This month I wanted to address a concern some have raised about the new electronic 'on line' newsletter. NO NO NO . . . . . . . WE ARE NOT...going to get rid of the printed newsletter. There are no plans to discontinue the printed version of the Breakdown. The electronic version is growing in popularity, but many of us still want to hold our reading materials in our hands. However, the new version does allow you to print your own copy in color and save money by becoming a E-Member. Although this isn't for everybody we hope you understand this saves on operating cost for SEBA and gives everyone some options. This month there are so many events included, we hope you find the ones that give you the most enjoyment. Try some of the events you have not attended before and let us know how it was. We depend on you reporting your experiences so we can share them with everyone. So, as Louisa Branscome says “keep your pen handy.....” and write us. Hope to hear from you soon.... Macon Ga, Members of the Middle Georgia Bluegrass Association (MBGA) have been in discussions with SEBA about becoming an affiliate SEBA chapter like SEBA Elijay's “North Georgia Bluegrass”. Many of them will see this edition of the Breakdown. Welcome! With that in mind we thought it appropriate to report to you and the whole bluegrass community the policies, practices and requirements for forming a SEBA chapter. First and foremost there are music communities almost everywhere. Some are organized and some are not. Wherever folks gather to enjoy or want to gather to enjoy bluegrass, SEBA stands ready to help them. After 27 years we have learned a thing or two about having a good time with our friends who love bluegrass. The ability to communicate your community message to the public can be Middle Georgia Bluegrass Assn. These folks have FUN! a daunting and challenging task, but SEBA has developed tools and strategies to help. Thousands of dollars have been invested in our integrated data bases in order to provide extended lines of communication and services to not only our members, but the public too. And you don't even have to be a member of SEBA to take advantage of some of our services. To be chartered as a SEBA chapter only requires two or three active members willing to take a leadership role in their community. The chapter only needs to meet once a month and have a short business/discussion meeting and then, just HAVE FUN. No two SEBA chapters are alike. Some chapters just have a picking party once a month, while other have jams, a stage shows, food and fundraiser activities. One SEBA chapter has a program every week, along with food and a nearly packed house every time they meet. A SEBA chapter can be what ever it wants to be. Supporting SEBA through membership is encouraged, we would like to earn that support. You don't have to join SEBA or change what you do as a group. However, one thing is for certain, the more SEBA chapters there are, the more opportunities everyone has to enjoy the music we all love. Just ask some of those folks that go to more than one of SEBA's monthly meetings. Everyone is welcomed at SEBA regardless of membership! To learn more call one of our chapters or visit the website at SEBAbluegrass.org Dahlonega Chapter Hooks a “BIG ONE” Bobber's Fish House By popular request, all future chapter meetings and jams will take place at Bobber's Fish House where we have been meeting for the past two months. We had been scheduled to move to the United Community Bank on Morrison Moore Parkway in March. We met with Larry Odom, President of the Dahlonega branch, and explained the availability of Bobber's and the amenities it provides, as well as the request from many of those who have attended the January and February jams that we continue meeting at Bobber's. He has graciously suggested that we keep the bank in mind as a back-up location should we need one in the future. If you know Larry Odom, thank him for his generosity in offering us the free use of the bank's community room. If you do not know him, make it a point to send him a note or call the bank just to say we appreciate his support. Also, say thank you when you see Will and Jenny Dobrydnia for making our SEBA jams welcome in their Bobber's Fish House Restaurant. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial association. Sunnyside Church of God was the scene, where dozens of family friends and fans converged to celebrate a marriage seven years in the making, One could not help but notice the music coming from the sanctuary. Sounding like a professional recording 'piped” through the sound system, it was soon evident, this was live music. As the crowd waited to witness the neptuals, there stood three familiar talented musicians Brad Oviatt, Jeff Wright and Josh Holifield. Longtime sweethearts and friends Tristan Weeks and Jared Tuttle committed their lives to each other in a ceremony that had a simple country charm befitting their rural roots. Both musicians and people of deep faith from families who instilled those L to R Brad Oviatt, Jeff Wright values in each, it is safe to say the and Josh Holifield. future looks bright for the lovebirds. As many of you know, Tristanis a regular contributor to the Breakdown providing our very popular monthly Stained Glass and Bluegrass articles. SEBA is providing the couple a one year Family Membership just in case their family starts to grow. As a footnote to this story we could not overlook the Weeks Family. Bruce and Lois Weeks now have one daughter left at home now, Katie. How we marveled at the little girl with the 'big voice',so grown up and fast becoming a lady. The Weeks will continue performing as The Bruce Weeks Family Band and they can be found on the web at bruceweeksfamilyband.com SEBA sends it's best wishes to Tristan and Jared for a long happy marriage. Proud parents Bruce & Lois Weeks escort Tristan to the altar. Leipers Fork Bluegrass Great bluegrass gospel bands are sometimes hard to find. But Leipers Fork has a winning promotional formula that's getting them a lot of attention. In 2009 Leipers Fork Bluegrass performed 153 Traditional Bluegrass and Gospel Bluegrass Shows and 2010 flourished with many new venue performances for the group. 2011 is busting at the seams with the group performing many new festivals in Georgia, North Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Branson, Missouri and a Cruise scheduled for November 2011. Welcome Leipers Fork Bluegrass to the SEBA family. Kelley Receives Prestigious International Medical Award Imaginative ways to to give back are nothing new to SEBA member Dr. John Kelley co-producer of the popular and successful Stone Mountain Village Bluegrass Festival along with Jack Sartain. Childspring International has awarded Dr. John the Dr. Mark Silverman Global Heart Award. Dr. Kelley, an orthopedic surgeon, was honored for his surgical work with children in Honduras. He received the award on March 19th at the 2011 ”A Gala Evening for Childspring” at the Piedmont Driving Club attended by more than 500 leading citizens of the Atlanta area, including DeKalb County. Dr. Kelley, known to hundreds as a Bluegrass music icon, Dr. John contributes many weeks per year providing orthopedic surgical services to scores of poor children, primarily in the Comayagua, Honduras, area. The goal for 2020 is to transform the lives of 5000 children throughout the global community. The 2011 objective is to provide medical, psychiatric, nutritional and educational services to 250 children. To heal the whole child is the challenge of this faith based charity. A Fund Raiser Idea for Mission in Honduras (5/24/09) The weather was perfect for bubbles so I got out my new homemade bubble maker. Several folks there were interested in my bubble maker. They asked for information about getting their own bubble maker to entertain their grandchildren. This morning in church I was thinking about fund raising for my mission to Honduras. I had the idea that I should offer to make bubble makers for folks who were at the party in exchange for a donation to the mission work being done in Comayagua, Honduras. If you would like to make a donation and receive your own homemade bubble makerlet me know. Write Dr. John at bassbox@comcast.net Editor's note: Some folks give so much. Protégé’s describe her as particularly gifted at creating a relaxed, open atmosphere where writers of all levels can reach deeper and refining their voices and identities as songwriters. Nowhere is this more true than at her Songwriter Retreat, Woodsong Farm, near Cartersville, GA, where the wooden planks, old screen doors, and log barns of the historic 150 year-old homeplace, with the mountains rising above the pastures, all beckon the soul. In Louisa’s words, “we will start with inspiration and individual and group writing, and end with ways to effectively promote and expose your song. There will be time for writing in the serene setting the farm provides, discussion, personal feedback, and pointers about structure and craft. For new writers, the workshop will help you get started and for experienced writers, it will build on your current skills and create a space for you to deepen and “live” in your songwriting.” The workshop also addresses creative ways to increase exposure of your songs. Louisa Branscomb Following the workshop, the Woodsong Spring Master Songwriter Concert will be open to featuring originals by Louisa and guests including Kathy Reed, Martha Ann Brooks, and others. All SEBA members are encouraged to come hear some of Georgia’s finest songwriters in an intimate country setting in Spring. Louisa’s songwriting credentials stretch as far as the mountain views of Woodsong Farm. A nominee for 2011 SPBGMA Songwriter of the Year, Louisa has over 90 cuts in bluegrass and acoustic music and numerous awards, including two IBMA Recorded Events of the Year, two Grammies on her now-standard Alison Krauss hit, “Steel Rails” (Krauss and John Denver), and SPBGMA Song of the Year. Her upcoming Compass release, "I'll Take Love," pairs 13 of her new songs with world-class vocalists the likes of Dale Ann Bradley, John Cowan, Claire Lynch, Alison Krauss, Alison Brown, Josh Williams, the Whites, Dave Peterson, Missy Raines. In the words of Dale Ann Bradley, who has recorded 5 of Louisa’s songs including last year’s chart hit “Don’t You’re your Back,” “Louisa writes with amazing sensitivity and depth. Broken hearts and mended spirits shine through in her songs, and all the songs in her new CD. And she’s the best friend a train ever had!” Louisa invites anyone attending the House Concert to come early and jam over the dinner break or enjoy a picnic on the porch or hillside. Space is limited, so please make reservations early. WORKSHOP: 10:30 – 5:00 April 16. Song share and jam over dinner break 5-6:30 $70.00, $66.00 for SEBA members and students. Balancing their work lives with being a performing band they still travel extensively and have performed on many stages, on cruise ships and school for educational purposes. In January the band performed concerts in 21 Owensboro, Ky. area elementary schools. No matter where they play next let's all get out and support this super group of giving musicians. For more about Valarie Smith & Liberty Pike featuring Becky Buller visit: http://www.valeriesmithonline.com/ Education Workshops featured at many events Want SEBA to help add to the bluegrass experience of your festivals or events? Education was a founding principal of SEBA and informing and encouraging the public and i's members to improve or even learn the skill playing is a prime directive of the SEBA mission statement. The music you enjoy today is often a result of what workshops do for the music community. Our Education committee wants to hear from you. Page 9 April 2011 The SEBA BREAKDOWN How does SEBA get all that information on so many events? SEBA has an automated posting service available for everyone to post any bluegrass related festival or event. It is located at: www.sebabluegrass.org/events/wpw/submit.php Since it's inception thousands have and continue to visit the SEBA website looking for information about everything from jams to parties, workshops, concerts and festivals. Recently all this information has been incorporated in our FREE weekly newsletter the Efans Bluegrass Happenings. Now over 2500 folks get it weekly in an email. Every event in the SEBA website gets on that list. But if it's not on the SEBA site unfortunately it doesn’t get in the free newsletter or in the monthly Breakdown newsletter. Someone must post it otherwise no one will know about it. In summary, we depend on YOU and the music community to get the word out. That's the way it's always been. Thanks to everyone who helps!!! For best results we recommend an event get posted at least 45 days prior to it's occurrence MASTER CLASSES FOR MUSICIANS ON SCHEDULE FOR FRIDAY APRIL 15th BEAR ON THE SQUARE WEEKEND Master Music Classes return to the Bear on the Square Mountain Festival on Friday, April 15. Festival organizers have once again teamed up with North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU) and the Southeast Bluegrass Association (SEBA) to bring in some top notch bluegrass and old-time musicians and instructors to lead the Friday classes this year. The Master Classes will be intensive three-hour long, hand-on classes with master instructors in group sessions. The sessions will be designed for the intermediate musician wishing to improve in such areas as timing, soloing, and playing in groups. The classes will be held from 1-4 p.m. at the NGCSU campus in downtown Dahlonega. The cost of a class is $25 for adults, $15 for students and current SEBA members. Those wishing to sign up for a new SEBA one-year membership* and a class ($40 value) can do so for $30 ($10 discount). There is limited seating for each class, so advance reservations are highly recommended to ensure a spot. Online registration is available at www.bearonthesquare.org or registration information can be obtained by calling Joe Matteson at 706-319-2045. *One year membership offer applies to E-membership only. The SouthEastern Bluegrass Association (SEBA) Education Committee is again serving as sponsor of the Master Classes, which will be held on the NGCSU campus in a classroom setting in partnership with the Friends of Music at the university’s Music Department. The classes and instructors for this year are: Bluegrass Banjo - Geoff Hohwald, popular Atlanta banjo player, teacher and author of several banjo instructional books and videos. The very popular venue in Dallas Ga has become a favorite for fans and performers alike with it's homecoming feel and welcoming spirit. Much like SEBA, the Hardy's do not earn any money on the event, in fact they spend their own money at a loss for the event. We encourage you to support this one day festival to help find a cure. And... Don't forget their July festival when so many SEBA member bands take the stage including The Grascals.
