Your input was greatly appreciated and will be used to continue improving my priesthood. May God bless you. Rev. Msgr. Peter Galek The St. Colette Food Pantry has 15 to 25 families that are in need of our assistance for various reasons. We ask that if you want to help, donate any non-perishable items and gently used clothing. Just leave them in Halpin Hall and the food pantry workers will distribute \everything. With thanks. St. Colette Novena Starting February 26th, 2016, we will be praying the St. Colette Novena leading up to her feast day on March 6th. The last day of the novena will be March 5th. The novena will be prayed in the church at 6:00PM. Usually we would have a mass on her feast day but since March 6th is a Lenten Sunday, we will instead have a special mass in honor of St. Colette on Monday, March 7th at 6:30PM. “Let us praise the Father in his mercy and the Son by his passion and the Holy Spirit the fountain of peace and sweetness and love. Amen, amen without ceasing!” This Trinitarian formula is taken from the end of St. Colette's testament and is a sample of the novena. Page Four “To Teach Who Christ Is” is an Archdiocesan initiative that was begun by Cardinal George about five years ago. The aim of To Teach Who Christ Is is to strengthen and empower parishes and schools to proclaim the Gospel message. To achieve that aim he realized it was necessary to undertake a really ambitious plan to ensure a solid financial foundation especially for our Catholic schools. However, that alone would be insufficient if the physical plant and finances of the parishes were not only stronger. Moreover, there needed to be an investment in our Share Faith religious education ministries to support the faith development of our Catechists and provide them with training to enhance their classroom performance. The estimated amount to achieve this goal seemed daunting, $350,000,000.00. $150,000,000.00 was to go to establish an endowment for a robust scholarship program that would provide sufficient funds and be sustainable well into the future. $30,000,000.00 was to go to necessary life, health and safety repairs and upgrades to our school buildings. $10,000,000.00 was to go to enhancing our Religious Education (CCD) ministries and another $2,000,000.00 to provide for future development of these ministries. The rest would largely go to the parishes to make needed repairs, upgrade facilities, pay off debts and other things that would provide each parish with the wherewithal to create a community of intentional disciples on fire with the desire to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. Weekly Stewardship Reflection “I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” (GENESIS 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our earthly home? The works of mercy on the road of the Jubilee MENSAJE DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO PARA LA CUARESMA 2016 “Misericordia quiero y no sacrificio” (Mt 9,13). The works of mercy God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbour and to devote ourselves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbours in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. On such things will we be judged. For this reason, I expressed my hope that “the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; this will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty, and to enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy” (ibid., 15). For in the poor, the flesh of Christ “becomes visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the exiled… to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us” (ibid.). It is the unprecedented and scandalous mystery of the extension in time of the suffering of the Innocent Lamb, the burning bush of gratuitous love. Before this love, we can, like Moses, take off our sandals (cf. Ex 3:5), especially when the poor are our brothers or sisters in Christ who are suffering for their faith. 3. Page Eight Weekly Reflection Reflexión Semanal There was a time when I used to enjoy a good, ripping thunderstorm. But since the times that storms flooded our basement and brought down large tree branches that took out the fence and barely missed the house, I find myself in dread whenever clouds begin to darken the sky. Imagine the fear of Abram when the birds of prey swooped down on the carcasses and a dark cloud enveloped him, and he fell into a trance. Also think about the fear of Peter, James, and John when a cloud came over them on the mountain, and a voice came out of the cloud. Peter babbled on, not knowing what he was saying. These clouds, unlike the thunderclouds, preceded a promise. Abram received from the Lord a covenant: a promise that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, and that the land that he saw would be for him and his descendants forever. We, too, are recipients of the promise. In the Transfiguration on the mountaintop, Jesus was revealed as the Exodus to be accomplished in Jerusalem; in other words, Jesus' death and resurrection would begin a new covenant with all people and with the Earth. "We await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 3:30), who will come again. We need not fear the clouds any more, for in the words of Psalm 27, "I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD." Copyright (c) J. S.
