DCS Mission Statement Equipping Children for LIFE Wow, it’s October already! The school year is going by much too quickly. Last week Friday all of the classes, Kindergarten through Grade Seven, participated in picking up the garbage on the playground, by our neighbours’ fence lines, around the sidewalk areas surrounding the school, on our adopted street: 52A Street, and in Magee Park. All the students wore disposable gloves and filled many bags with their findings. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the student body is presently collecting canned and boxed food for the South Delta Food Bank located at Ladner Christian Fellowship. The food bank at Ladner Christian Fellowship strives to meet the short-term need for food and find long-term solutions to hunger. Our canned food drive is a valuable part of education at Delta Christian School. Through this project students are encouraged to show love for their neighbours in a practical way. The grade seven students will be accompanying Avtar on Wednesday, October 14 first thing in the morning to drop off all of the collected items at Ladner Christian Fellowship. Please encourage your child(ren) to participate in this Thanksgiving project. Thursday is the last day of school this week. The teachers will be attending the Christian Teachers Association of B.C.’s annual convention this week Friday. This year our teachers will be joining with Christian teachers from Washington State at Lynden Christian Schools for the annual convention. This year’s convention is centered on conversing with other teachers. Teachers will attend workshops led by various Christian School leaders discussing the following questions: Does our understanding of worldview go deep enough? Muhammad, Lao-zi, Krishna, Jesus: What’s the difference . . . and what difference does it make? How do I integrate meaningful uses of technology into my (elementary/middle sch00l) classroom? st How can we create independent, self-regulated learners for the 21 century? How do we get peculiar? How do I get students to ask questions about differences in the world out there? Go back to go forward: how can I renew my passion for teaching? [continued on next page] DELTA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 8. What does project based learning do for a student, for a teacher and for a school community? 9. How do I answer students’ questions about differences in the world out there? We hold our chapel services every Thursday at 2:15. This is a weekly opportunity for our students, our staff and our families to come together to sing praises to our King, enjoy Christian fellowship with each other and learn more about how we are the Body of Christ. Please join us if you can. Every chapel service begins with “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good, His love endures forever”. This will be especially meaningful this week Thursday as we celebrate our thanksgiving chapel. “Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods.” PSALM 95:2-3 Call for a Prayer Group A Mom emailed me today with a great idea. In her email she stated "As I was praying for our school this morning, I realized that we haven't had a regular prayer time/group at our school for some time." For many years we had a group of parents meet on chapel days to pray over the school and the blessings and concerns of school community members. A weekly prayer group might be too much for some to come to but perhaps once a month would work. It would be great to offer a prayer time that allows teachers to join in as well as parents/society members. Once a month at 3 pm and childcare shouldn't be an issue as the older ones can play outside and the younger ones would be welcome to stay with their parents. When we had the prayer group years ago, the young children were welcome to stay and it worked well. If you want to join the prayer group, please email us at kluska.teacher@gmail.com or tony@deltachristianschool.org with which days would work for you. If we go ahead with this we will publish reminders in the Ripples about upcoming prayer times. Also, last year we had a group of parents meet twice a month for an evening Bible study. The parents really enjoyed these evenings and I have had some parents express interest in doing that again this year. Please prayerfully consider participating in a Bible study with other Delta Christian School parents. Also, pray for someone to step forward to lead the Bible study this year and contact the office with the names of school community members who are willing to lead the Bible study.
