Editorial:
H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared the 30th
November every year to be observed as the ‘Commemoration
Day’ in memory of and in tribute to the sacrifices offered by the
nation’s martyrs and its loyal people, who gave their lives so as to
keep the UAE flag flying aloft.
Every year ADNOC and group of companies celebrate the UAE
National Day to commemorate the day when the seven rulers of
the Emirates emerged on 2nd December 1971 to announce the
birth of a country which in less than four decades has become
a giant country. The people in the UAE celebrate this glorious
occasion in a rather joyful and proud way. The UAE arrayed
itself in its best finery showing the UAE Flag and photos of the
Sheikhs. A scene people never get tired of seeing every year.
Held under the patronage of H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, President of the UAE, the 18th edition of ADIPEC will
take place from 9th to 12th November at the Abu Dhabi National
Exhibition Centre, ADNEC under the theme “Innovation and
Sustainability in a New Energy World”.
The event is hosted by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company,
ADNOC, supported by the UAE Ministry of Energy and the Abu
Dhabi Chamber, and expected to break many records in term of
participants and visitors.
On the other hand, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mansour
Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of
Presidential Affairs, ADNOC participated in the 11th Liwa Dates
Festival from 22nd to 30th July 2015. As customary, ZIRKU
dates, including the unique new two tone date were displayed at
ADNOC pavilion.
Following its on-going support to the functions of the SPE middle

A closer look at
Zirku
offshore life
ZIRKU Island hosts ZADCO’s main industrial facilities along with the
residential complex and the associated recreational facilities on its 8 km
sq area with over 3000 personnel live on the island.
The Island is the main offshore collection system where crude oil from
ZADCO oilfields is received via pipelines and processed, stored and
exported.
Besides its oil treatment facilities, Zirku is also providing leisure activities
and entertainment places for its residents. high quality housing and
sport facilities are provided including football, basketball pitches and
tennis court beside two swimming pools, cinema and games and
music rooms. These are also complemented by restaurants, a
shop, a bank and an adequate medical care as well as a fenced
zoo, a huge garden and recently a heritage village.
12
ZIRKU
also hosts
state-of-the-art training
facilities, modern equipment and
top housing complex. The island offers
spectrum of training opportunities for UAE Nationals
and fresh graduates to acquire necessary experience
and skills through a structured program and on-job-training
(OJT) with view to be fully integrated within the company in
a certain period of time.
They also have the opportunity to learn directly from highly
experienced employees who work hard to transfer their lifelong
knowledge to the new generation. Due to ZADCO operation
expansion, the island is witnessing a proportional increase in
number of personnel from both ZADCO employees and those of
ZADCO contractors.
In this article we will explore the daily life of ZADCO employees life at
work, and after working hours.
13
The Daily Life of a ZADCO Employee in ZIRKU:
Mr. Abdulla Saeed Al Salami
an Electrical Manager who joined ZADCO on 25th March
2006 as planning engineer. He then transferred to the
electrical department as an electrical maintenance
engineer in the electrical operation section to acquire
more experience.
Having gained adequate experience he was then
promoted to his current position as an Electrical Manager
of the electrical section in ZIRKU island.
Describing his career in ZADCO he said that “I benefit from the training facilities in ZIRKU
to master my profession in the electrical maintenance. I have been through different fields
including safety to management to finance to process and other expertise. In ZIRKU there
is an excellent training opportunities and an ideal working place. Experienced employees
are helpful and willing to transfer their valuable knowledge to junior employees and UAE
Nationals.
In my spare time I enjoy the gym. I am an athletic person where gym and sport is my lifestyle
after work. Gym facilities in ZIRKU match highest standards and there is also something for
everyone.
Mr. Ali Hassan Ahmed
Al Hosani
Senior. Mechanical Technician was our next candidate who
gave us a brief profile:
“Soon after my graduation from HTC in Dubai, I joined ZADCO
on 1st July 2000 in the mechanical field. Over the next few
months I have used all available training facilities offered by
ZADCO to develop my skills in the mechanical field. In the
past 15 years since joining ZADCO I have learned valuable
experiences that led me to my current position”.
After work we have many recreational facilities and leisure
facilities to choose from. I personally prefer football having being
a player with Al Sha’ab football club, or sometimes I go to the
gym to keep fit.
I also have time to spend with my friends at any of the many
parks or in the majlis. At ZIRKU there are plenty of facilities to
choose from.
14
Mr. Sultan Abdulwahid
Ahmed Al-Ali
Telecom Engineer who joined ZADCO on 1st November 2011.
Despite his relatively short time with ZADCO he enjoyed his work at
ZADCO. He says: “Joined ZADCO as a fresh graduate having acquired a
communication engineering degree. As a fresh graduate I had a lot of theories
and knowledge that I learned from the university. From day one of my work
in ZADCO, I worked hard to transfer this theory and knowledge into practical
experience. ZADCO provided me with that chance by allowing me to follow a
training program and a dedicated mentor to learn hands-on while working.
I had the opportunity to learn into real telecom systems covering the whole island of
Zirku.
Once I finish work I head to my residence to take some rest and in the evening I
socialize with people I work and live with so that I get to know them better. In Zirku,
there are several different places provided for sports and recreational activities. I always
have time to enjoy sports, go in the park with friends or simply watch T.V. while having a
chat. This way I maintain relationships with my friends and make new ones.
15
Zero Flaring in all
ZADCO operations.
16
Low Energy Costs
Offset Low CO2
Concentrations.
World demand for
oil has been steadily
increasing, currently at the
rate of about 1.5% per year, and it is
estimated to reach 100 Million barrels per
day in10 years.
It is also estimated that by 2020 power
generation demand will exceed 30,000 trillion
watt-hours, resulting in 30 billion ton per annum
of CO2 emission into the atmosphere primarily
from power generation operations.
CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas emitted
through human activities. In 2013, CO2
accounted for about 82% of all greenhouse
gas emissions from human activities.
17
These alarming figures demanded a practical and sustainable solution to reduce release of CO2 into
the atmosphere.
Recycling carbon dioxide (CO2) may offer an answer to the global challenge of significantly
reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from major sites emitters in the near to medium
term.
The new trend in the oil and gas industry is to prevent the release of large quantities of
CO2 into the atmosphere from fossil fuel use in power generation and other industries
the capturing and storing of waste CO2 from large point sources, store and deposit
it where it will not enter the atmosphere, typically an underground geological
formation.
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is the implementation of various techniques for
increasing the amount of crude oil that can be extracted from an oil field.
The most effective way to reduce carbon
dioxide CO2 emissions is to reduce fossil fuel
consumption by re-using CO2 to enhance oil
recovery.
Preserving the environment is the core value of ZADCO culture while undertaking
its operation particularly while ZADCO is embarking on expanding its operations
and increasing its production to almost double the current production.
Hence, ZADCO has ambitious plans, as part of ADNOC group of companies, and
in cooperation with MASDAR so that the latter will supply CO2 to ZADCO to re-use in
its offshore fields. Based on this agreement CO2 will be stored, transported and inject into
offshore fields to improve (EOR).
Use of CO2 is expected to helps to recover additional 30% to 50% of the oil in reservoir which cannot
be recovered using primary and secondary (water flooding) recovery methods.
18
It is estimated that
by 2020 power
generation demand
will exceed 30,000
trillion watt-hours,
resulting in 30 billion
ton per annum of
CO2 emission into
the atmosphere.
By employing this technique
ZADCO will minimize the direct impact on the environment by reducing CO2 emission, increase potential
reserves by recovering more reservoir potential and improve the image of the company in reassuring its
culture of preserving the environment.
Benefits of Using CO2 in
ZADCO SITES
ZADCO is aiming to achieve
several goals by adopting this
new technique:
-
Zero Flaring in all ZADCO operations.
-
Low Energy Costs Offset Low CO2 Concentrations.
-
Pro-active Supportive Industry Attitude.
-
Carbon Capturing & Storage (CCS) Can Significantly Reduce CO2 Emissions To The Atmosphere By 80 -90%.
-
Through Separation, Transportation & Carbon Sequestration, Fossil Fuel Power Plants Can Achieve Near Zero Or Zero Emissions Of Regulated CO2 Regime.

On July 11, 2015, MDLE-TC officially inaugurated
a “PROCESS CONTROL TRAINER MINIPLANT” which was constructed from scratch in the
Instrument training workshop on Zirku.
It was put into service by the Zirku Vice President,
Mr. Faisal Ibrahim Al Haram and Acting Senior
Manager ZR MTN, Mr. Mohamed Bin Sahem.
This mini-plant is another excellent example of
“Project Based Learning” (PBL) that will undoubtedly
accelerate the training of those who use it as it’s
based on hands-on training.
This “SCADA Based Mini-Plant” was fabricated by
the MDLE-TC Instrument Team in the Instrument
training workshop on Zirku with the valuable support
of ZR-FMC and the ZR-GMW workshop. Some of
the components that had been sourced in the plant
itself were used in the construction.
The components of the mini-plant include
Rosemount SMART and Analog transmitters,
Pressure switches, Level switches, a Venturi tube,
an Orifice, a Pneumatic Pressure controller, Control
valves, H2S & Hydrocarbon detector transmitters
26
in addition to Modicon PLC & Iconics HMI with fully
transparent tanks and pipes. It is also equipped with
an add-on facility to include pH and conductivity
measurement at some stage in the future.
Because the concepts being taught and the
instruments being used are the same as those used
in the ZADCO Plants, the developees get hands-on
experience of real job activities.
These include the installation and calibration of
transmitters and exposure to the different types
of switches. Developees will also benefit from an
understanding of “Loop” drawings and “Cause
& Effect” drawings in addition to acquiring basic
troubleshooting skills.
In addition to the Instrument Foundation developees,
this mini-plant can be utilized by Instrument
developees undergoing CAS A2 or CAMS as
well as by the Process operator developees in
the Foundation Program. Furthermore, the “PLC
& HMI” can be used for In-house SCADA system
training given to CAMS and CDP candidates.
ZADCO
Conducts ACPT2
Accommodation
Refurbishment
Upper Zakum Accommodation
platform ACPT-2 is a standalone
accommodation barge with 5 levels
and has been in service for 25 years
accommodating around 375 personnel
with offices, recreation, kitchen and
laundry.
UZ undertook an ambitious in house plan based on
the earlier experience of in-house accommodation
repair works. The team in-charge brainstormed
and engineered a repair scheme which costs much
less, has less impact on boarders and yet yields
high accommodation standard in line with ADNOC
requirements.
Due to the aging factor UZ set a plan to repair
the accommodation to restore the highest living
standards through the following steps:
A pilot repair was implemented successfully in 5
rooms with works taking 49 days to complete at a
minimal cost.
1. A project was launched in 2008 for Sanitary
& Flooring repair at ACPT–2 + Dormitories
conversion at ACPT–1&2 with execution cost
of US$ 38 million (without Barge) with around
100 beds requirement for 28 months but not
materialized due to high cost, huge bedding
requirement and islands being foreseen.
2. Several piecemeal repairs were carried
out thereafter by UZ site team and OSMS
subsequently for the common wet units and
damaged locations mainly.
3. This was also highlighted in the health and
hygiene audit report of Feb-2014. Another
attempt with survey and budgetary quote taken
in 2014 with a cost estimate of US$ 19 million
with around 100 beds requirement with half level
approach in 33 months, but was shelved for
same above reasons.
Having succeeded in the pilot work, the remaining
scope is continuing in batches of small group of
rooms with minimal disturbance and personnel
relocation requirement. The work scope includes
replacement of complex piping network, installing
pre-molded wet units and availing 34 additional
bedding.
The entire project has been managed by site team
with temporary additional resources. The total
project duration is estimated as 37 months at a cost
of US$ 4.13 million.
Moreover, this is achieved without compromising
on the scope requirement, alternatively introducing
innovative solutions and with enhanced flexibility as
living conditions are complex soft issue and a very
sensitive area as can be noted from the ADNOC
welfare guidelines directives.

Tips For Back to
School Season
Summer holiday is over and parents are having to deal with
the usual back to school anxiety from adjusting to new timing,
establishing new routine and lunch box special supplies.
Health advisors are focusing on 4 main areas that are important
when children are going back for a new year at school:
Sleep: school children need to get into a sleep routine a week
before school opening day to suit early bedtime/ early get up.
Diet: fast food and junk food associated with summer holidays
must be replaced with a balanced diet of vegetables, protein
carbs and fruits to provide enough energy during the day and to
think more clearly.
Activities: parents are advised to encourage their children into
more reading, writing and exercises couple of weeks before
they go back to their classes.
Thoughts: children may write about their summer holiday and
the activities and fun they had. They may also outline their
expectations for the upcoming year.
Parents are also advised to do some homework before school
starts to make life easier for them and for their children. These
tasks include:
• A visit to school or school website if it is the first year for the
child to get up-to-date information, see the facilities and
classrooms.
• Purchase books, uniforms and supplies as early as possible.
• Pay fees specially unpaid fees from last year.
• Attend the orientation sessions specially for new children.
• Consider spaces for children homework and plans for 36
