On June 12th, Brass of Peace finished out their year with a wonderful concert on the church lawn. The musicians sounded great
despite the wind constantly blowing their music away!

From Pastor Sarah
It seems as if issue after issue keep cropping up for us to contend with. I imagine this is how it has
been for Christians of every time and place. If you are paying attention with eyes of love, you can’t
help but notice when people are hurting and feel the call to be a part of the healing of the world.
For the past couple of years, America has had a veil lifted as we have seen the way that racism is still
present, still pernicious, and still damaging lives.
As I preached on Sunday, I don’t think it is faithful for us in a mostly white congregation to simply
hope that someone else will solve this nor to say that since we aren’t the ones hurting, it’s not our
problem. If the Good Samaritan – if Jesus – teaches us anything, it’s that grace shows up when we
take on the suffering of others.
We are going to start by educating ourselves. For three weeks in August, I will lead an adult forum
based on the book “The Trouble I’ve Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism” by Drew
Hart. Hart is a theologian, pastor, professor and writer with a PhD from the Lutheran Seminary in
Philadelphia. Please note that this is a change from my original plan to read the book “Between the
World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. I think for Peace at this time The Trouble I’ve Seen will lead to
a more fruitful discussion, though I highly recommend Between the World and Me.
Discussions will take place on Aug 7, 14 and 28 from 9:15 – 10:10 am. I ask that you a) let me know
if you plan to attend by emailing me at pastorsarah@sharingpeace.org. (even if you’ve told me faceto-face, please still email), b) come to the forum having read the entire book and c) do all that you
can to attend all the sessions.
You can buy the book online. If you can’t afford it, please let me know and I can arrange for the
church to buy you a copy.
One final note: beginning a discussion about racism in America in no way implies that we as a
church or as individuals don’t care about police officers and don’t mourn the dead in Dallas. As a
church, we pray for all the terrified yet faithful who protect and serve and I am grateful for police
officers and first responders who daily put their lives on the line. The safety of cops and the safety
of African-Americans should not be something we have to choose between.
I hope you can join the discussion in August and if you can’t but want to be part of further
discussions, please let me know.
This is tough stuff church. I know that, we all know that. God’s grace will lead us,
Council

Financial Report

A Note from Beth
As of July 13, our budget net income
was a negative (loss) of $4,529. This
has improved because we are using
$9 thousand of the AT&T termination fee that we received last year as
income for this year. In addition,
our cash flow has been negative recently as we paid all of the $23 thousand needed to renovate the pipe organ. This renovation is complete
and Adela reports that the organ
plays better than it ever has!

The Rev. Leila Ortiz to Join Synod Staff
We are excited to announce that the Rev. Leila Ortiz will be
joining the staff of the Metro D.C. Synod as the next Assistant to the Bishop. Pr. Ortiz currently serves as the Associate Pastor at
Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg, Md. and is a graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. She will make
a slow transition from Good Shepherd to the synod office over the next
few weeks, and begin full-time at the synod office following the ELCA
Churchwide Assembly in August. Pr. Ortiz will not only be a Voting
Member of the Churchwide Assembly but also a guest preacher there!
This transition comes with the departure of the Rev. Amy Sevimli, who
has been serving faithfully as Assistant to the Bishop for the
past eight years. Look for more information on Pr. Ortiz's new
role in weeks to come.
News from Pastor Mark Olsen
I have been called to serve as the Associate Director for the ELCA's Fund for
Leaders in Mission. The Fund for Leaders (FFL) is an ELCA scholarship
program. We award full- and partial- tuition scholarships to some of the
brightest and most promising future leaders of our church who will be attending our ELCA seminaries. You are probably familiar with the ELCA's
Fund for Leaders because Lamar Bailey, a member of Peace Church whom
you sent to, and supported, at Gettysburg Seminary the past four years, was
one of our FFL full tuition scholarship recipients.
At present, we are awarding about 16 new full tuition scholarships each academic year, another 24
new partial tuition scholarships, and an additional 4 new full tuition diversity scholarships aimed
specifically at raising up leaders who are people of color or whose primary language is other than
English. We also award partial-tuition scholarships for a few seminarians being prepared to serve as
mission developers for new and renewing congregations, as well as for a few seminarians who will
be serving as military chaplains. The ELCA's Fund for Leaders is supported by a dedicated endowment fund. In addition to helping to administer the FFL scholarship program, I will be meeting with
donors and prospective donors (individuals and congregations) to help build the endowment so we
can increase the number of scholarships we award. At present, our endowment is valued at approximately 47 million dollars. Our goal is to eventually raise that to 300 million dollars so as to be able
to fully fund the tuition for every ELCA seminarian who will serve as a rostered leader in our church.
If anyone at Peace would like to learn more about the ELCA's Fund for Leaders, I'd be happy to talk
with them about it.
Finally, when I left Peace in 2006 to become the Director of Admissions at Gettysburg Seminary, I
did so because of my passionate interests in helping to raise up new leaders for our church. It is because of that same passion, and because there is a critical need in our church to raise up new leaders
now, that I have left Shepherd of the Hills in order to once again help the church to meet that need.
The cost of seminary is an obstacle to many and can prevent gifted and promising people from going
to seminary. Likewise, if seminarians graduate with burdensome levels of student loan debt, it can
restrict how and where they are able to serve in our church. Fund for Leaders is looking to help reduce those obstacles for our future leaders.
Thanks, and be at peace! Mark Olsen

Welcome
New Members
Jack and Lynne Fishburn have been
married for 30 years, and have moved here from
New Jersey. They have three adult children who
live in three different states. Jack is interested in
current events, especially economics, and science
and technology, especially computer chess and
quantum mechanics. Lynne loves to quilt and sew,
listen to books on tape and walk the family beagle.
Clem and Pam Chakra:
Maria Parisi
moved from Bowie, Md
where she attended All
Saints Lutheran
Church. She confesses
to being a native plant
geek and gardener.
Hilda Crabtree
was born in the Netherlands and grew up in
Michigan but has spent
most of her life in
Virginia. She has two
sons and two grandsons.
She enjoys quilting and
playing pool.
We prayed for a welcoming church
family within a ten minute drive from
our home, now that we are in our 60s
and 70s, so we could easily participate
in various church activities and events.
Not only did our Lord lead us to the
Peace Church family, but he blessed us
with so much more: Such a beautiful
spiritual worship experience , a kind
caring and helpful Pastor Sarah,
wonderful supportive members and a
rainbow of opportunities for fellowship
and ministry. We’re very happy to be
officially part of the Peace Church
family and we thank and praise you,
Lord.

Kory, Kristin and Dixon
Auch have been worshiping at
Peace this past year after moving to
Alexandria last July. They have
been an Air Force family for over 27
years and Kory will be retiring next
year. Kristin's love for dogs has her
working part-time at a local doggie
daycare. Dixon is a senior at JEB
Stuart HS. Their two older children
live in Philadelphia (Madison) and
Oakton VA (Carter). They were attracted to Peace because of the
warm and friendly people, and a
common Minnesotan upbringing
with Pastor Sarah.

Aaron Mulhollen
has been a resident of the metro
DC area since 2007, and moved
to Lake Barcroft in the summer
of 2014. His wife, Devon, is a
high school history teacher at the
National Cathedral School, and
they have a two year old son,
Harrison. He is currently a
graduate lecturer at George
Mason, working on his
dissertation research on the
geography of intercollegiate
athletics.
Ron Stanley is a
native Virginian, an avid
walker and enjoys landscaping. He has three adult
children and four grandchildren. He is retired
from the United States
Agency for International
Development and also
taught school for ten years.
Kristin Stone says
Clay Baros moved to Arlington in July
last year after his wife took an assignment in
Washington for the US State Department. He
currently works for a small company called
HumanGeo where he attempts to map all
sorts of current events. He is a proud Texan
that likes to grill and learn about photography
in his spare time. He and his wife, Roberta,
are expecting their first child, a boy, in
September. Clay used to live in Gaithersburg
where he attended Pastor Sarah's previous
church, Prince of Peace, and upon moving to
Arlington, was happy to have a church where
he could reunion with such a great pastor.
Peace Lutheran Church was
recommended to her as an
exciting congregation in the
area. She loves all kinds of
swing dancing: Jitterbug,
Hustle, Carolina Shag, DC
Hand Dancing, and West
Coast Swing.
Frank Ballenger,
a life-long resident of Alexandria and a
retired
banker, is a civil war buff
and local historian.
