Cross Beams NEWSLETTER OF THE HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, E.L.C.A. The purpose of Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church is to know, and joyfully share, the love of God in Christ. Rev. George Haynes Pastor For Pastoral Care call 361-790-3838 e-mail : hcrosslchurch@gmail.com Website www.holycrossrockporttx.org Located at 2872 Loop 1781 P.O. Box 301 Rockport, TX 78381 _____ C h u r c h O f fi c e 361-727-9140 PASTOR’S PULSE - July 2016 Pastor George Haynes I have just entered into what is, perhaps, the most frightening experience (or venture) of my life. I have just purchased 1,000 copies of my book, Stewardship: One Incredible Adventure. I must now sell at least 375 copies to break even with what I've Invested, and I'm telling you, that just frightens the very bejeebers out of me! It seems to me very, very egotistical to believe that there are that many people who will be interested enough in stewardship to buy my book. And if there are 375 people interested enough to buy my book, that still leaves me with 625 copies of that book taking up space in my home. I'll be honest with you. I wasn't prepared for putting my livelihood on the line when I submitted that book for publication. I had a measure of bravado, I was single then and it was just my own life involved. Now, married, I have Linda involved in this, too. It is frightening, even for a young man like myself. I am not going to ask you all to buy a copy of my book. That would be highly presumptuous and unfair. What I AM asking, is your prayers - lots and lots of your prayers. I wrote this book believing it could in some way benefit and enrich the Church and its members. I have prayed that God would not allow it to be printed if that were not the case. I am assuming- and that takes a lot of guts- that God DOES feel it could be beneficial. Church Secretary Mattie Carpenter e- m a i l : hclchurchsec1@gmail.com ____ Pianist, Joyce Bjork As of today, more than a little nervous, I'm involved in a whole new venture. Pray for me. “CONGREGATIONAL MEETING” JULY 24 (Immediately following worship service) The Church Council is seeking permission to set up a Scholarship Endowment Fund. The purpose of this fund is to give encouragement and support to our young people when they graduate and are preparing to enter into college, train in their chosen field, or move forward into their lifework. R E F L E C T I N G T H E L I G H T O F C H R I S T ’ S L O V E MISSION AND MINISTRY LITTLE LOOKS AT LITURGY After the Canticle of Praise the Pastor invites the congregation to join in the Prayer of the Day or Collect. This prayer gathers together the intentions of the people and concludes the introductory part of the worship service. We next move to the Liturgy of the Word. This will focus on the 1st and 2nd readings, the Psalm, the Gospel and the Homily or sermon. These selections of readings are determined based on a three-year cycle. This cycle is actually based on ancient Jewish practice. The readings ordinarily move from Old to New, with the proclamation of the Gospel being the climax, reflecting how Jesus is the center of salvation history with all Scripture pointing to him. In the Liturgy of the Word, we hear God's word spoken to us. What a blessing. WANT SUMMER READING? Did you know there are over twenty great books for adult reading in the Church Parlor? There are even more books for youth in the children's Sunday school room. Feel free to get and read them, just please also remember to return them. FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH at 301 BUSINESS TX 35 BACK PACK KIDS SAY THANKS!!! Remember– Although school is out we still need donations during the summer for The Back Pack Kids so that we have funds available when school starts. MISSION OPPORTUNITY Altar Guild News GOOD SAMARITAN FOOD BASKET Two new sets of green pulpit and lecture scarves have been purchased for use during Pentecost season. One set with purple grapes is now displayed for a few weeks and another set with a different design will be put up in a few weeks. The "wall hanging" on the right side of the sanctuary was designed and put together by Jo Ann Hees with a few suggestions from Mary Anne McBride. The seashells are there to remind us of the seashore which we all enjoy in the Coastal Bend of Texas. The blue ribbon and flowers represent our blue skies and water as it brightens up the church. The cross was selected from our Cross Wall in the Fellowship Hall. Plans are to move the entire hanging back to there at a later time. All ladies are invited to participate in Altar Guild activities. Anyone interested may contact Mary Anne McBride at 361-790-3832 or email maryann-mcbride@att.net. A very special thanks to all the ladies (and spouses) for their service to the church and our Lord Jesus Christ. His work-Our Hands. Every second Sunday we gather food donations for the Good Samaritan Center. This food is given to needy persons by the volunteers at the center. Donations are down during the summer months so we need to keep this in mind. Bring non-perishable goods and place in the designated area. GOD BLESS! COMMUNITY TABLE TUESDAY JULY 12 2-7 P.M. PARAMENTS for PENTECOST Provided by the Altar Guild: Mary Ann McBride and Jo Ann Hees. SPECIAL EVENT PLANNED FOR the FIFTH SUNDAY IN JULY This summer, we are blessed with five Sundays in the grand, old month of July! So, in order to make it special, we will have an "old-fashioned Sunday" event! Pastor has asked that parishioners fill out a card with their favorite hymn to be sung that day as part of the service, and he plans for us to hear some historical background on as many of the songs as possible. So many of the songs that have already been suggested are the "oldie and goodie" type that we are inviting all of you who are so inclined to come dressed in clothes from ANY historical era. And, if you are not into such shenanigans, then just come dressed comfortably and have a good time praising the Lord with favorite songs. After the service, we will have an "old-fashioned" meal followed by tubs of HOMEMADE ice cream! If you are in town, don't miss it, and BRING FRIENDS! LITTLE LOOKS AT LEVITY Goat for Dinner The young couple invited their elderly pastor for Sunday dinner. While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their son what they were having. "Goat," the little boy replied. "Goat?" replied the startled man of the cloth, "Are you sure about that?" "Yep," said the youngster. "I heard Dad say to Mom, 'Today is just as good as any to have the old goat for dinner.' Risking hardship and danger, they offer peace and healing as signs that the reign of God is near. July 10, 2016-Luke 10:25-37 In this well-known parable, Jesus shifts the focus of concern from speculation concerning who is one's neighbor to the treatment of one's neighbor with mercy. July 17, 2016-Luke 10:38-42 Jesus speaks with two disciples. One is very busy, but the other sits quietly and listens. July 24, 2016-Luke11:1-13 In Luke's gospel, Jesus prays often and urges His disciples to do the same. Here, He teaches them to pray and encourages them to trust in God at all times. July 31, 2016-Luke 12:13-21 The gospel of Luke tells not only how Jesus brought good news to the poor, but also how He sought to save those who were rich. Here He warns against identifying the worth of one's life with the value of one's possessions.
