A Note From Our Principal
Dear Parents, Students and Community:
It is hard to believe that we have finished February and are into March, spring sports,
approaching AP and H.S.A. tests. Now is the time to reflect on the past and prepare for the future.
Interims for the last portion of the third marking period went out March 15, 2013. If you have questions
about grades, please contact your child’s teachers and/or guidance counselor. Working together we
can help your children to be successful. Remember ParentConnect is available to every parent.
Report cards for the Third Marking Period are distributed on April 25, 2013. Interims for the fourth
marking period will be distributed on May 3, 2013 and May 24, 2013. Please put these dates on your
refrigerator.
As the days continue to get longer, it is time to consider the end of the school year. This year
Easter/Spring Break will come late and, if you blink twice, the year will be over with Junior Prom,
Senior Prom, Senior Awards ceremony and graduation. The weather will get warmer and it is
important for students to maintain good attendance and focus on learning. The Maryland High School
Assessments are given May 20 – 23. All Maryland students are required to take these tests as a
requirement for graduation and a Maryland State High School Diploma. Seniors who have not passed
the tests may also prepare Maryland State Bridge Projects to fulfill the graduation requirement.
Chesapeake is running after school help sessions on Thursdays to help students.
Thanks to the generosity of the Student Government Association, each student taking the
H.S.A.’s during the week of May 2oth will receive a light breakfast in the cafeteria.
Advanced Placement exams will also be given in May. Please encourage your children to get
a good night’s rest and eat a good breakfast before they come in for the exams. Studies show
enrollment in Advanced Placement classes as well as taking the AP exam is one of the best
indicators of success in college. Chesapeake is very proud of its Advanced Placement students and
the recognition they have brought their school.
Final preparations for senior events have begun in earnest. Commencement exercises will be
held at Cecile B. Rhodes Field on June 4st at 10:00 am. Senior prom will be at M & T Bank Stadium/
Ravens Stadium on May 11th, followed immediately by Prom Breakfast sponsored by the senior
parents. The Senior Awards Ceremony will be held on May 23 rd in the Auditorium at 6:00 pm. Junior
Prom is May 4th at Chesapeake High School.

OUGAR NEWS
Now is the time to begin stressing the importance of good behavior. Anne Arundel County Public
Schools policy states that, “senior students who are involved in disruptive behavior during the last four
weeks of school will seriously jeopardize the privilege of participating in graduation activities.” The
policy also states that “Any senior in violation of board policy on alcoholic beverages, controlled
dangerous substances or other intoxicants during the last four weeks of school will be prohibited from
participation in ALL senior activities.” Please review this with your seniors.
We have had many great things to celebrate at Chesapeake. Please join me in congratulating
the following 9 students who performed at the county Solo & Ensemble Festival, and all received
Superior ratings!
Instrumental students: Bobby DeNuto, Devon DiMarco, and Jake Sherman.
Vocal Music students: Abbi Colebrook, Brianna Filesi, Josh Hicks, Katie Sacha, Danielle Smith
and Connor Wilson.
Please assist me in praising Cougars in receiving awards from the Future Business Leaders
Regional Competition in different areas of Business: (1st) Lukas Lehmann, Samantha LeMay, Josh
Dixon, John Horvers, Ariana LeBlanc, Sierra Spindler, Lacy Tant, (2nd) Garrett Bair, Michael Blum,
Kimber Patch, Kara Webb, (3rd) Matt Clewley, Kenan Edmond, Cory Maloney, (4th) Zack Brady, Tyler
Engelmeyer, (5th) Anthony Casalino, Victoria LeCompte, and Sarah Taylor.
Chesapeake is very proud of our State Championship Cheerleading Team. The Lady Cougars
won the state championship at Old Mill High School with an outstanding performance that set a new
state record in total points scored.
I would also like to draw your attention to our three high school winners of the County PTSA
Reflections Competition:
Visual Arts was awarded to Eli Heck for “My Baby Shi.”
Photography was presented to Bryanna Kremer for “Splash Magic.”
Dance Choreography was presented to Bethany Sandusky for “Say Goodbye.”
Please view their picture in this news letter.
Lastly, please continue to patronize our local businesses. They have supported Chesapeake
students in many ways.

Security Information
As part of the safety and security procedures supporting your child’s safety, police dogs will be
randomly utilized on school property to check the inside of the building and the parking lot.
Video Camera System
Chesapeake High School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the buildings
and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or
security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given
access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of
School Security at 410-222-5083.
Phone Calls
Parents are asked to refrain from requesting school staff to deliver personal messages to students.
Only EXTREME EMERGENCY calls will be handled by administrators.
We appreciate your cooperation.
Visitors
All visitors to Chesapeake High School must sign in at the Greeters Desk and show Photo ID to get a visitor’s pass before
going to any area of the school building or grounds.
The safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our school will be utilizing a
new system for checking in all visitors. The system is called V Soft by RaptorWare.
When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a staff person in the school office.
This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected: your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will
be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country. If
your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the use of your ID, you will not be allowed access to the school. On future visits
to a school at which you have previously registered, you will only be asked to show your ID as your name will be selected from an existing list
of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the office upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the
building. You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming to school to pick up your child. The information collected
will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students safe is
appreciated.
If you are observing a class, please remember this is not the time for a teacher conference. Please make an appointment to discuss your
child’s performance. Guidance can assist you with the appointment. Please park in visitors’ designated spaces. The numbered spaces are
for teachers and students.
Delivery of flowers and balloons is not permitted.

ELECTRONIC AND AUDIO DEVICES
One ear bud may be worn in the hallways and cafeteria. Music should not be loud enough for another to hear. CHS assumes no responsibility
for lost or stolen electronics in our building.
CELL PHONE AND PAGERS
Students may not have cell phones or pagers turned on or in sight during the regular school day to receive or communicate messages. If
students violate this policy, the device will be confiscated and turned over to an administrator and returned to a parent. If these items are
stolen CHS assumes no responsibility.
OBLIGATIONS
Students who failed to return textbooks, school equipment or clear debts have an obligation. Students will not be able to purchase parking
permits, Homecoming tickets, or prom tickets until the obligation is cleared. Also graduation guest tickets will not be given to seniors until
obligations are cleared.
The school business office has information about student obligations and the financial secretary is available between 8:00-2:00 p.m.
SAFETY ISSUES
As many of you know, we take the responsibility of your child’s safety very seriously. With this in mind, we would like to review the following
school policies:
After 7:17 a.m. all individuals arriving at school must enter via the Main Lobby doors. All other exterior doors to the building are locked.
All visitors must enter through the Main Entrance and stop at the security booth before going to any area of the school building or grounds.
Visitors will be required to wear an ID badge while in the building.
If you are picking up your child early from school for medical or dental appointments, you must sign the student out in the Attendance Office.
Our school personnel will require a photo identification from anyone who comes to school to pick up your child. While this can be
inconvenient, please remember it is ultimately done to protect your child. Please make sure that all persons who have permission to pick up
your child are listed on your child’s Emergency Notification card.

PAUSE BEFORE YOU POST ™
We're pleased to announce Chesapeake High School’s participation in Pause Before You Post™ an
awareness program from Jostens that encourages students to make smart decisions when selfpublishing through online social media. The program is related to our Signature Program “Information
Management” and includes valuable information about cyber bullying. Recent high-profile cases
involving abuse of the Internet has spurred us to make opportunities for our students to learn more
about publishing personal information, particularly when they're using social media sites. This
information went out to students in their Advisory Period on Friday, March 1, 2013. We encourage you
to discuss the advisory lesson with your teenager.
As educators of your children, we believe it is important for parents to be actively involved in the online
lives of their children in order to address inappropriate behaviors before they magnify. Consider the
following tips from Dr. Patchin and Dr. Hinduja. If you see that your child has posted mean or hurtful
comments or photos,
Discuss the posting with them rather than ignoring it.
Talk with them about why it is wrong and how people may judge him or her based on
what they see online.
Encourage children to show compassion for others in real life and online through
reinforcement of positive values such as respect and integrity.

Reflections
“Reflections” is a National PTA program to encourage students to
explore their talents and express themselves. Since 1969, the Reflections Program has inspired students to reflect on a specific
theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in grades
Pre-K through 12 are able to submit entries in the categories of dance choreography, film
production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. The 2012-2013
Reflections theme was “The Magic Of A Moment.”
Three Chesapeake High School students participated in this Reflections program
sponsored by the Anne Arundel County PTA and received the following recognition:
Certificate of Achievement in the Senior Category for Visual Arts was awarded to
Eli Heck for “My Baby Shi.”
Award of Excellence in the Senior Category for Photography was presented to
Bryanna Kremer for “Splash Magic.”
Award of Excellence – Outstanding Interpretation in the Senior Category for Dance
Choreography was presented to
Bethany Sandusky for “Say Goodbye.”
Additionally, Ms. Sandusky received an Award of Excellence from the Maryland State

Future Business Leaders of America
The Future Business Leaders of America has long been an established club at
Chesapeake. Part of a national organization, our members build leadership,
organization, and networking skills in a business environment. They interact with
business people and compete in events that prepare them for access into the
business world.
This year we hosted the Region 8 Conference for schools from Carroll and Anne
Arundel Counties. Regional President and Chesapeake Chapter President Josh
Dixon led the opening and closing sessions and presented the awards.
Community volunteers and internship coordinators from the county judged the
performance events. Our students did an outstanding job! Those who placed first
through fourth in the objective tests and first or second in the performance events
are eligible to compete at the State Leadership Conference at Hunt Valley in
April. Winners from that event will be eligible to move to the national conference
in Anaheim, California.
The Chesapeake winners with place and event are:
First place: Ariana LeBlanc – Accounting 2, Sierra Splindler – Computer Applications, Lacy Tant – Business Presentations, Jake Horvers – Impromptu Speaking, Lukas Lehmann – Public Speaking 1, Josh Dixon and Samantha
LeMay – Emerging Business Issues (team)
Second place: Kara Webb – Accounting 1, Kimber Patch – Sports Management,
Garrett Bair and Michael Blum – Business Presentations (team)
Third place: Kenan Edmond – Introduction to Technology Concepts, Cory
Maloney – Personal Finance, Matthew Clewley – Public Speaking 1
Fourth place: Zackary Brady – Accounting 1, Tyler Engelmeyer – Economics
Fifth place: Victoria LeCompte – Business Communication,
Sarah Taylor – Introduction to Business, Anthony
Casalino – Sports Management
Congratulations on a job well done! Best of luck at States!!

UPCOMING EVENTS / NEWS
COUGAR CARE WEEK IS HAPPENING NOW!
Teenagers face a myriad of issues — suicide, poverty, violence, drugs and pressure to succeed. CHS Counseling Dept is preparing events, activities, seminars all geared to helping students cope and live safely and
emotionally balanced in our fast-paced world. Research shows that when a student feels connected to their
school, they are less likely to be involved in high-risk behaviors.
The PTSA will hold a free stress coping, "Suicide QPR Training (Question, Persuade, Refer)" class if
there is interest .. the response for our last seminar was great, and the time spent proved to be very effective
for teaching stress coping techniques to parents and students for suicide prevention. If you would like to
participate in an upcoming offering, please contact Debbie Gilberto, CHS PTSA President: dgilberto@aacps.org.

SPECIAL THANKS to Ms. Diane Corwell-Young for chairing the Reflections Program at CHS again this
year!
“Reflections” is a National PTA program to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since 1969, the Reflections Program has inspired students to reflect on a specific theme and create
original artwork. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are able to submit entries in the categories
of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. The
2012-2013 Reflections theme was “the magic of a moment.”
Three Chesapeake High School students participated in this Reflections program sponsored by
the Anne Arundel County PTA and received the following recognition:
Certificate of Achievement in the Senior Category for Visual Arts was awarded to Eli Heck for “My Baby
Shi.”
Award of Excellence in the Senior Category for Photography was presented to Bryanna Kremer for “Splash
Magic.”
27
Award of Excellence – Outstanding Interpretation in the Senior Category for Dance Choreography was presented to Bethany Sandusky for “Say Goodbye.” Additionally, Ms. Sandusky received an Award of Excellence from the Maryland State PTA. Our CHS Reflections program has only been in existence for 4
years. So to have received this much recognition is great.
VOLUNTEERS are needed to support the faculty at CHS! If you can spare any time at all, please
consider completing the volunteer form. You will be emailed when a project is available and you
will have the opportunity to select only those projects that you have time to undertake. Visit our
website to obtain the volunteer form at http://www.aacps.org/aacps/chhs/PTSA.html or
email Jenni Smith at JenniSmith1020@gmail.com.
