F
ast all-season construction was a major
consideration in fabrication of the ABB
facility in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania.
With an erection schedule of only 21-days,
Fabcon was able to keep up with the
fast-paced project to build the 60,560
square-foot building.

“The Fabcon precast
panels (for the ABB
project) provided for a
more durable exterior
without perimeter
building column
obstructions allowing
the client a more usable
space. Closing-in the
building quickly and
efficiently during the
winter months resulted
in overall cost savings relative
to alternate exterior building materials.”

he original preliminary design
scenario of metal deck and steel
joist for the AMC Theatre was
modified to a precast frame employing
a wide variety of precast components.
By utilizing precast components made
under controlled plant conditions, this
project was able to be constructed
during harsh winter months, which
could not have been achieved using
the originally designed materials.
Further, the economic feasibility of
utilizing precast at the roof elevation
was not realized and therefore,
Hollowcore Inc. included, under their
scope of work, the design, supply and
installation of the metal deck and
joist materials for the roof structure.
This enabled Hollowcore Inc. to
provide the entire shell of the
theatre. This unique situation
eliminated a lot of coordination and
potential conflicts that could have
arisen by having multiple subtrades on site simultaneously.

Condell Medical Center
Libertyville, Illinois
L
oad-bearing precast concrete
panels were specified to clad the
facade of the Condell Medical Center
in Libertyville, Illinois for several
reasons. By supporting their own
load, the panels reduced the slab load
and minimized interior columns,
saving material costs on both the slab
edging and interior. Also, designers
were unsure during which time of the
year the facade would be constructed.
Using precast panels ensured that we
could do it in any weather. If you can
generate repetition or have to build in
winter conditions, precast makes
a lot of sense.
Technical Notes:
• Construction of 200,000
sq. feet of new space
• Renovation of 60,000 sq. feet
• 14,000-square-foot emergency and intensive
care unit
• 14,000-square-foot birthing center
• 30,000-square-foot surgery department,
radiology renovation
• 25,000 square feet of administrative spaces

Marietta Structures of Marietta Ohio
fabricated 39,200 Sq. Ft. comprised
of 592 pieces of architectural
precast. The panels were 8" thick of
colored architectural concrete made
from a blend of white and gray
cement, pigments, black and buff
aggregates. The panels were
finished with a light and heavy
sandblast to achieve two distinctive
finishes for the panels. Granite
medallions were added to the
precast panels to accent the exterior
facade.

PCI Plant Certification Facts
F
or PCI Certified Precast Plants quality assurance is an
absolute requirement. Two unannounced audits are
performed annually on each plant by an independent
engineering firm. Inspections include steps taken by each
plant to ensure quality. Plants are required to follow the
PCI Quality Assurance Manual MNL 116. To learn more about
PCI Plant Certification for your specification requirements
