At its core Chanukah is about miracles. In our Religious School
we teach our students about the miracle of the oil that lasted
for eight days. When the Maccabees recovered the Temple from
the Romans, they found enough oil to light the sacred menorah

for only one day. Miraculously, it lasted for eight days, the
amount of time needed to produce more oil. As we get older we learn about
the battle that took place between the small Maccabee army and the large
Syrian army. It was truly a miracle that such a small band of soldiers were
able to defeat a large army.
Every year we marvel at the miracles of Chanukah that enabled Judaism
to continue. Should we be surprised? It seems that Judaism is a story of
miracles. We are a people who time and again beat the odds, survive the
destruction, and continue to thrive. Last month I had the opportunity to travel
to Cuba. Theirs is a story of miracles. It is a miracle that the small community
of 1,500 Jews decided to rebuild and relearn Judaism after being unable to
observe Jewish ritual and practices for the last 30 years. Teenagers in Cuba
are taking it upon themselves to learn the prayers and Torah readings in order
to lead services for their community. They are an inspiration to us all.

We have also seen many miracles here in Minneapolis this year. We have
much to be proud of – from the defeat of the marriage amendment to the way
in which our community came together on Thanksgiving Day to feed so many.
It is inspiring to me that on a day devoted to decadence so many of you give
of your time to care for others.
As you watch the Chanukah lights flicker, I hope that you will keep all of
these miracles in mind, as well as those that have occurred in your own
families. I pray that these will warm your hearts and souls as we confront the
cold months ahead. May the lights be a reminder of the blessings that surround
us each day. I wish you a Happy Chanukah filled with warmth, light and
miracles.

Potato Latkes
Serves 5-6; about 18 latkes
6 medium potatoes, peeled and grated
1 onion, peeled and grated
2 eggs, slightly beaten
2 tablespoons matzo meal or flour
(matzo meal works better)
1 teaspoon salt
Vegetable oil for frying
Toppings: See our Facebook page for topping

Squeeze out liquid from potatoes or drain in a
colander a few minutes. Mix with the grated onion,
eggs, matzo meal (or flour) and salt. Heat the oil in
a frying pan, using enough to cover the latkes amply.
Once the oil sizzles when a droplet of water is added,
drop the batter from a tablespoon or other large
spoon, making pancakes about 3 inches in diameter.
Do not allow the oil to smoke, and heat it up again
when you replenish the oil. Fry the underside of each
pancake until golden brown, then turn and brown
the other side. Remove when done. Drain on paper
towels. Keep warm in the oven or on a hot plate

Ending Homelessness
in our Community
Join Rabbi Glaser and the Temple Israel
Committee to End Homelessness
Wednesday, December 5, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Rabbi Glaser is serving as the chair of the Downtown
Congregations to End Homelessness, a group of 16
congregations (of which Temple is one) linked in our common
goal of eradicating homelessness in our cities.
The Temple Israel Committee to End Homelessness, led
by Rabbi Glaser, will meet to discuss, brainstorm and analyze
events that have occurred in recent weeks. Light snacks will
be provided. You will also have the opportunity to meet the
Director of the DCEH Heidi Johnson McAllister and get
updated on issues of homelessness in our region.

Nefesh Shabbat, meaning “Soul of Shabbat,” is a musical
service held the third Friday of each month. It is loved by
adults and children of all ages. It is the perfect service for
music lovers of all ages and for families whose children have
grown out of Tot Shabbat.

Madeline is the daughter of Jennifer
Kapel and Jason Kapel; granddaughter
of Micki & Mort Naiman, Mike Kapel,
Sharon & Bruce Carlson, and Barb & Jim
Bury; sister of Elliot. Maddy enjoys dance,
volleyball, acting, singing and playing
percussion. At Hopkins North Junior High
School her favorite subject is science.
She received an honorable mention
award for her participation in the
National History Day Contest. When
asked about her upcoming Bat Mitzvah,
Maddy said, “My Bat Mitzvah is my ticket
to being a Jewish adult, unlocking new
opportunities within the Jewish
community.”

fund for babysitting at Temple

Len and I started the Kellar Kennen
Child Care Fund because we wanted to
give back to Temple Israel.
Our daughter, Rachiel, went to
preschool, Religious School, Bat
Mitzvah, Confirmation and a trip to
Israel with the help of scholarships from
Temple Israel. It was our time to try and
return the generosity. Now that our
congregation is attracting so many
young families, we believe that
babysitting services will be a valuable
help to those who currently cannot
attend worship services or Temple
functions due to child care issues.
Currently babysitting is offered
periodically during Sunday programs.
Starting this month, it will also be
offered during the Nefesh Shabbat
service on the third Friday of each month
(see page 5 for details), and our hope is
that this new fund will eventually
provide the resources to expand
babysitting even further.
The Kellar Kennen Child Care Fund
is named in the memories of our parents,
Dorothy & Cletus Kellar and Irma &
Bernard Kennen. We are delighted to
support Temple and help young Temple
families in this way.

Clement of the Minnesota Religious Coalition for Reproductive
Choice (MRCRC) as we celebrate together the 40th anniversary
of Roe v. Wade (February 5, 2013).
Citizen Ruth is a 1996 satire that tells a story of a poor,
irresponsible and pregnant woman who unexpectedly attracts
attention from those involved in the debate about morality

Sisterhood will receive a rebate on cards that we order in
bulk. Cards are $7.00 (standard size) or $8.00 (large print).
Ask your Mah Jongg group to place an order through us and
help make this project a success.
To order your card(s), please send a check made payable to

type (standard or large print) and number of cards that you

Thank you to our Sisterhood, and all the women of Temple Israel whom
our Sisterhood proudly represents, for a generous gift of $10,000 for
programming and support in the 2012-2013 year. These funds will touch
our congregation in so many ways – from the youngest members, to
our students, our campers, and families experiencing hardship and need.
