Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mission Statement
With the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we
the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe,
seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community
within and without our parish.
From the Desk of Deacon Anthony
June 19, 2016
Who Do You Say That I Am?
In today’s Gospel, St. Peter, once again steps up to the plate when Jesus asks: “Who do you say that I am?” St. Peter answers, “The Christ of God.” St. Peter’s life was forever changed, just as our lives are changed with the mark, the sign of
the Cross, at our Baptisms.
St. Peter’s answer also became the apostles’ mission. As Jesus tells them, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny
himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
More than likely we are already taking up our crosses, without knowing what to call it, without putting a label on it. It
humbly means commitment and sacrifice for the wants and needs of others. It is about living for others. It is about taking
our share of responsibility for our families and for our neighbors. It is about doing the kinds of things that Christ would do,
wherever and whenever we can.
St. Paul reminds us that there are no more distinctions, male or female, Jew or Greek, because we are One in Christ. Still,
on this Father’s Day, it’s worth remembering; “You’re unlikely to see the father in God, unless you see something of God in
the father.” How will our children see God? How do we see God?
How many of us know families who have lost their children? Perhaps, to drugs or alcohol, to the streets, to jail, to bad decisions? And, isn’t the lament often that they wished they had spent more time with their children? And so, let me ask the
question: Are we spending enough time with our children? We’re talking about “quantity time” when our family gets to see
and feel how much we love them and care about them. It is a fact that children don’t care about how much you know (or
even earn) until they know how much you care.
Let us continue to pray for Understanding and Reconciliation, for Discovery and Peace. Let us pray for the fathers who have
gone before us, and continue to watch over us, and are in the presence of the Lord.
Let us celebrate and thank Our Heavenly Father for the gift of Fathers!
Thank you, Dad! Happy Father’s Day! Amen.
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Zechariah 12:10-11, 13:1
Gospel: Luke 9:18-24
This first reading covers the familiar topics of mourning, loss,
sin and repentance. The irony of people mourning someone
whom they have pierced is not lost on us. Yet God “pours
out” on his people “a spirit of grace and petition.” We should
be humbled by His love!
So much is covered in this Gospel reading! The perception
of Christ by others, Peter’s recognition of Him as the Christ,
His future suffering, and the trial of those who follow Christ
are all covered in just seven verses! The complete faith in
Christ that He asks of His disciples reminds us of the second
reading - that we belong to Him and are heirs as a result.
Second Reading: Galatians 3:26-29
Next Week’s Readings
13 Sunday in Ordinary Time
We are made up of a very diverse group of people. Yet this
passage from Galatians casts aside the differences of those
who are faithful; for we all belong to Christ - which makes
all of us children of Abraham and heirs to God’s promise.

The Salvation Army Clothing Drop Containers have been
moved to the right of the large maintenance garage in
the upper parking lot. If you find both of the containers
filled, please do not leave clothing outside where the elements and animals can get to them. Please bring them
to another container in town or bring them back when
there is room. You could also try the new Goodwill storefront at 19 Mill Road in Eastchester. Call 337-3749 to see

Zeppole and Raffles at the Carnival
I want to thank all the volunteers that worked in the
Zeppole & Parish Raffle Tent during the Carnival. It was
great having such a committed team of helpers and we
had a lot of fun in addition to making a good profit for
the Parish.
Thanks to Ms. Katy Feeney and her helpers from CCD and
Staff in selling Bonanza and Raffle tickets. Just a reminder that we are still selling both. With the Bonanza Lottery, you can keep winning each week until December 8;
so buy another ticket a chance to win one of our weekly
cash prizes. For the Parish Raffle, we will pull winners on
August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, after the special
7:30 PM Mass at The Church of the Assumption.
My personnel thanks to some parishioners from my
former Parish of St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of
the Lake/Mt. Carmel in Carmel for helping to make 830
pounds of dough and frying it: Mr. Pat Stellacci, Mr. & Mrs.
Theresa & Richard West, Rich Ambrosio - our facilities
manager, Fr. Tom Kreiser from Yorktown Heights, and Fr.
Paul here at IC/AoL. All the hard work and support were
appreciated. To the army of volunteers who signed up
for all the hours, a sincere word of thanks.

Religious Education
Re-Registration:
Memorialization of new technology:
•
We are well ahead of previous years’ re-registration
numbers at this point in the year, and we anticipate
our enrollment next year to be equal to or more than
last year – about 600 children.
•
The re-registration form is available online and can
be submitted electronically at the web site:
www.iaparish.org.
There is an opportunity for families to memorialize the new
technology we are purchasing for the CCD Domains. What
it would “look like” is that every time the TV/iPad is turn
on or “awakened”, your memorialization would appear for
the children to pray for you and your loved ones. More information will follow, but feel free to ask Fr. Sorgie or Miss
Feeney about this if you have any questions.

From the Parish Nurse
If you have questions about any aspect
of our Catholic Church and Faith, just
drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.
42. Does the church allow an outdoor Catholic
wedding Mass or Ceremony, or is it left to the discretion of the local Bishop?
Catholics must be married in a church before their
proper pastor, or the proper pastor of one of them, if both
are Catholics. That is the norm. Most of that is dispensable by the bishop - to be married before another priest
in a different parish, to be married before a non-Catholic
minister, rabbi or other in their religious building, and,
theoretically, to be married in some outdoor place.
Clearly, the most fitting way for Catholics to be married
is at a Nuptial Mass in a church. Even for a Catholic marrying someone of another religion, the most fitting way
is the Marriage Rite (not a Mass) in a Catholic church,
before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. However, if
one party is not Catholic and wants it somewhere else, the
details should be discussed with the pastor, who will take
the matter to the bishop. This should be done before any
arrangements are made. The validity of a marriage of a
Catholic depends on doing this!
Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Even so, if diagnosed and removed while it
is still thin, it is almost 100% curable. Melanoma
is a malignant tumor that starts in the melanocytes.
These are the cells that produce the pigment melanin and
it gives our skin, eyes and hair their color. There are several
different types of melanomas; some are in situ or “in one site”
which means that the tumor is more localized and is therefore
more easily treated. Other, more invasive forms of melanoma,
are more difficult to treat. Melanoma most frequently occurs in
the trunk, legs, and arms, and in the scalp of men.
The first sign of Superficial Spreading Melanoma, the
most common type of melanoma, is the appearance of a flat
or slightly raised discolored patch with irregular borders. It
can be somewhat geometrical in form. The color varies: tan,
white, brown, black, red, blue or white. Sometimes you may
spot changes in an older mole, or a new mole may develop.
Lentigo Maligna is similar to the superficial spreading melanoma as it also remains close to the skin for quite a while. It
also is usually a flat or slightly elevated tan, or brown discoloration. This is however, an invasive form of melanoma.
Acral Lentiginous Melanoma also spreads superficially before it penetrates more deeply. It is different from the previous
two types of melanoma in that is usually appears as a black or
brown discoloration under the nails, on the soles of the feet or
palms of the hands. It is the most common melanoma found in
African-Americans and Asians.
Nodular Melanoma is usually invasive by the time it is first
diagnosed. The malignancy is recognized when it becomes a
bump. The color is most often black, but occasionally is blue,
grey, white, brown, tan, or even skin tone.
Because skin cancer can take on many of the same characteristics as benign, or non-cancerous skin lesions, any changes in
existing lesions or moles, new lesions, and non-healing wounds
should be examined by your physician.

the nearest Roman Catholic Church and its Mass schedule,
you can visit the Mass Times site on the Internet:
www.masstimes.org

possible.
The next scheduled day for our Parish is Tuesday, June
