Issue I Jan/Feb 2013
From the President
Be Seen in 2013 — Tell your HIHRC Story
In the first days after I learned that I was to be the President of the Heart of Illinois
HR Council for 2013 I spent quite a few moments thinking about what I wanted to
help bring to this wonderful group of HR Professionals. I have served on the board of our council
under four presidents and admire each of them for how they helped to grow our chapter. It is my
hope to work well with this year’s board to continue to enhance all that we have to offer. There are
many projects that we will continue to work on; in addition, I want to spend a little time looking
back. As I was thinking about the coming year, the phrase ―Be seen in 2013 – Tell your HIHRC
story‖ continued to run through my mind. I hope to take time each month to invite members of our
council to share their own stories about what our council has meant to their professional or
personal journeys in human resources and in doing so help to create an even higher level of
community among our members. So, I’ll go first…here is the short version of My HIHRC Story:
I began attending monthly luncheons with colleagues from my office as a young HR Professional
in the late 90’s. I was inspired by the educational aspects of the meetings and by the people. I
truly loved and valued the connections that I made. After about five years of regular attendance,
my schedule did not allow me to attend any longer and I truly missed the HIHRC so much. Thankfully, I was able to return to meetings about five years ago. I joined the board in 2009, serving in a
variety of roles. I attended a study group with HIHRC members and fulfilled a professional goal by
earning my PHR. I was able to attend several conferences and even got to go to Capitol Hill to
speak about HR laws. I have had so many wonderful experiences, but what I cherish most of all is
the relationships that I have built. Some are more professional in nature and some are wonderful
friendships. I am thankful for the Heart of Illinois HR Council!
Would you like to meet other HR professionals and learn from your peers? Would you like to earn
recertification credits? If you would like to know more about our council or how you can get
involved please contact me directly or any of our board members.
If you have not attended a meeting yet and would like to come as a first time guest at no cost
please let us know. We would love to have you join us and consider membership.

ALL DAY WORKSHOP: HR - ROI: A New Approach for the New Economy
Presented by Sara Christensen
February 20, 2013
Weaver Ridge Golf Club
5100 North Weaver Ridge Blvd, Peoria IL
8:00 AM—8:30 AM Registration
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Workshop Program with Lunch
$75 Member, $200 Non-Member, $30 Student
For decades countless Human Resource Professionals have been coveting a seat at the
Strategic Table within their organizations. With the economic downturn of 2008 business
leaders found themselves in a fiscal crisis beyond their foresight. Many HR practitioners
were finally called upon to take their seat at the table and implement complex reduction in
workforce initiatives. With the current fears of a ―double dip‖ recession, many businesses
are again looking to their HR departments to guide them through these uncertain times.
However, most of us are already operating on a ―bare bones‖ talent roster and cannot justify deeper staffing cuts.
It is critical at this time for HR to step back and develop a strategy that validates our seat at the table. We must speak the
language of the business leaders who are depending on us. We must quantify our efforts. And, we must evolve beyond
our identity as ―a cost center‖.
Performing due diligence and developing a ROI is long-standing business best practice, however, rarely considered as a
function of HR. However, if you review most organizational budgets, labor (human capital assets) is usually one of the
largest line items. If we can develop/utilize HR metrics that are aligned with and actually drive the business objectives,
we will elevate our role as a strategic business partner.
This workshop will provide you with the recipe to better quantify your organization’s human capital assets and explore
methodologies in which HR can be instrumental in driving bottom line results.

this project and provide opportunities. As an employer partner, you
also receive several benefits. Goodwill Industries will do a lot of
the legwork for you.
Successful candidates in the program have gone through a prescreening process, several assessments (i.e. skill, career and work
keys assessments), verification of job history, and undergone a background check. They have
defined career and financial goals and have had the opportunity to participate in online classes
build their skill sets.

Mike Byam of Terryberry to present Building a WOW! Recognition Culture is a fast-paced, fun, and informative seminar
that equips HR professionals and business leaders with an understanding of how to engage employees through effective recognition. Learn how to keep employees engaged and motivated. Developing a culture of recognition, in which
employees are genuinely acknowledged for their contributions is more important than ever in a challenging economy not only to bolster flagging spirits, but as a means to maintain productivity, profitability, and retention of key employees.
This presentation demonstrates key findings on how recognition strategies impact business goals, and provides realworld examples and practical solutions for implementing or enhancing a recognition initiative. Attendees will take away
ideas that they can put into practice right away.
Attendees will learn:
•What the latest research shows about how recognition impacts employee engagement, productivity, and profitability
•How businesses are adapting their employee recognition strategies to respond to the current economy
•Review the key steps for developing an effective recognition program and understand how to put them into practice
•Understand which awards are the most and least effective.
