As he accepted questions from the audience, the fans were hoping the season could start immediately as Coach Brownell showed why WSU Athletics Director Dr. Michael Cusack chose him from many applicants to guide the future of the promising Raider program. Since his new appointment, the Raiders have blossomed into one of the top teams of the Horizon League with one of the best recruiting classes coming in this fall. He collected 100th win against UW-Milwaukee, beaten nationallyranked Butler twice and has led the Raiders to the most road wins as a division I team. In just under five years, he has averaged more than 21 wins a season. Additionally, Brownell is one of 15 finalist for the Hugh Durham Coach of the Year Award for mid-major programs. Last year he added to his resume a Horizon League Player of the Year, first-team selection, Defensive Team member and two Newcomer Team members. After his team won the Horizon League, he was named the NABC District 10 Coach of the Year which covers Ohio and Indiana. From day one, his focus has been on the student-athletes. During Brownell’s tenure as head coach, the UNCW men’s basketball program enjoyed an unprecedented era of success. The Evansville, IN native brings a four-year head coaching record of 83-40 to the Raiders along with two NCAA Tournament berths. UNCW posted a 25-8 mark last season and won the CAA Tournament, beating Final Four participant George Mason University. The Seahawks lost in overtime to George Washington University 88-85. His four-year Colonial Conference record was 61-22 which was the best during the period. Brownell was twice named the CAA Coach of the Year (2003 and 2006) and twice the collegeinsider.com Coach of the Year. Foxsports.com also named him the Mid-Major Coach of the Year last year. Brownell compiled five All-CAA performers, one CAA Player of the Year, four All-Defensive Team selections, one Defensive Player of the Year and seven CAA All-Academic honorees. Before taking the helm, Brownell was an assistant or associate head coach under current DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. UNCW posted a 136-103 mark during that eight-year period, including two NCAA and two NIT appearances. During his 12 years in Wilmington, UNCW was one of the best defensive teams in the nation, leading the CAA in defense in all but two of those campaigns. Brownell earned his Bachelor’s Degree from DePauw University in 1991 and completed his Master’s Degree at the University of Indianapolis in 1994. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms of athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). In all sports, all teams participate in their respective postseason League championships regardless of regular-season performance, allowing all studentathletes an opportunity to qualify for NCAA championships. The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located across the street from the RCA Dome and just blocks from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building and the NCAA national office. A 23-2 run over the final 7:25 of the first half proved to be the difference as the Wright State men’s basketball team rolled to a 71-48 win over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in the season opener Monday night at the Nutter Center. Neither team had more than a four-point lead for much of the first half, with Coastal Carolina using a 10-2 run to go up 19-15 with 7:51 to go in the period. A Todd Brown three, though, started the Raiders on their decisive run and after a jumper from the sophomore guard, Brown connected again on another triple to put WSU in front 23-19. Two free throws and a dunk from Will Graham extended the margin to 27-19 and after a Jack Leasure layup temporary broke the Wright State streak, the Raiders closed the period by scoring the final 11 points over a 3:25 span, including two more Brown three-pointers as he tallied 16 of WSU’s 23 points during the run. WSU shot 46 percent overall, 50 percent in the second half, while Coastal Carolina hit for 40 percent for the contest. The Chanticleers led in points in the paint 22-16, but the Raiders went 14 of 16 from the foul line to just three of five for CCU and forced 24 turnovers while committing 18, resulting in a 23-15 differential in points off of turnovers. Brown led all scorers with 20 points and added four rebounds and four assists, while Vaughn Duggins had 16 points, 12 coming in the first half, and chipped in six rebounds and three assists. Scottie Wilson hit all five of his shots, including two threes, in finishing with 14 points. Wright State trailed by as much as seven in the first half, but closed the half with a 15-6 run and then held off a Marshall rally late as the Raiders defeated the Thundering Herd 77-70. After WSU scored the opening three points of the game, Marshall came out strong and built an 18-11 lead following a Mark Dorris three at the 13:16 mark. The Herd advantage was still 21-16 with just over seven minutes to play before the Raiders went on that 15-6 run the rest of the way, five coming from Todd Brown, to take a 31-26 halftime lead. Wright State gradually built on the margin early in the second half and went up 52-40 on two Vaughn Duggins foul shots at the 10:34 mark, only to see Marshall cut the deficit to 60-55 with 6:21 remaining as Tirrell Baines made three free throws. The Herd again came within five on three different occasions over the final three minutes, but the Raiders maintained the lead thanks to six of eight foul shooting down the stretch along with a Brown three and a Duggins fast-break layup on back-to-back plays. Both teams shot 42 percent from the field for the game overall and Marshall had the edge in three-point shooting (41-39 percent) and second-chance points (17-9). WSU, however, countered by going 34 of 42 from the foul line compared to 17 of 22 for the Herd and outscored Marshall 23-14 in points off of turnovers. Brown led all scorers with 23 for WSU and added six rebounds while Duggins had 21 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line. Scottie Wilson chipped in nine points and six boards, Will Graham nine points and five assists and Jordan Pleiman six points and seven rebounds. A 14-3 Marist run to end the first half proved to be the difference as the Wright State men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night, falling 79-64. The Raiders never led as after Scottie Wilson tied the game at two with a jumper, baskets from Louie McCroskey and Ryan Stilphen put Marist ahead for good. WSU, though, stayed closed and trailed just 33-27 following a Troy Tabler three at the 4:31 mark. Marist, however, scored the next six points to extend the margin into double figures and the Red Foxes took a 47-30 lead into halftime behind five more McCroskey points and a Jay Gavin three. Wright State cut the deficit to 70-60 with 4:17 remaining on two Tabler foul shots, but could get no closer as the Red Foxes responded by scoring five straight points. Marist shot 49 percent from the field, 54 percent in the first half, while WSU was at 39 percent for the game. The Raiders committed just nine turnovers compared to seven for the Red Foxes, but Marist was able to take advantage, outscoring Wright State 13-3 in points off of turnovers. Todd Brown led the Raiders with 12 points while Wilson had 11 as did Tabler off the bench.
