My yard would look like a desert if it wasn`t for my sprinklers. And my water bill sure shows it. Lake Compounce held their Fathers Day car show which featured cars from CSRA, Unfortunately the only member to bring any cars was myself, Too bad, because it was a great day. We had a blast on the rides and the day went by so fast, they had to call us at 6pm to ask us to drive the cars out. Many people I spoke to during the day said they saw on social media that CSRA was having cars there so they went to see them, but were disappointed that there was only two. Lake Compounce was so impressed by the visitors taking selfies and overall enthusiasm that they may have another car show during the year. And my stepson Paul flying over taking pictures that they posted on their Facebook page was a big hit too. The CT Dragway reunion was an awesome show as usual. Well over 700 cars, great weather too. Our newest show Hot Rods 4 Heroes will on August 21th also at New Life Church. While the subject of New Life Church, Pastor Will`s Indy car had a great finish at the 500. Congrats go out to him and his team. Glen Reilly show at Silver City Raceway on August 14th . Don`t forget Cars & Coffee is the third Sunday of every month and a few Garage Nights too. Check with Greg or the newsletter for more info. Klingberg`s show had a full lot, only about three empty spaces before some started leaving. Many cars you just don`t see anywhere else. The Goodguys Rhinebeck was OK for a return to an old venue, but they did have some rain, good ‘ol Rainbeck. The Legislative session ended with nothing bad this time, but there’s always next year. More on DMV, or is it moron DMV, anyway they seem to have sent out tax bills from the wrong towns and are still having problems with their computers. Go figure That’s it for this time, See you at the meeting, John 5 pm 2 pm & PLACE Connecticut Dragway Reunion New Life Church Hot Rods 4 Hero’s New Life Church GET WELL Get well to Gerry Wilkos our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family! Rev. Will Marotti worked with Schmidt Peterson "When I started, I called the track first at Indianapolis and Motorsports to put Marotti Racing in the 100th running of IndyCar and told them what I wanted to do," Marotti said. the Indy 500. "They said, 'Listen, that's a great ambition, but understand Rev. Will Marotti formed Marotti Racing in 2015. His this. A thousand people a year like you call us saying they team's first race is the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 want to do this, and nothing ever takes place.' You're Marotti is the first active minister leading a race team at the driving at something here that's extremely difficult to find, Indy 500 but none of the teams really took us seriously." Be it on the radio, on television or in person, Rev. Will A pastor leading an Indy Car team does seem incredibly farMarotti hasn't missed an Indianapolis 500 since 1969. But fetched, but Marotti pressed on, calling every Indy Car team this year is very different. that was out there. In the 100th running of the race, he incredibly has the Finally, Sam Schmidt listened. Schmidt, a former driver chance to win it. who is now a quadriplegic, owns Schmidt Peterson In one of the unlikeliest stories of this year's Indy 500, there Motorsports. With Schmidt's mentoring and the help of will be "no pastor faster" than Marotti, who is the owner of sponsors to finance the investment, Marotti Racing was in Marotti Racing, founded in 2015. business. The Indy 500 will be Marotti Racing's debut. His nickname has stuck for obvious reasons, as Indianapolis "Our goal was pretty simple," Marotti said. "We wanted to Motor Speedway historian Donald Davidson has verified introduce the brand, which is Marotti Racing. We wanted to that there has never been an active minister leading a team establish a footprint at Indianapolis and really start looking to race at the Indy 500. to build for the future. Those goals have been met, and "It's curious, it's unique, but people have been very, very we're already looking at the future. We're excited to be here. accepting and very gracious," Marotti told CNN in a phone It's just a phenomenal opportunity." interview. "And yeah, there's a few jokes along the way, like 'Jesus take the wheel' and the 'faster pastor' thing, but it's been a great experience." Instead of buying a ticket and sitting with other fans, Marotti will be watching the race at the timing stand with the engineers and the strategists who are in radio communication with the team, soaking it all in. "I'm just here to learn," Marotti said. "I've been a fan my entire life. I know a lot about it because I've been a fan and I've been a very enthusiastic fan, but at this level, this is something I'm stepping into for the first time, so I am 100% a student." Lifelong love of racing Marotti, a senior pastor at the non-denominational New Life Church in Wallingford, Connecticut, said he fell in love with racing when he was a little boy, watching quarter midget racing at a local track with his father. A little more than a year ago, he started thinking about starting his own racing team. He knew it wouldn't be easy, and he knew it would be expensive, revealing that having one car for one month for the Indy 500 costs around $1 million. Oriol Servia at the wheel Marotti Racing has aligned with SPM to enter a car in this year's race. The No. 77 Honda will be manned by veteran driver Oriol Servia, who has been driving Indy cars since 2000 on mostly a part-time or substitute basis. This will be Servia's eighth Indy 500. He has finished as high as fourth, which came back in 2012 for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. CSRA A GROUP DEDICATED TO THE EDUCATION AND PRESERVATION OF OUR AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE 2015 NUTMEG MOTOR NEWS CSRA.ORG "He's a phenomenal driver," Marotti said of the 41-year-old. "I don't know why this is, but he just never landed with a long-term, good situation. This arguably will be the best situation he has ever been in, best team, best equipment." Servia, who qualified in the 10th position for Sunday, also will have some help from his teammates. SPM driver James Hinchcliffe -- in a nearly fatal crash last year at Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- earned the coveted pole position, meaning he starts first. Mikhail Aleshin will start in seventh. "To have all three cars in the top ten, no other team can say that," Hinchcliffe said after winning the pole. All of a sudden, Marotti's Indy 500 dream is turning out not to be a Hail Mary. He has a legitimate chance of winning on Sunday. And the thought alone of fulfilling a childhood dream makes the pastor emotional. "You're out on the basketball court," Marotti said, his voice quavering, "And in your mind, you're shooting for the last shot, and the buzzer goes off, and you let the ball go, and you swish it, and you win the championship, and you did it. Well, it's that same kind of feeling for me here in Indianapolis, having in my mind, visualized a thousand times, driving here and coming under the checkered flag first. "If we win on Sunday, the hardest thing for me is going to be trying to keep it together and act like a professional." S&S SPEEDWAY Jeff Barnes found that Tony Steward and Harvick were at the S&S Speedway in Pennsylvania the same time we were going to York, Dennis, Armand and I were thinking on stopping when we went to York, but for some reason we didn’t stop. Now that would have been fun to race with those guys. CSRA A GROUP DEDICATED TO THE EDUCATION AND PRESERVATION OF OUR AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE 2015 NUTMEG MOTOR NEWS CSRA.ORG THANK YOU NOTES Hi Members, I just wanted to thank you all for the delicious fruit basket. Billy Coleman Thank you, Johm Kozak Dear Connecticut Street Rod Association, I have ground up around cars and working on cars with my dad, but I was surprised when Mr. Zorzy told me I won an award. In my years in high school I learned and gained a lot of experience in the automotive field, thanks to Mr. Zorzy. This has driven me to have a love for cars. I plan to use this scholarship towards a technical training school, Universal Technical Institution. I plan to take automotive technology which includes in depth automotive training. I will be taking a Ford Fact Program to be a certified Ford Technician. Thank you very much for this honor. I appreciate you helping me to reach my gold. Sincerely John Kozak Haddam Killingworth High School MHRA Michigan Hot Rod Association Gentalmen, Just a note to say thanks. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in 'pints' and who was drinking in 'quarts,' hence the phrase 'minding your 'P's and Q's' CSRA A GROUP DEDICATED TO THE EDUCATION AND PRESERVATION OF OUR AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE 2015 NUTMEG MOTOR NEWS CSRA.ORG STUFF YOU DIDN'T KNOW! CARTILAGE IS ONE of the few tissues that grows throughout life. Between ages 30 and 70, a nose might grow a half of an inch, and the ears grow about a quarter of an inch. SUNLIGHT takes about 8 minutes & 20 seconds to reach the Earth at 186,282 miles/sec CSRA A GROUP DEDICATED TO THE EDUCATION AND PRESERVATION OF OUR AUTOMOTIVE HERITAGE 2015 NUTMEG MOTOR NEWS CSRA.ORG CNN NIGHT It was a beautiful night the weather was perfect we had over 700 vehicles and a lot of spectators. The crackle fest started at 7pm as one by one they started those big and small block engines up and the 50/50 had a good pot. The New Life Church took care of the food and drinks. Pastor Will who is a big hot rod fan wanted just one car to spin the tires, but because we don’t want that to get carried away believe it or not he was turned down by a few people, maybe because of the cops we had on stand-by, but later on we did hear two cars spin tires. FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE CLUBHOUSE Friday night went better than expected, we had over twenty people and after we ate hotdogs, hamburgers and we even had dessert most went out to either play bocce or instead watch them play. The red team had the better players, but the green team won all the games. Now what happen that morning to me should be in the “We Hears” part of the newsletter, but it was too long so I put it back here. I went to the clubhouse that morning at 8:30 to clean the bocce court that was loaded with weeds and didn’t finish until 12:30 so I then decided to cut the grass. After I finish cutting the lawn in back I noticed I lost my cell phone, after a lot of looking around I finally heard it beeping in the shed, after I had locked the shed and found my keys were in my truck and I had no phone to call for help because all the gates were locked and my only way out was to climb the fence. Well being a onetime ironwork and able to climb buildings, a somewhat high fence shouldn’t be a problem so I thought. I grab a chair and made my way to a table near the fence got up on the table put the chair over the fence, but it bounced away to where I couldn’t reach it. Now the fun begins I put my right leg over the fence and sat on the bar which I bowed just a little and when I tried putting my left leg over the dam fence that bowed way the hell over, which left me holding on with my arms and left ankle hook to the bar. If you were driving by on I-91 north bound you would have seen a 72 year old man hanging on to a bent fence for dear life. I tried reaching the ground with my right leg, but I couldn’t reach so I just unhooked my left leg and slam the ground. The good thing about this episode is nobody saw me, I hope!!!
