairs of potent “Alberta (Canada) Clippers” it’s a sure bet that “calm” conditions are a fairly rare occurrence. Of course, these winds do blow us a lot of good, too…witness the scores of windfarms in our region churning out green energy by the megawatt and providing landowners with another source of income from tower leases. Even though we all have our share of wind, there is one region of our listening area where the physical winds seem to blow with even a little more than the usual gusto - southwest Minnesota - the home of the Kinship Christian Radio ministry of KJWR. Broadcasting at 90.9 FM and serving the communities of Windom, Redwood Falls, Marshall, Mountain Lake and greater southwest Min- nesota, the KJWR radio ministry shares God’s Word and song 24 hours-a-day with the residents and many travelers who crisscross the region daily on the likes of Highways 71, 14, 60, 23 and 19. It is evident from the many vibrant individuals, churches and faith communities located in the KJWR region that the Holy Spirit is blowing strong and steady in many hearts. In fact, let’s pray that the Wind of the Spirit would work through His Word, churches and ministries like KJWR to blow even stronger through this beautiful region of crops, prairie and a hardworking and generous people. “My middle name is Marie. I am named after a very special Aunt of my mom’s. Aunt Marie was this loving, caring, giving lady who always had a big hug when you visited her. I also share my love of baking with her. My favorite wedding shower gift was a cookbook that she gave me and wrote a note inside the front cover so I’ll always have her with me when I bake.” – Tracy Jones, Kinship Christian Radio Senior Bookkeeper “My middle name is Marcus. I am named after my father, Earl Marcus Bohnett. I was tagged "Mark" to limit confusion in the home.” – Earl “Mark” Bohnett, Kinship Christian Radio Chief Engineer A NIGHT LIGHT By Matt Dorfner, Executive Director A few months ago I installed a night light…with its own digital timer… in the hallway near our bedroom. Itʼs simple and the perfect solution for someone like me who could use a light on my inevitable middle-of-the-night way to the you-know-where. A different type of “Night Light” is our new 90-minute program you can hear every weeknight from 10:30 PM – Midnight on Kinship Christian radio. Hosted by our own Steve Ware, “Night Light” features a wonderful musical blend of tasteful praise, hymns and Christian classics. As its name implies, the program strives to be a spiritual light in the night as Steve shares an engaging mixture of story, thoughts, scriptures and music to settle your spirit and bring you hope and encouragement at the end of the day. Discover what so many listeners are already enjoying as you join Steve Ware for “Night Light” each weekday evening from 10:30-Midnight on Kinship Christian Radio. 4 A PLANTING FOR THE LORD This month of May will see a lot of planting. Farmers will be running full-tilt with their spring planting of crops and homeowners will be hoeing and planting their vegetable gardens with an eye towards a 4 or 5 month growing season. Of course, some crops take longer than one summer to mature. Those of us who plant a new apple tree are probably looking at 3-5 years prior to biting into our first apple. There is another type of “crop” that requires an even longer growing season…the gift intentions you make through your Will or Estate Plan. For most who make such gifts to a loved one or ministry, it will likely be decades before your presentday kindness ripens into a tangible financial blessing. When it comes to something as serious as estate planning, you will certainly want to provide first for your family and loved ones. After that aspect of a wise estate plan is fulfilled, you can also choose to designate a fixed dollar amount or per- centage of your estate to the ministry of Kinship Christian Radio through a simple statement included in your will. Of course, we would suggest you consider this subject with your spouse, lawyer and close family members prior to making any such estate decisions. As you do include Kinship Christian Radio in your estate planning, you can know that when you are rejoicing in heaven, your gift bequest will be hard at work here on a spiritually darkening earth furthering the proclamation of the bright and hopeful Gospel of Jesus Christ. 5
