All Around Alachua Issue 6, Vol. 1 FR EE ! February 2010 FR ! EE YOUR LOCAL EVENT FINDER LOCAL CHARITIES TO SCORE AT KICKBALL TOURNEY What’s more fun than playing kickball? Playing—or watching—kickball for your favorite charity, of course. More than 20 local sponsors, a maximum of 24 teams, and hundreds of young professionals and community leaders will come together on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m., for a daylong kickball tournament at Diamond Sports Park. The fourth annual Champions for Charity kickball -Colleen Raccioppi tournament, presented by the Florida Farm Bureau and hosted by Alachua County Emerging Leaders (ACEL), will give corporate and nonprofit teams a chance to play hard and win big prizes for the local charities of their choice. ACEL expects to donate at least $3,500 to the top winning teams’ chosen charities. “This is one of the most enjoyable charity events I’ve (continues on page 10) Hilltop Animal Hospital Gives Back Hilltop Animal Hospital was established in Alachua over 10 years ago to help fill the veterinary needs of the growing community. Hilltop Animal Hospital has always prided itself on being more than just your veterinarian. To help give back to the community and the animal world, Hilltop Animal Hospital established what has come to be known as their “Stray Fund”. Hilltop Animal Hospital has placed many stray and “We can judge the heart of abandoned animals into new a man by his treatment of forever homes over the past 5 animals.” ~ Immanuel Kant World Shells & Gifts World Shells & Gift Shoppe is a brand new 40 booth store located across the street from the Waldo Farmer’s & Flea Market. (continues on page 9) by Esther Devlin, DVM (Associate Veterinarian) years. Our hospital’s rescue began with a simple decorated coffee can on the front counter for donations. The monies collected in the “donations jar” were designated to help us provide veterinary services for sick and injured stray and feral pets brought to us by clients and Good Samaritans. One of the first pets we took in was a 5 year old brown tabby named “Fat Cat”. Fat Cat had a urinary blockage and the owner could not afford to pay for his treatment and they wanted to euthanize him. His condition required prescription diets and frequent trips to the veterinarian which they simply could not provide for him. Fat Cat became our “clinic kitty” living here at the hospital and serving as a blood donor for those in need. He has been able to save countless lives over the years. Fat Cat was well loved by all of our staff and clients until he recently lost his battle with Gastrointestinal Lymphoma. Another example of how Hilltop Animal Hospital’s Stray (continues on page 3) February 2010 INDEX: *A Better You...........12 *Arts & Crafts.......... 6 *Classifieds............. 18 *Family Fun.............. 4 *Kid’s Corner.......... 20 *Message from Michelle.................. 2 *Sports ................... 14 *Nightlife................ 16 *Valentine’s Day...... 20 *Volunteering...........10 *World Shells ........... 9 All Around Alachua Where can you find our paper? But shouldn’t that be everyday? I could sit here and talk about all the nice sweet things to do with your sweetheart, and places to go, and what to do. Instead, I decided to say something a little different. Don’t you love walking on the beach with your sweetheart hand-in- hand? Or lounging around by one of the many springs in our area? How about going for a nice peaceful walk in one of the parks and enjoying the beauty that surrounds you? I’m sure you have compared your sweetheart to the beauty of the sunset and noticed the way the sun shines through the trees and hits his or her face and hair. I am sure you think you would do anything to freeze that moment in time. Wouldn’t you do anything to assure these moments last? What happens when these moments are gone? The protective nature we have for the ones we love is also the protective nature we should have for “nature”. Protecting what surrounds us is, in reality, protecting those we love. If you take a moment to sit and think of all the times you enjoyed the outside with your sweetheart and made wonderful memories, you will realize one of the major factors in those situations were your surroundings. It does not always have to take a ton of time to take care of these things. It can be something as simple as recycling, picking up trash that you see as you are walking, or speaking up when your voice can make a difference. It can be as simple as hooking your small appliances to a power strip and getting in the habit of turning it off when you leave the house- same goes with turning down the heat and the air. Many people do not realize that even when their laptops and such are turned off they still drain electricity. Switch them off and save that power. Use reusable bags at the grocery store instead of plastic bags. They are .99 cents in most places. Or if you go to the goodwill you can pick them up for .50 cents. Show your sweetheart how much you really cherish those moments you spend together walking on the beach or in the parks. Plant a tree or flowers this Valentine’s. Show each other every day how much you love every moment and every memory you have shared with the one you love. Start small and with something you both can enjoy. You can buy trees or plants quiet cheap at Lowe’s, any nursery or out at the flea market. Make your natural surroundings reflect the beauty and love you feel for one another and allow for a future of great memories. February 2010 All Around Alachua FAMILY FUN Sunshine State Archaeological Society -Michelle Wescott The Sunshine State Archaeological Society (SSAS) was founded in August 2002 to help promote the study of archaeology and to encourage the study of curation of prehistoric artifacts. They also encourage the interaction between professional and amateur archaeologists. The SSAS is affiliated with the Central States Archaeological society. They are a non-profit organization with no salaried officers or employees. This is why the fairs they sponsor and events they host are so important to each and every community. The SSAS sponsors The Gainesville Artifact and Fossil Show that is held in June, as well as the Alachua Stone Age Fair that was held in January. They also host educational lectures dealing with regional archaeology. The 22nd Annual Gainesville Artifact and Fossil Show is Saturday June 5, 2010. It will be held at the Clarion Inn & Conference Center. Be sure to keep checking with us for more information about the Artifact and Fossil Show. A v o c a t i o n a l Archaeologists are important in Florida because many people do not know that the majority of prehistoric artifacts found in Florida reside in private collections. Private collectors are an essential part of the solution for preserving Florida’s past. They have the interest, time, and financial resources necessary to discover, preserve, and protect a stunning array of stone, bone, shell, wood, and ceramic prehistoric artifacts that record an essential portion of Florida’s pre-history. These artifacts provide the only tangible evidence of the people who lived here first. While the public may enjoy a museum exhibit of projectile points once or twice a year, new specimens are rarely rotated in for public observation. The Gainesville Artifact and Fossil Show and the Alachua Stone Age Fair provide venues where many privately-owned and locally-collected artifact collections are on display for the benefit of the general public. Box 361 Melrose 475-2177 Issue 6, Vol. 1, Page 8 Winter Fine Art Fair at Tioga Once again the tents will go up and the artisans lay out their creations for the Tioga Winter Fine Art Fair. This is the third year for this cozy festival, and despite high winds last year, has continued to do very well. It starts, unusually, Friday evening, with music and food, allowing patrons to wander around the lighted booths and preview the show. This show, like the long-established Art Festival at Thornebrook, is run by the Gainesville Fine Arts Association, a local group of wonderful and talented artists and craftspeople. They put on a class act, and have a wonderful Art Around Alachua- Hoggetown Medieval Faire – From the Inside! The Hoggetown Medieval Faire is a fantastic journey into a time of lords and ladies, jousting and juggling, armor and art. Yet, as a visitor, you only get to see the outside – the face of the show that everyone wants you to see. What’s it like on the underside? What efforts are made to make this illusion? How does it all come together? First of all, this fair would never happen without the incredible efforts of Linda Piper, Director of the Gainesville Arts & Cultural Affairs Department. She runs this show, as well as the Gainesville Downtown Fine Arts Festival in November, and works with the vendors, performers, city police and park authorities to get everything organized and ready. She is a smiling face throughout the fair, helping to put out figurative fires and getting problems solved as they appear. Vendors and performers apply to be in the show the previous fall, and they are scrutinized to make sure their wares and shows conform to the standards required for the faire. They also need to make sure all participants are ‘period’, i.e., making sure they are medieval or renaissance in nature, design, and appearance. That is why all the tents look like they are made out of natural materials, rather than white plastic, and the vendors dress in corsets and kilts, rather than jeans and flipflops. Now to the days before opening morning! Hundreds of vendors and performers work for days to set up the structures that set the stage for the illusion. The sound stages for performances, the food vendor stalls, the tents and stalls that house arts, crafts, face-painting, mead sales, and various other well-known offerings. There is a camaraderie among the vendors, especially those that come back year after year – perhaps you only see them once a year, perhaps you do several shows together, but they are old friends, and part of a group that knows what it’s like to be part of this special group. The morning of the faire dawns, and everyone is anxious and excited, ready for the show to start. The final touches are put on displays, costumes, and personas. A little more fluff to the matted hair for the medieval bag lady; a little more push for the tight corset; a little more mud and straw on the boots for that authentic look. Then the trumpets sound, and the gates are opened! We all put on our brightest and friendliest faces – knowing that most folks will walk right on by first thing, and see most of the fair before settling down to any actual purchases. My own spot is usually right across from the camel and elephant rides, so I get to spend the day listening to the dulcet tones of ‘Camel, camel, camel, camel, camel! Get your camel rides! Get your Elephant rides right here!’ , the delicate notes of a harpist drifts from the nearby performance tent, and the screeches of children, some delighted, others less so. I enjoy the fair because I get to see lots of folks who are interested in history, and I can speak in a cheesy Irish accent all weekend, and no one laughs at me. I get to see fantastic costumes, hilarious performances, and sexy kilts. The end of the day brings tiredness – it’s been a long day in the sun (or the cold), and that Irish accent is beginning to fade a bit to English, which is easier for me to maintain. The costumes look a bit wilted, and that cup of mead is looking really good. You hope for some Christy Nicholas selection of pottery, paintings, quilts and photography to dazzle your senses. The show runs from 5pm to 9pm on Friday night, and then from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday. There are 70 artists to browse, and many charitable organizations to patronize. Do stop by the Sebastian Ferraro Foundation information booth, a local charity looking to raise money to create a children’s hospital in the area. The show is set in and behind the fantastic Town of Tioga shopping center, which has many businesses to cater to your needs. Christy Nicholas last minute shoppers, or the ‘bebacks’ (Oh, I’ll come back and get it on my way out) to stop by for a purchase, but usually they’re tired as well, and make a bee-line for the exit. Many are carrying sleeping toddlers, or dragging cranky kids, perhaps wrapped up in a jacket as the sun starts going down and the temperature starts dropping. Then, more work for us – we’ve got to start putting away the inventory, batten down the hatches, and keep the tent from being blown away in the night. By that time, we are dragging our feet, hands, and any other appendage that moves. With aching feet, we make our way to our cars, hidden among the sea of parked vehicles, seemingly in Timbuktu. We collapse at our homes, and realize that in just 8 hours, we’ve got to wake up and do it all again. We love doing the fair, but it is a LOT of work. We love that the Grand Illusion works and that people enjoy it – and enjoy coming back year after year. It is a fantastic escape from the stresses and pains of real life, and it is worth it to see the enchanted faces of children and adults as they walk through the fantasy of the Faire. The kickball tournament is the centerpiece of our fundraising efforts. To date, we’ve donated nearly $25,000 to local charities and look forward to adding to that this year.” Kickball players, sponsors and fans will enjoy music, door prizes and more. Delicious food from tournament sponsors will be provided for players, and additional concessions will be available. Attendees may bring food and beverages, but absolutely no glass is permitted in the park. Admission to the event is free for players and sponsors; spectators will pay a park-entry fee of $2 for adults and $1 for children. Competition during the 2009 kickball tournament was fun and fierce, and the first place winner was Gainesville’s Junior Chamber of Commerce, or Jaycees, which earned an impressive $2,000 for Tyler’s Hope Foundation, a Gainesville nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and finding a cure for the neurological movement -Colleen Raccioppi disorder dystonia. Rick Staab, president of InterMed Biomedical Services Inc., and a Tyler’s Hope board member, said the event brought muchneeded publicity to a good cause. “We feel the Champions for Charity kickball tournament is a fantastic event that brings awareness to many important charities in our community,” said Staab. “Tyler’s Hope for a Dystonia Cure is so grateful for the opportunity to play in such a fun event and for ACEL, who continues to make the event and our community better.” There are still a few spots available for teams that want to participate in this year’s tournament. Corporate businesses, nonprofits or even groups of friends may sign up as a team by downloading the team entry form from www. acelchampionsforcharity.com. Eat a fruit or vegetable with every meal and snack (These are the carbs you want to eat every day. Fruits and veggies are low-carb, low-calorie, and full of nutrients to help you achieve your goals.) Eliminate all processed carbohydrates (Pasta, bread, white rice, crackers, cookies, pastries, etc.) Use healthy fats and oils freely such as olive oil, coconut oil, raw nuts and seeds, avocados and omega-3 fish oils (Your body needs healthy fats to get rid of fat!) Eliminate caloriecontaining beverages (Soda – yes, even, diet soda, fruit juice, sports drinks, etc.) Drink a minimum of half your bodyweight in ounces of water each day – If you weigh 150lbs, drink 75 ounces of water each day (Drinking water will help you lose fat and is necessary for your body’s daily functions.) Take a high-quality multivitamin and omega-3 fish oil (Vitamins are like insurance and fish oil caps are proven to help you lose fat and prevent many diseases.) 9. Keep a food journal (If you know what you put in your mouth every day, you’ll be more conscious of what you’re eating) 10. Follow these guidelines 90 percent of the time and “splurge” the other 10 percent (It takes 90 percent compliance to reach your goals) The next step is to use resistance training. Resistance training includes body weight exercises, dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, bands, odd objects (kegs, sandbags, tires, etc.) and many other similar tools that create resistance that the body must overcome. However, rather than using typical resistance training methods, I suggest taking it one step further and performing metabolic resistance training or cardio strength training. This type of resistance training uses the same tools mentioned before but combines resistance exercises in a format to create a fast-paced workout that provides cardiovascular and strength benefits. Typically, metabolic resistance training or cardio strength training consists of moderate-to-heavy weights performed as supersets, circuits, timed sets or complexes with little-to-no rest in order to create a metabolic “disturbance” within the body. There are numerous studies showing the benefits of metabolic resistance training and cardio strength training. When combined with a proper nutritional program, metabolic resistance training burns more fat and builds more muscle than diet or exercise alone. And both methods are far superior than aerobic exercise (steady-state cardio such as jogging, biking, etc.). At Underground Fitness Revolution, we provide the nutritional guidelines and support our members need to reach their goals. In addition, we utilize training programs that include metabolic resistance training and a variety of interval training methods to assist with fat loss while increasing fitness levels and providing cardiovascular benefits. If losing fat, gaining muscle and being in the best shape of your life is your goal, join Underground Fitness Revolution now. Our next Orientation and Grocery Store Tour is scheduled for Saturday, February 27 and our next phase of training begins March 1. Not sure if we are the place for you? Try us out for free! The School of Theatre and Dance’s production is directed and adapted for the stage by Yanci Bukovec. In creating the adaption Professor Bukovec wanted to make the play available to everyone. “This performance adaption was created for a particular theatre and a particular audience in mind.” This production is unique as it highlights the vocal and Nightlife Event Details speech dynamics of this style of theatre. This adaption was made not with the scholars and purists in mind. “Some sections have a very contemporary feel, and then we switch to a more stylized feel,” Bukovec said. “In choosing the classics we are able to develop the vocal and speech skills of the actors so they can leave with a well rounded education.” Aided by oracles, a chorus, and one of the greatest tragic figures in all of dramatic literature, the play focuses on Oedipus’ act of discovery and its consequences and explores -Michelle Wescott THE OPERA SHOW Glamour. MORRIS DANCE CLASSES Morris is an English traditional folk dance form. How old it is, no one knows for certain, but Shakespeare used morris dancing in a few plays, and it was considered old even in his day. Modern morris includes several different types (called “traditions”) of dance, all named for different regions of the British Isles; Cotswold Morris from the south, Border Morris from the west, Molly Dancing from the southeast, and Northwest Morris from (you guessed it) the northwest. Many people also include Longsword, Rapper (sword), Clog, and Garland dancing in the term “morris”.
