AGILITY – TRY SOMETHING NEW!
By Lois Apfel
Try something new with your Newf this spring or summer!
Go beyond a walk in the park, hike in the hills, or swim in the
ocean. Agility is a sport in which a dog runs through a timed
obstacle course under the guidance of the handler. Agility
training strengthens the bond between dog and handler and
provides fun and exercise for both. Agility builds confidence
in your dog and helps you build control, using tunnels, jumps,
teeter totters, dog walks and weave poles, to name a few.
Please turn to page 2.
The material contained herein is educational, informative and entertaining in nature. It is not intended to replace competent
veterinary care, nor does it necessarily reflect the opinions of the members or boards of the NCA or the NCSD.

Agility (continued from page 1)
It gives your dog a chance to socialize with
other dogs and play with YOU. Many people
do this just for fun; others go on to compete.
Many of us who are involved in agility have
worked hard to make it a friendlier sport for
the large breeds. Lower jump heights,
longer standard course times (SCT), and
new classes are some of the changes that
have been implemented.
AKC is also involved in the growing sport of
agility. The AKC agility regulations were
recently amended. Effective Sept. 1, 2002,
the AKC will offer a “preferred class.” All
dogs over 22 inches at the withers will jump
20 inches, 4 inches lower, and an additional
five seconds will be added to the SCT.
The American Kennel Club (AKC), North
American Dog Agility Club (NADAC), and
United States Dog Agility Association
(USDAA) are three of the organizations that
regulate agility and offer trials towards
various titles.
USDAA was organized in 1986 to promote
international standards as developed in
Great Britain, which has become the basis
for the world standard in dog agility. USDAA
has become the leading agility organization
in the United States and North America,
maintaining communications with the sport’s
leading authorities in England and around
the world. Dogs measuring 21 inches at the
withers jump 26 inches in the championship program and 22 inches in the performance program. The Agility Club of San
Diego will host a USDAA trial on June 1–2,
2002 at Rohr Park in Chula Vista.
NADAC was formed in 1993 to provide
North American dogs and their handlers a
fast, safe and enjoyable form of the sport of
dog agility. NADAC sanctions agility trials
sponsored by affiliated clubs. NADAC uses
the most flowing courses for big dogs, but
the SCTs are shorter. They previously used
a breed exemption to lower jump heights to
20 inches for our big dogs, but have now
instituted a 20+ class which is open to any
dog who would have been required to jump
24 inches. The veterans’ class is for dogs
seven years old and over and/or handlers
over 60 years old. The SCT is also longer
in the veterans’ class. For example, Lyric,
my 2-year-old Newf, qualifies for the 20+
class and, as her handler, my age qualifies
us for the veterans’ class. Now, she is only
required to jump 16 inches.

Lyric jumps with ease as she sights the next obstacle.
All three organizations offer articles, links,
and agility information on their respective
Web sites.
We have two agility clubs in San Diego. The
Agility Club of San Diego trains in East County
at the Canine Sports Center in Dehesa. For
information, call the club hotline at (619)
685-7070. Ups ‘N Downs Agility is based in
North San Diego County, and most of the club
activities are run out of the DogPatch DogSports Park, in San Marcos. Ups ‘N Downs
offers many activities and training opportunities year round. They offer training classes
at all levels and hold seminars, fun matches,
game days and trials. The Web site address is:
http://members.aol.com/udacweb.
You can reach the training director, Judy Fahy,
at (760) 747-6674.
There are also many private agility trainers.
If you are interested and need more information, please feel free to contact me privately.

President’s Column
NewfWaves
By Sandra Younger
Fellow Newf Lovers,
Summer? Already? Seems impossible, but we’re almost there, and to me that means one thing.
As my daughter Lauren put it years ago on her way to toddler swimming lessons: “Oh boy, the
water!” I hope you’ll brave the June gloom and join Terra and me at the beach as we resume the
quest for those coveted NCA water titles. It’s none too soon to start working toward NCSD’s
annual water test coming up Sunday, Sept. 22. In the meantime, check the calendar for details
on this month’s Cabrillo and Del Sur shows, a wine tasting in June to benefit Newf Rescue and
our second annual Bastille Day beach barbeque in July.
It’s also time for our annual board elections and membership renewals. (Please look for your
ballot and renewal form enclosed.) My thanks to this year’s nominating committee, Joe
Wucherer, Gina Anderson and Esther Hofer, who presented a wonderful slate of able NCSD
members to lead us in 2002-2003. And hearty thanks to our incoming officers and directors for
their willingness to serve. Your new administration will take office following our July meeting.
Before I step down as NCSD president, however, I still have an important goal to accomplish. I’d
like to ensure a firm financial footing for our club. Just like your family, your business and other
organizations you support, NCSD incurs regular expenses. Each year, we sponsor a number of
events, including regional specialties, water tests and draft tests. We publish NewfWaves and
participate in Newf Rescue. We carry insurance and maintain an inventory of equipment. All
tolled, these activities cost between $6,000 and $7,000 per year.
Your board members are wonderful stewards of club funds, and our terrific treasurer, Joe
Wucherer, watches over every penny. So there’s no pork in the budget. Just the basic costs of
doing business. The problem is we don’t have enough guaranteed annual revenue to cover
those expenses. To date, we’ve relied on membership dues, event fees and an occasional raffle
or garage sale. But, to be honest, it’s always a struggle to make ends meet.
Most nonprofit organizations schedule a major fund-raising event or two during the year to replenish the budget, and the board has explored a number of similar options. But they all would
require more effort than our small core of active members could reasonably tackle on top of our
existing calendar of events.
So the board has adopted a different idea, an approach that works for hundreds of other nonprofit organizations. We’re looking for NCSD members willing to take a further step in supporting
the work of our club. We’re asking you to consider donating an additional amount beyond your
dues to help fund NCSD for 2002-2003.
Let me be clear: Dues have not gone up; you don’t need to give a cent more to retain the full
benefits of NCSD membership. But if you’re financially able to make an extra gift, and you’d like
to do more for Newfs in this way, please do. Gifts to NCSD are not tax deductible, so your only
tangible return on investment will be the love and kisses of our furry friends. Still, I’m guessing
that’s a powerful incentive.
We’re calling this new donor program “Newfunds”. (New funds/Newf funds …. get it?) Here’s
how it works. Dues are $1 for juniors, $25 for single membership and $30 for joint membership.
If you write a bigger check, we’ll recognize your generosity to NCSD with designations keyed to
your level of giving.
A check for $50 will qualify you as a CGC; that’s Charitable Good Citizen. At $100, you’ll earn a CD
or Companion Donor title. At $150, you’ll receive your CDX—Companion Donor Excellent. Finally,
those who send $250 or more will receive the prestigious VN or Versatile Newfunder designation.
Please respond if you can. Together, we can do more for our beloved Newfoundlands.
It’s about the dogs,

A sunny spring day, brunch at the Champagne French Bakery, and a walk on Del Mar beach with our Newfs. Paradise!
Spring Break for NCSD Newfs
by Gina Anderson
Sunday, April 7, was a great day for Newfs
on the beach in Del Mar. The weather was
balmy, and the sun broke through around
noontime. Eighteen humans and 13 dogs
met at the Champagne French Bakery for
morning lattes and baguettes. With 13
Newfs lounging on the grass next to the
patio, our group drew considerable interest.
We visited on the bakery’s lawn and patio before the walk.
4
The usual questions came from the other
customers – What type of dog is that? How
much does he weigh? How much does she
eat? How big will that puppy get?
We had a leisurely walk to the beach, crossing the railroad tracks and passing through
Powerhouse Park. Cars stopped, and people
craned their heads to watch our group. Once
on the beach, some Newfs (and some hesitant owners on leashes) plowed into the surf.
Nancy got soaked when Onslow pulled her into the surf.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Larry Anderson and Carbon, frequent Del
Mar beach goers, both experienced the wave
action. Six-month-old Nimitz, true to her
ocean-going name, followed Carbon right
into the water with owner Nicole Alcorn in
tow. Esther Hofer handed Molly to Gina, and
they both romped a bit. Onslow gave Nancy
Wolf surfing lessons as Eric watched the show.
As we walked into the off-leash area, we met
Moby Dick and Mary Milton. Here, many of
the dogs were set free to roam and get
acquainted with the canine locals. Dori
McLauren and Applejack were accompanied
by Dori’s friend Victoria Molina. Sandra
Younger walked with Terra, Katie Jacobsen
was with Angus, John Gerard brought Lacy,
and Denise Jones strolled with Dooley. Jose
Magsaysay, camera in hand, recorded some
of the day’s events.

New member Shirley McClelland joined us
for brunch at the bakery. Dave and Adele
Ennis, with Casey, also joined us, but waited
at the bakery anticipating the arrival of longlost friends, Don Fife and Sue Kocsis. We
met Don and Sue wandering on the beach
with two of their four Newfs, and we directed
them to the bakery. It had been 40 years
since Don and Sue had seen Dave and Adele!
After a couple of hours, it was time to take
our wet pups home to rinse off the salt
water and sand. It had been a fun day.

Party With Us
to Benefit Newf Rescue!
You can help with the important job of Newf rescue! Come to the
party on Sunday, June 9 from 2–5 p.m. and bring some friends. All
proceeds from this event will go to pay for the medical expenses and
other fees involved in rescuing abused or neglected Newfs. The
suggested donations are $20 each or $35 for two people.
Pam Morgan and Joyce Rowland have graciously opened their classic, award-winning Craftsman
style home in Rancho Santa Fe for the afternoon. They are contributing all the food and
refreshments for this cause. The address is 5402 Las Palomas in Rancho Santa Fe, just off
Via de la Valle, east of the polo grounds.
Each year the San Diego
and Southern California
Newfoundland clubs
rescue an average of 8
dogs. These Newfies are
given appropriate medical attention and then
placed in caring homes.
Sharon Gilbert, NCSD
rescue chair, recently
placed Shadow, an 8 year-old Newf. Shadow
needed expensive ear
surgery and had to spend
a few days at the vet
before his adoption.
Please join us if you can
possibly schedule it.
Plan on a most pleasant
afternoon with all the
other dog lovers. This is
an event which deserves
your support.

Julie Named First Select at Nationals!
With some 650 Newfs entered at the NCA National Specialty held April 22-27 at the Clarion
Hotel and Convention Center in Carlisle, Pennsulvania, just to be mentioned is quite an
achievement. NCSD’s own Julie, Ch. Seabrook’s Juliette of Poohbear, was named First Select
Bitch with a corresponding Award of Merit. Pamela Morgan and Joyce Rowland are very proud
of their girl, who is also a first rate mom. Julie’s son, Ch. Seabrook’s Earl of Summerford
was named Winners Dog at the National, and
Julie’s grand-daughters Seabrook Will She
Pouchcove and Seabrook Pleads the Fifth
were class winners in the 6-9 month and 9-12
month puppy bitch classes, respectively.
Julie has been racking up the points recently.
She won as best in the working group (Group 1)
on March 29 at the Sequoia Kennel Club show
in Bakersfield. On April 7 she captured Group
4 at the Yosemite Kennel Club show, and on
April 14 she again took Group 4 at the Sacramento Kennel Club show.
NCSD congratulates Julie for her achievements as a successful show dog, a great mom
and a beloved pet.
Lyric Gains NAC-V Title
Lyric finished her NAC-V (Novice Agility Certificate-Veterans) on Sunday, April 21, with two
clean runs and first places under judge Anne Platt. She also achieved one leg toward her
Novice Gamblers Certificate-Veterans (NGC-V) on Saturday, April 20, with a first place under
judge Anne Platt. This was at the North American Dog Agility Trial at Rohr Park in Chula Vista.
Lois Apfel
Lois Apfel Wins the Carr Old Timers’ Award
I would like to thank Claire Carr and NCSD for the Old Timers’ award I recently received. Five
of us who had previously earned working titles with our Newfs obtained new working titles
during 2001: Kathy Mitchell and Becca (WD), Mary Killian and Delight (WD), Debby Rothwell
and Sloane (WRD, CD, DD), Nina Roben and Vicki (WD) and myself and Lyric (WD). Our names
were placed in a drawing to determine which “old timer” would win and, lucky me, I received
the award—one of Claire’s beautiful Newfy drawings. I was so pleased to see that Claire
selected the Newf puppy playing with the crab at the edge of the water. Then I learned the
history of this picture that Claire originally drew in the 70s. She created the drawing by
combining two pictures given to her by Lyric’s breeder. This makes it even more special.
Again, thank you to Claire and the club.
I was disappointed, however, to learn that none of our members met the Carr Challenge,
earning their first working title with a Newf. What can we do to assist these people who may
want to get started in working or other activities? Any ideas? Could we get an older member
to mentor a newer one towards a title? I know of one person who almost achieved a water
title last year. I’m hoping he will come through with shining colors this year. There are so
many things we can do with our Newfs; let’s help some of our newer members get started!

Call to order
President Sandra Younger called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Board members in attendance were Sandra Younger,
Dori McLaurin, Joe Wucherer, Denise Jones, Nancy Wolf, Larry Anderson, and John Gerard. Committee chairs Gina
Anderson and Sharon Gilbert were also present.
II.
Minutes
Board minutes of the January 19, 2002 meeting were read and accepted.
III.
IV.
Secretary’s Report – None.
Treasurer’s Report
Joe Wucherer reported a balance of $3,859.24. After the remaining specialty expenses, we should have a balance of
approximately $4,000.00. Joe will provide a final specialty report.
V.
Committee Reports
Conformation: The regional specialty turned out very well with an entry of 58, which was not a significant drop. Our
highest entry was around 70 dogs. There were no significant problems and we were given a prime ring location and show
times both days. Thank you to Joe, Denise, Nancy and Dori and all other who helped make it a success.
Membership: No report.
NewfWaves: The next issue is in progress.
Programs: We talked about a possible wine tasting in May/June 2002 at Pam Morgan and Joyce Rowland’s home in Rancho
Santa Fe. Pam would like it to be a fundraiser for rescue. We discussed inviting NCSC members and having a silent auction.
Rescue: Sharon reported she has been busy. Recently, one Newf has come in and one has been placed. She asked about
going to a seminar by Sue Miles. The club will sponsor her $35.00 fee. Sharon is becoming a puppy referral source and a
web site would be helpful.
Ways & Means: Nancy reported Kymuthy Schultze is coming to San Diego in April if we still want to consider doing a
natural nutrition seminar. The board decided we don’t have enough time to market the seminar and are concerned about the
profitability. We still may consider this idea later in the year.
Working : No report.
VI.
Unfinished Business/New Business
Upcoming events: Second annual Bastille Day/beach bonfire on Sunday, July 14. We planned a beach walk in Del Mar for
Sunday, April 7. We’ll meet at 10:00 a.m. for coffee and pastries at the Champagne Bakery by L’Auberge.
Calendar upcoming events. Second annual Bastille Day/Beach Bonfire on July 14. Beach Walk in Del Mar on April 7.
We need to look at tides for the September water test.
We talked briefly about web site. We’ll put it on hold for now.
Membership renewals are mailed in May. Sandra talked again about varying levels of membership/ donations.
There were no qualifiers for the Carr Challenge. Five members received working titles and qualified for the old-timers’
award, an original Carr print. We did a drawing with their names and Lois Apfel was chosen.
We discussed water training and a casual group plan. Need to form the water test committee with co-chairs, choose our
judges, and confirm a date.
National Specialty raffle tickets are for sale. The club will purchase 24 tickets/$100.00 toward the water test kit. If we
win, we will use it for a future club event.
The nominations slate is complete: President, JoAnn Wucherer; Vice President, Steve Barkas; Secretary, Gina Anderson;
Treasurer, Joe Wucherer; Historian, Kathy Garcia; Members at Large, Sandra Younger and Denise Jones.
We discussed our constitution and by-laws changes. NCSC constitution changes were approved by NCA. Sandra distributed
copies with highlighted portions indicating proposed changes or additions. We reviewed , and everyone will take home copy
for additional review and comment. We will approve changes at the next board meeting and distribute to membership.
We will keep the membership dues the same for next term. Motion passed to have Sandra write up an invitation for donations and we will send out with the membership renewal forms.
Our next board meeting will be Tuesday, May 7, 6:15 p.m. at Andiamo! Ristorante.
VII.
Adjournment: Sandra adjourned the meeting at 9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
