The Union is devoted to promoting research and education in biochemistry and molecular biology throughout the world and gives particular attention to areas where the subject is still in its early development. It achieves this in several ways. Every three years the Union sponsors an International Congress of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Co-sponsorship of these Congresses by Regional Organizations of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an increasing trend. These Congresses are major international meetings where current research in all fields of biochemistry and molecular biology is considered. Thousands of individual research projects are presented in poster sessions and leading investigators from many nations survey their fields and describe their own research in symposia and plenary lectures. Since 1992 IUBMB has also sponsored IUBMB Conferences and Special Meetings, held in the years between the International Congresses. The IUBMB provides financial support for international symposia on biochemical and molecular biological research topics of current interest. It organizes or sponsors workshops, symposia and training sessions on biochemical and molecular biological education and provides free textbooks and journals to training institutions in developing nations. The Union also funds short-term fellowships for younger biochemists and molecular biologists to travel to other institutions to perform research not possible in their own laboratories, and provides Travel Fellowships for young scientists to attend its Congresses. Sponsorship of meetings and fellowships is restricted to regions that belong to the IUBMB. As well as reaching biochemists through its own meetings, the IUBMB works closely with the four regional organizations that unite the biochemical societies of Asia and Oceania (Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists - FAOBMB), Europe (Federation of European Biochemical Societies - FEBS) the Americas (Pan-American Association for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - PABMB) and Africa (Federation of African Societies of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - FASBMB). Indeed all four are linked formally with the IUBMB as Associated Regional Organizations and three of them receive substantial financial support from the Union. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, the International Society for Neurochemistry and the International Organization for Free Radical Research are also Associated Organizations of IUBMB. Reaching individual biochemists is also the purpose of another very important function of the IUBMB, that of publishing news, reviews, information, original research and nomenclature. Trends in Biochemical Sciences (TiBS) is seen monthly by over 100,000 readers, keeping them informed of research progress across the broad field of biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as of news of meetings, people and biochemical events. Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry publishes original research findings and reviews in the expanding domain of the practical applications of the subject. IUBMB Life expedites the publication of short communications, identified by their novelty and the need for urgent dissemination. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education is dedicated to publishing articles, reviews and editorials to assist the teaching of biochemistry and molecular biology to science and medical students throughout the world. BioEssays, co-sponsored by the IUBMB and seven other ICSU biological Unions, is the monthly current-awareness journal that displays progress across the fields of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. BioFactors publishes reviews and original communications on growth factors and regulatory substances. Molecular Aspects of Medicine publishes reviews that aim to link clinicians and biomedical scientists. The IUBMB is one of 26 Scientific Unions affiliated with the International Council of Science (ICSU), an umbrella organization for scientists worldwide. ICSU was created in 1931 to encourage international scientific activity, to affirm the rights of scientists without regard to race, religion, political philosophy, ethnic origin, sex or language, to join in international scientific affairs for the benefit of mankind. The IUBMB has been a member of ICSU since 1955 (until 1991 as IUB). The IUBMB representative serves as a member of the General Assembly of ICSU and ex-officio takes part in the work of the ICSU working group of the Biological Sciences. Through ICSU the IUBMB has been able to generate broad and often highly productive contacts with other international bodies, including some joint programs. About SBBQ About SBBQ The Brazilian forSociety Biochemistry and Molecular TheSociety Brazilian for Biochemistry and Biology Molecular Biology SBBq was founded in 1967 by research leaders in Brazilian Biochemistry. The initial idea was to organize meetings to exchange experiences and report the results of their work. These meetings initially included conferences and debates about scientific subjects and also political and organizational issues. In 1970, SBBq Executive Committee members decided to hold their future meetings in the city of Caxambu. This town is approximately equidistant from Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro the centers that at the time were responsible for 90% of Brazilian Scientific production. The first Meeting held in Caxambu in 1972 was attended by few researchers and graduate students. Plenary lectures were organized on site and the students gave oral presentations of their thesis work. In 1975 the event’s name changed to ‘The Brazilian Biochemistry Society Annual Meeting’. Since then, these conferences grew in number and quality, in a proportion never imagined by the Society’s founding partners. In 1978, upon recommendation of the Director’s Council and ratification by the General Assembly of the XVII Annual Meeting, the name of SBBq changed to ‘Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’. Throughout its 44 years in existence, SBBq has played a decisive role in the growth and development of Brazilian Biochemistry, proposing plans and actions which contribute toward national policy formation, educational, technological and scientific development. SBBq also serves as a contact vehicle and source of qualified information for the Brazilian society. SBBq keeps its maintains activities by promoting national and international contacts with its congeneric societies and an agreement with Society Portuguese of Biochemistry, Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Chile, Society of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology of Uruguay and Biochemical Society (UK). It is a member of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC), Federation for Societies in Experimental Biology (FESBE) and the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB). Currently, SBBq has 800 active Full Members, including many of Brazil´s most important scientists from different segments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The Society also includes 250 Associate Members, who are mostly graduate students. The Meetings The Annual SBBq Meeting is currently one of the most traditional events of the Brazilian Scientific Community. For three decades, these meetings have provided the scenario and forum for debates concerning the advancement of fundamental knowledge of Biochemical phenomena, its application toward social benefit and confluence of this knowledge with other segments of the biological and physicalchemical sciences. The Meetings have two central targets: first, to offer an opportunity to present and discuss the predominant research themes and their future perspectives for Brazilian Biochemists, and second, to focus on a few central areas of interest. This strategy has been successful and achieves the objective of maintaining the Brazilian scientists’ production visible. At the same time, a profound and extended analysis of some frontier subjects, that change every year, occurs. One feature that deserves special attention is that the scientific program for every meeting is entirely the result of the initiative of members, coordinated by the scientific committee. Scientific Program The program will be composed by Keynote Lectures (KL), Symposia (SP), Courses (CO), Discussion Groups (DG) and Poster Session (PS). Confirmed keynote lectures will be presented by Johann Deisenhofer, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, USA, a German biochemist who, along with Hartmut Michel and Robert Huber, received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1988 for the determination of the first crystal structure of an integral membrane protein, a membrane-bound complex of proteins and cofactors that are essential for photosynthesis. Kurt Wüthrich, The Scripps Research Institute, USA, a Swiss chemist/biophysicist and Nobel Chemistry laureate, developed Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) methods for studying biological macromolecules. Stanley B. Prusiner is an American neurologist and biochemist. Currently the director of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Prusiner discovered prions, a class of infectious selfreproducing pathogens primarily or solely composed of protein. He received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 1994 and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1997 for his prion research. Tom Steitz, Howard Hughes Medical Institue, USA - Steitz was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Ada Yonath for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome. Steitz also won the Gairdner International Award in 2007 for his studies on the structure and function of the ribosome which showed that the peptidyl transferase was an RNA catalyzed reaction, and for revealing the mechanism of inhibition of this function by antibiotics. Martin Chalfie, Columbia University, USA - Dr. Chalfie shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Osamu Shimomura and Roger Y. Tsien for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP. Symposia will consist of lectures delivery by invited senior scientists who are internationally recognized experts and leaders in their fields. Topics of the Symposia are as follows: Aging Autophagy Bioenergy Biomaterials and Synthetic Biology Cancer Cell Signalling Celll Differenciation Chaperones Diabetes Emerging Viral Diseases Inflammation Metabolic Diseases Molecular Biology of Arthropods Molecular Mechanisms in Neurodegenerative Diseases Nanobiotechnology Neurochemistry Neurogenesis Obesity Protein Misfolding Diseases Redox Signalling Science Education Spatial Distribution of Process Inside Cells Stem Cells and Cell Therapy Program Format August 24th Monday 09:30-11:30 11:30-12:00 12:00-13:00 13:00-14:00 14:00-15:00 15:00-15:30 15:30-17:30 17:30-18:00 18:00-19:00 18:00-20:00 19:00-22:00 Opening Exhibit Opening Ceremony Opening Lecture August 25th Tuesday Symposia (SP01 to SP05) August 26th Wednesday Symposia (SP07 to SP15) August 27th Thursday Symposia (SP21 to SP25) August 28th Friday Symposia (SP31 to SP35) Coffee break Keynote Lecture Lunch Keynote Lecture Coffee break Symposia (SP06 to SP10) Coffee break Coffee break Coffee break Keynote Lecture Keynote Lecture Keynote Lecture Lunch Lunch Closing Ceremony Keynote Lecture Keynote Lecture Coffee break Coffee break Symposia Symposia (SP16 to SP20) (SP26 to SP30) Break Time Break Time Break Time Poster Session Poster Session Poster Session Cocktail Young Scientist Program and Fellowships The Young Scientist Program will be an opportunity for young researchers to present results in an international forum and discuss with senior scientists.
