As the Guest Speaker was a senior media
personality, the discussion on a variety of
topics was highly interactive. Ms. Ghosh
started with the perception of Media among
readers/viewers. Media is seen to be
intolerant. Media has made it a habit of
overreacting and sensationalizing when
reporting news. Journalists consider
themselves to be right all the time especially
when dealing with netas and bureaucrats.
On the subject of ‘freedom of expression’,
Ms. Ghosh was very clear. Every national be
it students have a right to air their opinions.
Criticism is a democratic right. The start may
be in the right direction but what matters is
where it ends. Anti establishment views can
Ms. Pallavi Ghosh, Political Editor, CNN IBN be accepted. But very often this stretches to
anti-national views which cannot be accepted.
The audience was of the view that media overreacts and highlights low interest news items especially
when it involves politicians. Small comments get blown out of proportion. There is a tendency to report on
the negative angle of a news story. Some channels have more of a shouting match instead of a fruitful
discussion.
Ms. Ghosh accepted that Media has to be
Responsible.. She explained the two facets in
journalism are news reporting and news
analysis. There needs to be a larger
understanding of issues. Re live coverage of
certain events which could not be considered
responsible, Ms. Ghosh explained that till then,
neither the Government or Media had framed
any guidelines.
End of the day, news stories will revolve around
the behavior of top level politicians and the
impact on the common man be it farmers to
clear land for rallies or top industrial bodies
questioning policies of the Government.
Ms. Ghosh concluded that it was a welcome
change to not be in the midst of political netas or
government bureaucrats.
