The following excerpt was sent to me by a fellow writer (and friend) in Texas,
and launches “In Step at Perry’s” third consecutive year of publication.
“T’was the month after Christmas and all through the house nothing would fit
me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I’d nibbled, the eggnog I’d taste at the holiday parties had gone to
my waist.
When I got on the scale there arose such a number; when I walked to the store, less a walk than a
lumber.
I’d remember the marvelous meals I’d prepared, the gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared; the
wine and the rum balls, the bread and cheese and the way I’d never say, ‘No, thank you, please.’
As I dressed myself in my husband’s old shirt and prepared once again to do battle with dirt, I said to
myself, as only I can…’You can’t spend a winter disguised as a man!’
So away with the last of the sour cream dip, get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip. Every last
bid of food that I like must be banished till all the additional ounces have vanished. I won’t have a
cookie, not even a lick. I’ll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won’t have hot biscuits, or corn bread or pie, I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry. I’m hungry, I’m
lonesome, and life is a bore…but isn’t that what January is for?
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot,
to all and to all a good diet!”

Update on Shearing of DJ’s Locks ~ December’s issue of “In Step at
Perry’s” contained an article about DJ Buddy
Mastin’s (a.k.a. Budd Man) selfless efforts to raise
$2,500 by December 24th for the Special
Olympics/MD organization. If that goal was reached
then Budd Man was ready to buck up and have his
head shaved. Although Budd Man fell slightly shy of his
goal ($2,044 raised by Dec. 24th) and was spared from the clippers, his
January 30th goal of reaching $3,000 is still very much alive. If you’re
interested in helping Budd Man reach his ultimate goal, then copy and paste
the link below which will lead you to his personal web donation page:

Entertainment Industry Takes a Huge Hit in 2009
Regardless of anyone’s personal music venue, the artistic
endeavors of the following star performers, whom we lost during
2009, will be forever missed.
February 11 – Estelle Bennett (age 67)…one of the Ronnettes, ‘60’s
girl group (song ~ “Be My Baby”)
February 14 – Louie Bellson (age 84)…jazz drummer, performed
with Duke Ellington; wife Pearl Bailey
February 18 – Snooks Eaglin (age 72)…New Orleans R&B singer, guitarist
March 7 – Jimmy Boyd (age 70)…child actor, singer (song ~ “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”)
March 25 – Dan Seals (age 61)…Half of duo England Dan and John Ford Coley
May 15 – Wayman Tisdale (age 44)…Accomplished jazzman; earlier a college NBA basketball star
June 3 – Koko Taylor (age 80)…Regal, powerful singer known as “Queen of the Blues”
June 25 – Michael Jackson (age 50)… aptly named ~ ”King of Pop”
August 26 – Ellie Greenwich (age 68)…Co-wrote some of 1960’s most enduring songs, e.g., “Be My
Baby”
September 14 – Patrick Swayze (age 57)…Dancer turned movie superstar; noted for legendary movie,
“Dirty Dancing”
October 13 – Al Martino (age 82)…Singer (song ~ “Spanish Eyes”); also played Frank Sinatra type role
in “The Godfather”
December 1 – Aaron Schroeder (age 84)…songwriter (Elvis Presley’s song “It’s Now or Never”)
On May 20th, at the young age of 59, one of our own local
musical artists, Charlie Taylor, left us with a huge hole in
our hearts. Charlie played with the DC Magnatones and later
with the band, Second Coming. If you never heard Charlie
Taylor sing, then you missed out on listening to a heavenly
voice that left you short of speechless.

Check out them pearly whites ~~ Perry’s
General Manager, Kristos Miliotis, couldn’t
help but be “all smiles” as he accepted a
holiday wreath from all of the Perry’s hand
dancers. What made this wreath so unique is
that it was decorated with photo ornaments
of the entire Perry’s day and evening staff,
including Patriarch, Perry Miliotis and sons,
Kristos and Michael. By the way, that smile was
already plastered on Kristos’ face as he was still reeling
from celebrating his 26th birthday on the 26th day of December!
Every picture tells a story ~~ Photos are a very powerful
medium that tell a story, share a significant moment or
occasion, and capture emotions that can be revisited time after
time. Each image is an expression, sometimes unforgettable
and sometimes… no words are necessary.
Special thanks to a fun loving group of folks at Perry’s who allowed this editor to take liberties with
some “unforgettable” photos in 2009 and to add salt to the wound, even add some “creative” captions.
Good news (for some) is that the “Wacky Photos” segment of this tabloid is continuing in 2010.
By the way, no clue as to who this guy is but his picture was available in Clip Art. Goofy is as goofy
does! Got to give this guy some credit for posing and posting this photo online!
January Birthdays ~~ It goes without saying that we
ALWAYS find a reason to celebrate at Perry’s every
Thursday evening but once a month we amplify our reasons
by recognizing our “In Step at Perry’s” regulars’ birthdays.
Please join us on January 7th at Perry’s as we extend our
best wishes to: Susie Kees, Ned Batchellor, Jim
Pearce, Stanley Sarro, Elena Davis, and Mickie
Moriarty.
As in 2009, we are appreciative of the pleasant bonus
extended to our birthday folks…15% off the dining bill, compliments of Perry’s management. (P. S.
Please remind your server prior to receiving your final tab.)
“May 2010 mark the beginning of a new year filled with friendship, love,
laughter, music, and continuous dancing!”
DJ Doo Wop Jack and Mickie
“Dance lets you express everything – whatever is going on in your life.
It makes you feel powerful.”

WACKY PHOTOS!
W
Not sure if Donna stepped on Bill’s foot on purpose
but from the smirk on her face, what do you think?
Bill caught doing his chin lifts while
Elaine is looking the other way!
Hey, Mikey, you might want to
pay attention to that pinky
finger!
Glenn gets a big chuckle as Chuck
procrastinates about having his picture
taken.
Pat’s expression tells it all as
John is going strong on their 6th
straight fast dance!
Sondra receives a token of
appreciation from Stan. By the
way, Stan is taking orders for his
“How So Lucky” tee shirt.
Rick thought it was the Cupid Shuffle but
is trying to figure out what dance steps
Stan is doing.
Sure would like a male partner…wonder
where all the guys went…bathroom break
maybe???
Taking a much
needed break, Chef
John, is definitely
NOT interested in
learning how to
dance after seeing
Joe and Bill.
Wonder how long Stan has been scratching that itch and
keeping Jeanette in a holding pattern?
