2013 Treasures of the Heart Auction
A special thank you to the Auction
Chairs, Matt and Ann Mudd Salamon
’84, Mike and Chris Galli Walter ’84
and co-chairs Tony and Melodie Nicastro. It is because of their leadership,
energy, generosity, along with all our
volunteers, that the auction was exceptionally successful. Once again, the bar
was raised! We exceeded the net profit
in 2012, bringing in $433,000! The
Fund-a-Need raised $181,000, which
will assist in the master plans of expanding CJ’s campus. What a remarkable
show of support for CJ’s students!
We would like to thank our guests in
attendance for an exceptional evening.
We are humbled by the generosity of
so many and are blessed to be part of a
community that supports Cor Jesu so
enthusiastically. The success of our
Sr. Barbara Thomas with auction chairs Ann and Matt Salamon, Chris and Mike Walter, and auction
co-chairs Melodie and Tony Nicastro.
auction is due to the time, energy and
talent of our parents. From chairing
committees, entering items for the catalog,
picking up donations, helping with
mailings, handling reservations, delivering
catalogs, hospitality for all the volunteers
and security; we depend on your help and
support. The Fathers’ Club volunteers, who
set up the booths the week before and
took them down the day after, did an
outstanding job. It is our pleasure to
work so closely with each of you in the
CJ community. Thank you for helping
to make the 2013 Treasures of the Heart
an event to remember!

Senior Parents’ Annual Fund Giving
Helps Pave the Way to Success
This time of year,
most senior parents
with whom I talk
express disbelief at
how quickly their
daughters’ four
years at Cor Jesu
have gone. It seems
Sr. Barbara Thomas,
ascj
they were just getting them ready for the adjustment to
high school, and now it’s almost time
for them to graduate. With that in
mind, this month I am directing my
words primarily to our senior parents,
but I invite you all to read and consider
them, for — as senior parents remind
me each year — you will be there before
you know it!
As you have probably noticed on one of
your trips into our tower entrance, we
have a meaningful tradition for commemorating your daughter’s place in the
history of Cor Jesu. Each senior family
is offered the opportunity to purchase
a brick with your graduating daughter’s
name and year of graduation etched on
it. The names of our participating alumnae, from 1960 through 2012, remind
us as we enter and exit the building, that
Cor Jesu is much larger than the students
and faculty who walk the halls in any one
year. Rather, we are a family, made up
of generations of women learning and
living the charism of the Apostles of the
Sacred Heart and sharing the love of the
heart of Christ with the world.
As you consider this gift option for your
daughter, know that your donation is
tax-deductible and that you are supporting the present and future of Cor Jesu
Academy as part of the Annual Fund.

Conferences
Students Make Cor Jesu Proud with
Science Fair Achievements
THURSDAY, MARCH 7, 2013
3-8 PM, CAFE/LIBRARY
Please check your daughter’s grades online
BEFORE the conferences so that you
know which teachers you would like to
meet with.
Independent Science Research students with Dr. Bill Joern
Congratulations to the following Independent Science Research students, who
earned honors at the Greater St. Louis
Science Fair.
Allison Gmelich ’13 was named a
Finalist at the Academy of ScienceSt. Louis Science Fair Honors Division.
The Honors Division is designed for
high school students, who have performed college-level research.
Allison’s project, Genetic Selection for
Glucosinolates in Brassica Rapa, was
awarded a $1,000 scholarship and an
invitation to bring her project back to
compete for special awards in May.
In addition, eight Cor Jesu students
were named Semifinalists:
Kelsey Keady ’14, Detection and Quantification of 4-Methylimidazole in Colas;
Ellen Komlos ’13, The Effects of Soap,
Time and Temperature on Hand Washing Efficiency; Sarah Maciorowski ’14,
Mental/Physical Effects of Energy Drinks
Related to Caffeine Concentration;
Cassidy Manns ’13, Melamine Analysis:
Pet Foods; Claire Mullaney ’13, Heavy
Metals in the New Lead Belt; Nicole
Quinlivan ’14, Characterization and
Studies of Enzymes and Enzyme Inhibitors; Kate Walter ’13, Enzyme Inhibition; and Tess Wemhoener ’13, Effect
of Circadian Rhythms and Stress upon
Student Performance.
Because of the large number of students taking the Independent Science
Research course at Cor Jesu this year,
class instructor Bill Joern, Ph.D. asked
St. Louis area scientists to serve as
mentors to help the students with their
respective projects. Four of the mentors
— Dr. Travis Frey, Dr. Michael Malone,
Bryan Witherbee and Dr. Stephen
Duff — work at Monsanto. And the
other four mentors — all of whom
are CJ alumnae, Karen Jansen Regina,
Carolyn Hilliard, Lauren Goeddel, and
Dr. Sarah VanVickle-Chavez — either
work at or attend graduate school at
Washington University.
“The activity that makes students ‘fall in
love’ with science,” stated Dr. Joern, “is
the process of discovering new knowledge. This allows them to use their
abilities to create something unique,
and they become very proud of their
accomplishments. They gain a great
deal of confidence and satisfaction.”
Cor Jesu students have consistently
earned high rankings in the Academy of
Science – St. Louis Science Fair Honors
Division throughout the years.

Each year, CJ’s Student Council hosts Penny Queen Week — a week filled with
fund-raising activities, including special dinners, trivia nights, dodgeball tournaments
and more, all to raise thousands of dollars for charity. And this year was no exception!
From February 8-15, CJ students coordinated a vast array of events and sales to help
the following organizations and causes: Care for Kali, Christopher’s Miracle Journey,
Fostering Faithful Families/One Heart Family Ministries, Lorlei Hoagland, as well as
the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus’ mission in Benin, Africa; Cor Jesu’s Endowment Fund and the CJA Appalachia Trip. Each cause will receive 15 percent of the
total, with the CJ Endowment Fund receiving 10 percent.
StuCo would like to thank all the class chairpersons and moderators for their preparation and hard work to make the week such a success. The grand total raised was
$28,000, and seniors Emily Ainsley, Ellen Boll and Melanie Hosty took home the
Penny Queen title. An assembly will be held on Friday, March 8 for representatives
from each of the charities to receive their donations.
Penny Queen 2013 was a week to remember!
The senior PQ team of Ellen Boll, Melanie Hosty and
Emily Ainsley was named the 2013 Penny Queens.

Celebrate Mother Clelia’s Birthday with Us!
Please join us on Thursday, March 7, at 8:10 a.m. in the gym, when we will celebrate the birthday of our foundress, Mother Clelia,
by remembering the Centennial of the arrival of our Sisters, the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in St. Louis. One hundred years
ago, a group of five Sisters came to teach and serve the local Italian immigrants. To commemorate that event, Cor Jesu will present an
interactive dramatic and visual arts celebration titled, In Her Shoes. This multimedia presentation will bring the story that began 100
years ago to life through the voices of Cor Jesu students and friends.
Biology Students
Experiment
with DNA
Parents Corner
Fathers’ Club News…
As we reach the final months of the
2012-13 school year, there are several
events and service opportunities on the
Cor Jesu Father’s Club schedule:
Father/Daughter Trivia Night
March 3 at 5 p.m. in the café
As part of their genetic unit, these
freshmen Biology students explored
topics in genetic engineering, including DNA fingerprinting, cloning,
PCR, and gel electrophoresis. The
students performed a forensics
analysis to determine the perpetrator
of a crime. The DNA samples were
separated by gel electrophoresis, and
the bands were examined to solve
the crime. Everyone enjoyed an evening matching wits with other CJ students and
their dads. Trivia Night has become an
annual tradition at CJ and yet another
opportunity for dads and daughters to
spend time together. There were plenty
of prizes for winners and attendees.
Fix-it Night Cancelled
March 5 at 6:30 p.m.
Fix-it Night on Tuesday, March 5 has
been cancelled due to a lack of projects
for dads to tackle. Thanks to all who
had planned on joining us!
Fathers’ Club General Meeting/
NCAA Basketball Finals
April 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the café
Plan to join CJ dads for our second and
final general meeting of the school year.
Our committee chair, Dave Gmelich
(Allison ’13), has plans for a fun night
of friendly wagering (squares), as well
as plenty of food and beverages. We’ll
briefly discuss CJFC business, then
watch the big game! Café doors open

at 6:00 p.m. Please RSVP to fathersclub@corjesu.org.
Service & Recognition
Just a few updates on CJFC service
efforts. We have purchased two new
coolers for school events, replacing
older coolers that were in disrepair. Our
service chair, Jim Lewis (Emily ’13,
Caroline ’16), is working with Cor Jesu
on the placement of two flagpoles in
front of the building facing Gravois Rd.
Finally, the CJFC is donating a plaque,
honoring the memory of Tom Breitenstein, who led efforts that reinvigorated
the Fathers’ Club several years ago. We
honor Tom at the Father/Daughter
Dinner Dance each year by presenting
the “Tom Breitenstein Award” to the CJ
dad, who best exemplifies Tom’s selfless
dedication to Cor Jesu. This year’s recipient was Leo Anglo (Claire ’13, Lauren
’16). The award will be on display at
school by the end of March.
As you can see, the CFJC continues
to focus our efforts on creating lasting
memories for dads and their daughters,
providing service to CJ as well as fellowship opportunities for our membership.
Please plan to join us!

Two Sophomores Compete in National History Day Competition
On February 23, Dr. Kevin Knickman and Ms. Megan Burian accompanied two World Studies students, Tess Martin ’15 and
Sawyer Judge ’15, to the regional National History Day competition at UM-St. Louis. They represented Cor Jesu well, as Tess
entered an excellent and well-researched documentary on desegregation in St. Louis, and Sawyer entered an outstanding historical
paper on the Oxford English Dictionary. Both girls did a wonderful job defending their research to judges, and Sawyer made the
run-off judging, eventually taking first place in the senior historical paper category for the St. Louis region. Sawyer has now earned
a position in the Missouri State National History Day Competition in Columbia on April 20. If she wins there, she will proceed to
Washington, D.C., for the national competition in June.

Basketball
Racquetball
The youth-filled roster for the varsity
basketball team has shown their maturity
through the second half of the season.
Currently 20-8, some gritty performances in the final stretch of the season
prepared them for a District Championship. A last second three-point shot by
senior Chaley Poth gave the team a
come-from-behind overtime victory over
Belleville East in the 2nd round game of
the Webster Groves Winter Challenge
and defeated Fort Zumwalt West in the
consolation finals. The team had another
come-from-behind victory against Nerinx in the “Paint it Pink” game on February 14. Down 25-13 at the half, the
Chargers mounted a comeback to defeat
the Markers 48-44. The JV has continued their dominance through the season
with a record of 21-4. They finished 1st
in the St. Charles Tournament and 2nd in
the Nerinx Hall Tournament.
The Racquetball Team captured their
3rd consecutive State Championship this
season. The team went on to finish 2nd
to a team from Oregon in the National
Tournament hosted in St. Louis. The
team’s repeated success of the past
several years has much to do with its
outstanding coaching. Cor Jesu’s coach,
Dan Whitley, was selected to receive
the award for “United States Olympic
Committee Developmental National
Racquetball Coach of the Year.”
Swimming
This year, five senior athletes represented
Cor Jesu at the annual Skippy Keefer
Banquet. Molly Burke, Kathleen Golterman, Alena Hegger, Allison Jedlicka
and Caitlyn Slattery were nominated
for this prestigious award for having
shown outstanding sportsmanship while
playing two sports during their high
school career. They were honored at a
banquet hosted by the MWAA Conference on February 5.
The swim team wrapped up their season
with an outstanding performance at the
MWAA meet in early February. They
finished 2nd as a team and qualified
for the State Championships in three
individual events and two relays. Molly
Burke ’13, who qualified in back stroke,
and Elaine Mahon ’14, who qualified
in the 100 and 50 free, joined Sophia
Cygnarowicz ’14, who qualified earlier
in the season in the 50 free.
The team also qualified in
the medley relay and the
200 free relay.
Spring Sports
Tryouts began for spring sports during
the week of February 25. Soccer and
lacrosse have their first home games on
March 27. The track and field team will
begin their season at Washington University on March 23.

Cor Jesu students met with Rep. Ann Trousdale Wagner ’80, CJ’s first graduate to serve in Congress.
Washington memorials, museums, and politicians — including CJ’s first graduate to
serve in Congress Ann Trousdale Wagner ’80 — highlighted this year’s CJ participation in the Close Up Foundation’s annual programs from February 3-8, 2013.
Dr. Brian Hohlt accompanied 17 CJ students, who participated in programs
immersing them in discussions and debates with young people from California,
Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Hawaii, Ohio, and Missouri, and received
behind-the-scenes Washington access. As their week progressed the girls had coffee
and doughnuts with Senator Roy Blunt, toured the Pentagon and the White House,
and met with Representative Ann Trousdale Wagner ’80. Rep. Wagner spent more
than an hour with the CJ crew and some visiting Vianney students, explaining to
them how her CJ values have guided her through her career, giving them a tour of
her office, and exhorting them to keep pushing to fulfill their dreams and serve their
communities. The assembled girls, who presented Rep. Wagner with gifts from the
CJ administration as part of their D.C. activities, included seniors Nikki Carenza,
Ali Fossell, Emma Gambaro, Allison Gmelich, Theresa Jabouri, Emily Karcher,
Emily Koehler, Ellen Komlos, Maggie McDonagh, Christina Moellenhoff, Claire
Mullaney, Caroline Parker, Christina Sinak, and Kristen Wacker, and sophomores
Maureen Holley, Sawyer Judge, and Hannah Randolph.
Representative Wagner also joined Cor Jesu graduates living in or near the District
of Columbia, who gathered for a third consecutive D.C.-area alumnae reception.
Dr. Hohlt met the group at Old Ebbitt Grill, a Washington restaurant in operation
since 1856, and helped to catch the alums up on events like the Auction Fund-aNeed, the updated library, the whereabouts of their favorite teachers, and other
Cor Jesu news. Those in attendance included Mary Grace Springer Hartley ’78,
Ann Trousdale Wagner, Elisa Kunz ’89, Jennifer Schwartz Goehring ’97, Meghan
Clodius ’01, Kalen Furrer ’01, Jennifer Ramacciotti ’03, Jamie Ramacciotti ’06,
Molly Sinks ’06, Maureen Hogan ’03, Amelia Schmidt ’03, Kelly Hoffman ’05 and
Priya Menzies ’05.

2013 March for Life Trip
By Margaret Banahan ’13
On January 25, 125 Cor Jesu students
and chaperones marched for life in
Washington, D.C. Despite frigid temperatures and falling snow, 500,000
people showed up to march and speak
out for the unborn. After the march,
we got the chance to meet Rep. Ann
Trousdale Wagner ’80, a Cor Jesu grad
and a member of the US Congress. She
gave us a tour of her office inside the

one-of-a-kind experience. She is a great
example of using the gifts Cor Jesu gives to its students and incorporating them into the
betterment of society. It was truly an honor and a privilege to meet her and see a CJ woman
making her mark on the world. The overwhelming excitement of being able to participate
in something truly wonderful and important for the protection of our unborn brothers and
sisters was a perfect way to live the love of the heart of Christ. The Missouri State High School

Cor Jesu Retreat Program
“I will lead her into the desert and speak

An important part of every CJ student’s
year is the time spent developing a
closer faith relationship with Christ and
her classmates. The remaining retreat
opportunities for this year are:
“Repent, and believe in the Gospel!”
(From the Ash Wednesday liturgy)
More than two dozen priests of the
Archdiocese gathered on February 27 to
offer the sacrament of reconciliation as a
special annual Lenten observance.

Respect Life Committee members on
March 24 at 9 a.m. in front of Planned
Parenthood on Lindell as part of the
40 Days for Life Campaign. The event
begins by coming together as a community on the sidewalk to pray for all
the women injured by abortions and for
the lives lost. The hour of prayer will be
followed by attending the 10:00 Mass
at the Cathedral Basilica, a one-block
walk away.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
On February 23, more than half the sophomore
class served from the heart at many locations
across the St. Louis area. Here, a sophomore plays
bingo with senior citizens at Cardinal Carberry
Senior Living Center.
Lent came early this year!
We are “Chargers on fire for Christ”
Inspiration to make this special time in the
church year a deeply meaningful season
comes from many sources:
• Th
e Scriptures of Lent, “Your faith is
more precious than fire-tried gold.”
1 Peter 1:7
• “ If you are who you say you are, you will
set the world on fire.” Catherine of Siena
• “ Carry the torch of divine love wherever
you go.” Mother Clelia Merloni
• H
unger Games’ Katniss and her
passion to choose life and love as the
“Girl on Fire.”
Please keep in your prayers the 57
students, parents and faculty who are
members of the Mission Appalachia
2013 team. They will spend their Spring
Break, March 10-15, working with the
organization ASP (Appalachian Service
Project) to make homes warmer, safer
and dryer for families in the region of
Chavies, Kentucky.
