to offer “out-of-school” art opportunities,
both during school vacations and now
almost every Tuesday and Thursday during summer for 6-15 year olds (unless
otherwise noted) at $5 each class. We
encourage signing up in advance to help
us plan, but walk-ins are welcome.

puppets and fun sock puppets. Learn how to perform using your puppets.

Our Heritage – from the Executive Director Kris Pearson
Senator Kristin Gillibrand recently announced that she has begun the process to have the Finger Lakes declared a National
Heritage Region – a designation that would recognize both our
unique physical landscape, which makes living in this region
such a joy, as well as the impact that the people of this area
have had on our nation’s history.
In making her announcement, Senator Gillibrand made mention
of the place that the arts has had and continues to have in the
region. Certainly the landscape has proven inspiring for generations of artists and we continue to attract and develop creative
talent in a wide range of artistic mediums. It’s something that we
often take for granted – knowing local painters, local potters, local sculptors and jewelry
artists, listening to performances by local musicians, enjoying local playhouse performances and so forth.
The history of this region shows that such local talent and local activities can cause ripples that can have impacts even on the national level. Some we see – Fox Run wine
served in a swanky London, England restaurant; paintings of Keuka Lake that show up
in galleries and exhibits across the country and into Europe – while others require a test
of time to determine just what their impact is on our national heritage.
We’re excited to be part of the recognition that this area and the work that our residents
have done and continue to do matters in the “grand scheme of things”. We may be
small but, thanks to our sense of community, we are also mighty! Thanks for helping
spread the word of our successes!

It’s a great time to be in Yates County and to take advantage of our beautiful lakes and all
that our area has to offer. For many it’s a relaxing time – but not at the Arts Center.
We’ve geared up for a very busy summer, starting with our first “juried” show (where the
participants have to be accepted to show and then the pieces are judged by professional
artists) and moving into Art of the Finger Lakes on exhibit in the Flick Gallery.

residents, artists, and
visitors by providing
opportunities for active
participation in the arts.
To this end, we plan,
promote, and develop
art programs and
projects; coordinate,
schedule, and publicize
events; develop & maintain physical facilities.
We have workshops galore for all ages and interests. Every Tuesday and Thursday
morning during the summer there will be a workshop for children – visiting or local, all are
welcome. We have master artists and local artists
teaching everything from “zendoodling” to collage to
painting in many mediums to experienced artists
and beginners. We’re welcoming artists from Florida, New York City, Philadelphia, Texas, Connecticut and more to work, teach and learn.
You’ll see us supporting the Finger Lakes Chamber
Music Festival events, the Concerts in the Park
series, as a site for the Chamber’s Business After
Hours in September and as part of the Sidewalk
Sales days with our Attic Art Sale in July.
We’re a great place to find a fun and unique gift for
a special occasion, to say thanks, to brighten up
your home or to remember a great summer. We’re
never too busy to welcome you to the Arts Center.

“ART IN THE FINGER LAKES”
The opening reception of the new exhibition “Art in the Finger Lakes” is on Friday,
July 31st from 5 to 7 PM. Refreshments will be provided. The show will be an illustration of the art of the area. Along with the ACYC Member Artists we feature the work
of remarkable talents: Bill Mowson (painter) and Don Sottile (sculpture/drawings).
Bill Mowson: “My work comprises an effort
to depict the beauty, light, and magic of the
NYS Finger Lakes region in transparent
watercolor”. Bill uses elements of abstraction and passages of wet-in-wet as well as
calligraphic and drybrush techniques to bring the observer into his works.
The highest quality transparent pigments and 100% cotton paper are used
for his original works. A Giclee process is used to create reasonably
priced limited edition high quality reproductions in several formats.
Bill Mowson is a multiple award winning nationally recognized watercolor
artist. His work has appeared in numerous regional, national, and international publications. Bill’s original paintings are part of many private and
corporate collections throughout the US.
Don Sottile: "In elementary school I got in trouble for drawing all the time not
spending enough time on my other studies. I’ve loved to draw ever since I can
remember.”
“Body language, in subtle or in extreme gestures, can be expressive and abstract, very much in the same way an exquisite piece of music without words
expresses emotion.”
Don’s drawings, are the initial creative steps
of his wood or bronze sculptures, as well as
some final results.
In the recent past, in addition to many other
creations, a larger than life statue of Daniel
Penfield, Penfield New York’s founder, was
completed and dedicated in 2012. Don’s
latest commission currently underway is a
bronze statue of the “Marmaduke” cartoonist
Brad Anderson with the dog “Marmaduke” for the Town of Portland, NY.
Don is exhibiting regularly his work at the Flick Gallery. He has consistently
demonstrated a strong support to the Arts Center. He is the 2014 ACYC
Artist of the year.
You are invited to come to the Flick Gallery and enjoy the work of these gifted
artists, along with that of the ACYC Members Artists. The show at the Arts Center on Main Street Penn Yan is
open to all and wheel chair accessible. It will run from July 29 until September 5, 2015.

Arts Center Welcomes Artists for Residency
Thanks to Dr. Annie Smith’s generous gift of her lakeside estate,
Sunny Point, the Arts Center of Yates County has a small seasonal residence facility which is generally used to house visiting instructors during the summer months.
Five years ago the Arts Center’s board of directors decided to offer artists from around the country the opportunity to spend time
pursuing their art “in residence” at Sunny Point. Currently the organization offers two ten-day
residency periods (one in July, one in September), available on a competitive basis to visual,
literary, or performance artists. Artists are invited to apply before May 1st. A volunteer committee then reviews the submissions and chooses artists for the residency.
This year’s committee reviewed 20 applications from artists working in Michigan to Sao Paulo,
Brazil who were painters, printmakers, writers, and poets. Considering the relative youth and
size of the Arts Center’s residency program, the quality of work submitted was exceptionally
high and the decision on the final residencies challenging. Therefore, the Arts Center is
pleased to welcome writer Marty Correia of New York City and printmaker Martha Knox of
Philadelphia to Sunny Point this year.

“Art Inspires Music”, to be performed by musicians from the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra as
part of the Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival, will premiere four short compositions, by four
separate composers, each inspired by an ACYC artist. The concert is on July 11, 7:30, at

Our First Annual Juried Show
Continues Through July 25
On display at The Flick Gallery are the 60 accepted entries from the ACYC First Annual Painting & Photography Juried Exhibition, professionally judged, delivered, hung in the gallery, and awarded prizes at the opening. The winners were not yet announced at press time,
so stop in and see Best of Show Painting Florence Middlebrook Award supported by a gift
from Paul and Nancy Middlebrook, and Best in Show Photography Award given by Dr. Stephen and Elise Rosenfeld. A full-color exhibit catalog of the show has been printed.
A Popular Vote (“People’s Choice”) Award will be given to the artist for the art work receiving the most votes during the run of the exhibition (June 22-July 27). The visiting
public will have an opportunity to fill out a ballot at the ACYC
Flick Gallery while they view the exhibition of this show. We
encourage everyone to vote!!

with three or four days of activities going from 10 am – 3 or 4 pm. Watch our Facebook page,
look for emails, and check our website for further plans.
Teachers and artists who may want to get involved, please contact Kris at the gallery
with your ideas. For the fun of working with young creative hands we pay $30 per hour.
“Palm of the Hand” Writers
Mondays July 6 & August 3,
4:00-5:30 PM
The first Monday of every month, 4-5:30 PM, “Palm-ofthe-Hand” memoir writers meet, in the Board Room of the Arts
Center. The concept of “Palm of the Hand” is to write about a
single anecdote of your life expressed in no more than one
page. If you’ve wanted to put down memoirs of your life, but
didn’t know how to begin, this is a great format to start. We each
read and offer feedback if requested. (And we each kick in $1 to
ACYC.)

Check out the “how-to” or art appreciation books at the second floor elevator landing. Thanks to Sandy and
Richard Cook for moving and organizing them. Feel free to borrow or donate materials, Honor system.
VHS to DVD? Someone out there, HELP!
We have quite a number of VHS tapes we’d love to convert to DVDs. Does anyone have a machine for doing
that? We don’t have the $10/each to pay a service to convert them. Tell Kris at the Gallery.

(Continued from Page 4) Marty, our June/July resident, is a writer from New York City. While
she’s been working and writing for almost 20 years she only graduated (summa cum laude)
from New York University with a degree in creative writing in 2012. She finished her Masters of
Fine Arts in 2014, also at NYU, where E.L. Doctorow was her thesis advisor. Marty’s currently
working on an historical novel about “four generations of Russian arsonists and other troubled
characters in Bridgeport, CT.” Four literary agents are already interested in the book. The
committee was impressed both by Marty’s style of writing, which was extremely high quality,
and her vision and discipline for her time at Sunny Point. Marty is working full time while writing her novel so the timing and length of the residency will work well for her.
Martha, our September resident, is a teaching artist in residence at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She’s a printmaker and illustrator, working mostly in “hand-pulled woodcuts.” Her work has been featured in exhibitions in and
around Columbus, Ohio and Philadelphia for more than a decade. Martha’s last project was a
book called Owl and Cat in Love “a wordless reimagining of Edward Lear’s The Owl and the
Pussycat.” Her current work is based on an old poem The Nautilus and the Ammonite. Spiral
shaped ammonites, Martha learned during a course at the Wagner Free Institute for Science,
were once common but died out with the dinosaurs. She’s planning to finish work on the story
board for that book and work on some of the images…for publication through her new business, Words on Woodcuts Press, which will publish finely crafted gift and picture books featuring her woodcut prints.
We hope both artists find their time here inspiring and productive!
2015 Keuka Lake Triathlon
It was a chilly start to the day but it turned out beautifully! Temperature of the water was 61 and we were pleased
to have eighteen volunteers in the water in boats and kayaks. They pulled five people out of the water and were
there for athletes to rest holding on to the boats as the one
leg of the race was quite windy as well as being cold.
Score-this is always pleased with our volunteers and the
bike race captain was especially pleased with those who were on the bike course--happy
people who were excited to be there!
We had lots of people show up at 5:00 A.M. to help with registration and in the transition area to help with body marking on the athletes. And then there were all the dedicated folks out
on all the different courses helping direct traffic and keep the athletes heading in the right direction.
The race would not be such a success without all the volunteers so a big thank you to all who
participated! We hope you will mark your calendars for the
2016 triathlon to be held on Sunday, June 5, 2016.

Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Love
Karen Love writes:
I became acquainted with the ACYC during the reconstruction
of the new facility on Main Street. My husband Thom and I retired to Keuka Lake from Corning and our friend Bob Flickinger,
who was working on the reconstruction committee, invited
Thom to design and build the docent’s desk for the new gallery.
We had not spent much time at the old facility and hadn’t realized the number of talented artists living among us or how generous they are in sharing their skills with the community. Since
volunteering I have been fortunate to meet many of these wonderful people and see how art can bring people together.
During my spare time I like to quilt and do needlework. Whenever we can we visit our 2 grandchildren in Minneapolis and our daughter in NYC as well as my mother who lives in London, Ontario, nearby where I grew up. We feel fortunate to have found our way to Keuka Lake and are
enjoying the many interesting attractions that make up the Finger Lakes Area. The Arts Center
of Yates County is certainly one of those.

Art Guild Offers Day Trips to Museums
The Penn Yan Art Guild is offering two day trips (open to the public) to regional museums to
view the current shows: Wednesday, August 12, to the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse to
see contemporary art by Susan Roth, and Wednesday, September 16, to the Munson Williams
Proctor Art Institute for “The Age of Impressionism”. See page 12 for more details.
Organized in 1962, the Penn Yan Art Guild holds monthly meetings to
provide opportunities to learn new techniques and/or enhance your
artistic creativity. They also provide a chance to network with fellow
artists and plan activities. Meetings, usually held at the Arts Center

Class size is limited; please register early to avoid closed classes. Classes with inadequate enrollment are cancelled 1
week before the first class meeting so please register early.
All fees refunded when ACYC cancels a class. Refunds of
class fees, less $10 administrative fee, are made for withdrawals prior to 2 business days before to first class or 2 weeks
prior to full week workshop.

Penn Yan Art Guild Organizes Day Trips for EVERYONE
PYAG extends an invitation to their members, members of ACYC, and guests to participate
in Day Trips to special art exhibitions. Transportation is being provided by K-Ventures and
price includes gallery entry fee. There will be a stop for lunch for which each participant will
be responsible.
Syracuse – Everson Museum of Art:
Handmade: The Art of Susan Roth – Three rooms filled with more than 30 of Roth’s unique
and colorful paintings from her early stain paintings, influenced by the Color Field painters, to
recent works in powder-coated steel. Roth’s restless experimentation has resulted in a body
of work that pushes painting to the limits and has repeatedly opened new areas for exploration. These innovative works are made possible through the use of acrylic products that Roth
has had a hand in developing over the years in collaboration with Golden Artist Colors. This
Docent Led Tour will also include ceramic works from the Everson’s renowned collection.

Stepping Out for Art in July:
Sixteenth Year...ah, sweet...for Art Barn
Sixteen years ago the “Art Barn” Independence Day event was born when Hannelore Wolcott Bailey, wellknown local artist, built a winter storage barn for boats, and saw its potential as a well-lighted gallery for displaying
her art. Over the years she has invited a dozen different artist friends to share her space and offer their talents for this annual exhibit and sale.
This year July 4th conveniently falls on a Saturday, so the barn will be open both weekend days: Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5, 9-4. Visible from
Route 54, 2 ½ miles south of Penn Yan, it is located on
Blue Spruce Lane. The clutch of artists include (l-r in
photo) Fran Bliek, Char DiGennaro, Bonnie Barney,
Suzanne Fenner, and Hannelore Wolcott Bailey.
Hammondsport: Art Show in the Park Every Year
The 49th Annual Keuka Lake Art Association Show will be held July 11 & 12 in the Hammondsport Village Square. Categories include watercolor, oil and acrylics, drawing and graphics, sculpture, photography, pottery, and jewelry. High school seniors and college students who are juried in may participate

Sprucing up at Sunny Point ...from Di Johnson and the Committee
We did in fact have a clean-up at Sunny Point June 20th. With the help of Susan Peck, Kris Packard, Byron Long, Suzie Johnson and me, we cleaned up the overgrown landscape around the studio barn and the
white cottage as well as groomed the beach front and scrubbed 32 chairs. Suzie, Susan and Kris can now
be officially acclaimed as Chair Persons Extraordinaire.
Some of the bushes were so overgrown, they blocked the view from the cottage and access to pathways
and steps. The beach was the recipient of everything that could float in and left there after the high water
level last week. Byron also hosed out the floor of the pottery studio ne boathouse. The reason the floor
was so slippery is that the fine soapstone dust when moistened, becomes as slippery as, well....soap!
That’s from last week’s Soapstone Carving workshop.
We did all this while Janis Long was conducting her copper
bracelet class. All ready for Artist in Residence to move in.
