Curé of Ars R. C. Church . 2323 Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY 11566 Telephone (516) 623-1400 Fax (516) 623-1107 www.cureofarschurch.net E A S T E R Curé of Ars -2- Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Happy Easter!!!!! Today we celebrate the fact that our Savior rose from the dead after taking our sins upon the cross and being crucified in our place. As a result, we will never find the bones of Jesus because His body resurrected from the tomb. Why did God do this? Because he wanted to conquer sin and death for us and has done so through the death and resurrection of His Son. Death will not have the last say over us. Jesus promises that we too will rise, share in his resurrection and live eternally with Him if we follow him, love him and serve him in this life by serving one another. St. Paul says to all Christians that if Jesus Christ didn’t rise from the dead, then we are the most pitiable of people. Why? Because that would mean we were worshipping some dead guy and the reality is that we’re not because Jesus was resurrected! Praise God!! This is cause to rejoice on many levels. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: Next Sunday, April 3rd, is Divine Mercy Sunday. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, join us next week from 2:30pm to 4:30pm in the church as we praise God’s eternal love and His abundant mercy as a parish family. During the prayer service which I will lead, the Eucharist will be exposed, we will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and have veneration of the image of Jesus as the Divine Mercy (which you can see in the sanctuary) and the relic of St. Faustina. In the apparition of Jesus to St. Faustina, in 1931, he gives us the Divine Mercy Novena to pray, and like all Novenas it is 9 days. The Novena began on Good Friday and it is very unique, because with this Novena you are praying for God’s intentions, not your own. Jesus gave St. Faustina the intentions that He would like us to pray for each day. It is a most beautiful and selfless prayer. There are red Novena pamphlets at the doors of the church in case you did not get one. A huge and merciful gift given us on Divine Mercy Sunday is that we can receive a plenary indulgence. Jesus promised this to us through St. Faustina when He reminded us of his great mercy. What is a plenary indulgence? It is the total remission (washing away) of temporal punishment due to sin. When I confess my sin with a sincere and contrite heart, I am totally forgiven, but the temporal (the here and now) damage that was done to others (and myself) as a result of my sin remains. That’s why we do penance to try to repair the damage we have done. That is what purgatory is about. That’s why a plenary indulgence is a merciful gift from the Lord. How can one receive it? Here are the requirements: One must go to mass and receive Holy Communion on the day of the feast, April 3rd, go to confession within 10 days of the feast (either before or after), pray the apostles creed (which is your profession of faith), take a few moments to reflect on the mercy you have received in your life, pray one Our Father and Hail Mary for the Pope’s intention and lastly, have a desire to be freed from the attachment to sin. Next weekend there will be bottles of newly blessed Easter water distributed to all our parishioners during the recessional song. Why? Out of the side of Jesus’ body flowed blood and water after he was pierced with a lance by the roman soldier. Jesus tells us through St. Faustina that the blood reminds us of his presence in the Eucharist -- how He feeds us. The water reminds us of how He cleanses us through the waters of our baptism and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This purifies us and makes us righteous before God. Therefore, may the Holy Water serve as a reminder of the goodness of our God and I invite you to use this sacramental to invoke God’s healing, protection, mercy and love upon you, your loved ones and everything you own. May this holy water aid you on your journey to sainthood. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, following in the footsteps of the Mercy Popes, Saint John Paul II and the beloved Benedict XVI, embraces the Message of Mercy with devout enthusiasm. He says: “Hearing the word mercy changes everything, it changes the world! A bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just.” That’s why he has declared this the Year of Mercy. See the bulletin for more details. HEALING MASS: On Friday, April 8th, I will be celebrating a Healing Mass at 7:30pm in the church. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00pm. If you or someone you know is sick physically, emotionally or spiritually, please bring them to the Mass. Following the liturgy, everyone will have the opportunity to be prayed over and blessed with the Blessed Sacrament. Please join us. UPDATED WORK REPORT: Lastly, in the bulletin you will find an updated progress report on the work being done in our restoration campaign, letting you know how much of the work has been completed. Have a great week walking with your Lord, encountering His love and mercy. Remember, with Him in you, you can do the unthinkable, unimaginable and even forgive what you think is unforgivable. Peace & Blessings, Our Lady’s Rosary Makers Ministry Curé of Ars -4- Only 22 Candles Left Have you ever considered lighting a Perpetual Candle for your loved ones? This candle remains lit every day for one year. This candle’s perpetual light, which is seen by God and burns brightly before Him each day, is a constant intercession for your intention. The priests and parishioners will also pray for your intention during our Sunday and weekday Masses here at Curé of Ars. See the forms in the rack hanging on the wall by the Perpetual Candles in the lobby of the church. The candle can also be purchased for any prayer intention: conversions, memorials, in thanksgiving or for special intentions / occasions. Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 Eucharistic Adoration Jesus I inviting you to spend some quiet time with Him. Come spend half an hour or one hour with Him each week. Time spent in Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is special heart-to-heart time with Jesus. It will change your life. Please contact Pat Krug at 359-7404 to share an hour with Him and sign up for the time slot of your choice. Jubilee Year of Mercy - Plenary Indulgence In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, there is a huge gift that the Church is offering us. It is the plenary indulgence for our own sins (or we can ask the Lord to apply it to the soul of a deceased love one). What is a Plenary Indulgence? It is the total remission of temporal punishment due to sin. In confession we are forgiven our sins, but the damage left behind due to our sin still remains. This is why we do penance, because it helps to repair the damage we have done through our sin. Purgatory is the repairing of the damage due to sin that we have not completed here on earth. The Saints did a lot of penance (offered up sacrifices not only for their sins but for all sinners). They did penance over and above what was needed for their own sin. Our Lady, though sinless, lived a penitential life herself. All these spiritual sacrifices and penance are stored in a place referred to as the treasury of merit and through the apostolic succession from Peter, it is the Roman Catholic Church alone that has the authority to withdraw merit from this treasury and dispense it to believers in this life or in purgatory to atone for some or all of their venial sin. This it does through the granting of Catholic indulgences. Bishop Murphy has designated four places of worship within the Diocese as places of pilgrimage. Each pilgrimage site has a specific day each and every week during the Jubilee Year when priests and others will be available to receive pilgrims who come to enter through the Holy Door to confess their sins, pray before the Blessed Sacrament, join in devotions and receive the Lord’s blessing in Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The following is the weekly schedule at Jubilee Churches for the Year of Mercy: Tuesdays - Cathedral of St. Agnes, 1 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570 Mass (12:10pm) Exposition and Adoration, Confessions Chaplet of Mercy Benediction (4:00pm) Thursdays - Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary, 168 Hill St., Southampton, NY 11968 Mass (12:00pm) Confessions, Exposition and Adoration Tours of the Basilica (as arranged) Devotions to Divine Mercy in Spanish (3:00pm) Benediction (4:00pm) Wednesdays - Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, 440 West Neck Rd, Huntington, NY 11743 Tours of Seminary (1:00pm) Rosary (1:45pm) Exposition and Adoration (2:00pm) Confessions (2:00-4:00pm) Vespers and Benediction (4:00pm) Saturdays - Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, 258 Eastport Manor Rd, Manorville, NY 11949 Mass (11:30am) Exposition and Adoration Confessions Chaplet of Mercy Benediction (4:00pm) -5- Curé of Ars Welcome! Our pastor, Fr. Charles Mangano, his brother priests, Fr. Henry Leuthardt, Fr. Zachary Callahan, and our Pastoral Team welcome you to Curé of Ars. If you are visiting us for the first time, you are our honored guests and we pray that you will consider making Curé of Ars your church home. We are here to assist you in your spiritual growth and maturity as together we give glory to God through our worship, prayer and service in the name of Jesus Christ. We are committed to the fullness of Roman Catholic teaching and to the promise of salvation that the Church offers to all believers. May God accomplish a great work in you among us. Mission Statement We welcome all and exclude none, as we are inspired by the wisdom of our patron, St. John Vianney, the Cure of Ars, who said: "This is our glorious duty, to pray and to love." Therefore, we are committed to continue the mission of Jesus Christ, to proclaim the Gospel and love one another as He loves us. Values Statement Empowered with the strength given to us by the Sacraments, we practice generosity in faith, hope and love. Vision Statement As we move forward, prioritized by our parishioners’ input, we will focus on liturgy and worship, faith formation, family, communication, and service. Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 Stewardship It is everything we do after we say we believe Tithing: God’s Plan for Giving Stewardship - A Way of Life Tithing Income Palm Sunday March 20, 2016 $19,666.50 Palm Sunday March 29, 2015 $22,416.00 Kids for Kids March 20, 2016 $ 228.00 Pastor’s Comments - Sometimes people who tithe may start to lose trust and move away from tithing, but when they remember how good it is to tithe they always return with more commitment than ever before. Comments on Tithing from the pews - “Tithing When I thought about it for a while I said, ’How can I NOT tithe?’ I began and it has changed my life, especially my spiritual life.” - A Parishioner Bulletin Reflection - In the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Colossians that they have been raised with Chrst, exhorting them to “be intent on the things above rather than on things of earch.” We, too, have been raised with Christ. Let us rejoice and be glad! Living Stewardship - We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who, like St. Paul, give witness for the “good news” of salvation, especially through extending mercy to others. Photos Needed! PLEASE NOTE: 9 AM Daily Mass The parish’s 90th anniversary committee needs your help to update the past 15 years of Curé’s history. We are looking for pictures of Fr. Charles’ installation Mass as pastor in 2004 and photos of the following parish pilgrimages: Poland – 2006, Medjugorje – 2006, Israel – 2008, Ars and Lourdes – 2001, Italy and Pier Giorgio Frassati’s home in Pollone – 2015, Holy Land – 2015. Please send your pictures to the rectory (they will be returned to you), Attn: lamercogliLouise Mercogliano or email to ano@optonline.net. Thanks so much. Until further notice, the 9am weekday mass will be held in the Divine Mercy Chapel due to interior restoration work in the church. Website As a reminder, in case you forget to pick up your weekly bulletin, it is on our website. It also has a listing of all our upcoming events. Our web address is www.cureofarschurch.net. Will You Serve? As you know we have an ALTAR SOCIETY that takes care of our altar linens. They are a blessing to us but they are in need of assistance. Therefore, the altar society is inviting ladies and gentlemen who would be willing to iron the linens used at Holy Mass. It would require 30-40 minutes of work at home every 6 weeks. If you are willing to serve the Lord through this ministry of ironing, please call Mary at (516) 785-5262. Mary will even invite you to her home to give you a lesson on how to iron the altar linens. Please pray about this, let the Lord lead you. Partaking in a ministry does not mean you have to do it for the rest of your life but there are many who stay for years because of the joy of serving the Lord. Let Him lead you. -6- Curé of Ars Mass Intentions for the Week of March 26th Easter Sunday, March 27 2016 Pray For Our Sick Names submitted by immediate family members only will remain on this list for 6 weeks. THIS MAN GOD RAISED ON THE THIRD DAY…” (Acts 10:39-40). Recall your lowest moments. What made them so terrible? Loss? Humiliation? Death? Suffering? Torment? I can remember my lowest points and what I needed to hear. It was simple: good news. I yearned for good news. Good news, not just for me, but for those I loved who suffered, who died, who were buried. Well, here it is. Here’s the best news of all: we’re not alone in our suffering. God is there with us, in the thick of it, torn and buried. But now the tomb is empty. He is raised, and so are we, and so are all those who live and die in Christ. To be loved like this by the God who created us, to be embraced and lifted like this for eternity? Such very, very good news. The Lord is risen! He is risen indeed! God says, “My saving power will rise on you like the sun and bring healing like the sun’s rays.” Malachi 4:2. You can overcome pornography and other unhealthy sexual behaviors with a professional, science-based Catholic program called: RECLAIM Sexual Health. (Visit their site www. ReclaimsexualHealth.com). Get help or Help Others. Private and Anonymous Online Help 24/7. It is the latest Brain Science cutting-edge technology. Personalized support and Faith Focused. The Brain Science of Change & Theology of the Body is God’s way out. In 1 Corinthians 10:13 it says, “No trial has come to you but what is human, God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial He will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.” Pornography is an addiction. It enslaves the soul and deep shame is connected to it but healing and recovery is possible. If you or someone you know has a porn addiction, please log onto the their website at: www.IntegrityRestored.com, designed for those who struggle with pornography use and those who may know of someone who is struggling. Here you will learn about the pornography epidemic in America and how porn affects men, women, children and teens. You will learn about the addictiveness of pornography and the recovery process. Wives will learn how to help their husbands as well as how to find healing for their own emotional pain (feelings of hurt, betrayal, etc.). The website takes a unique approach by incorporating Catholic spirituality into the recovery process. Porn reduces the human person to an object for one’s selfish pleasure which is in direct opposition to the beauty of the whole human person that God created in His image and likeness, never to be lusted after but to be loved as a whole person: body, mind and soul. This spiritual support group is for men and women who experience homosexual attractions and desire to lead a chaste life in accordance with authentic Catholic Church teaching. The five goals of Courage are: 1. Live chaste lives in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality. (Chastity) 2. Dedicate one’s life to Christ through service to others, spiritual reading, prayer, meditation, individual spiritual direction, frequent attendance at Mass, and the frequent reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. (Prayer and Dedication) 3. Foster a spirit of fellowship in which all may share thoughts and experiences, and so ensure that no one will have to face the problems of homosexuality alone. (Fellowship) 4. Be mindful of the truth that chaste friendships are not only possible but necessary in a chaste Christian life and in doing so, provide encouragement to one another in forming and sustaining them. (Support) 5. Live lives that may serve as good examples to others. (Good Example) We presently have a men’s group in Nassau County. Easter 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Risen Christ, This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia! Alleluia! Saint Paul tells us that In Christ Jesus you are a new creation! Today we know with the mind of faith and feel in our hearts filled with joy how true that is and whence comes this wondrous and unique gift. It is God’s gift that shows the boundless love He has for us when in the fullness of time He sent His Son, born of a woman. Without the obedient love of the Son who became one like us in all things but sin, we could never have been saved in the extraordinary way that in fact we are saved. We have been saved by one like us. That means that all we are and all that we experience on this earth has been embraced by Jesus, the God-Man. He alone could save us as Son of God. He alone, as fully human as we all are, could transform us, with whom He shares our humanity, by offering us the way to share in His divinity. Nailed to the cross, He overcame that ancient curse of universal death. For His death became the passage way that destroys death and opens the path to eternal life for us and for all humankind. Now He breaks the bonds of death by breaking forth from the tomb in His glorified state. Now the angels can say to the first apostles, Why look among the dead for one who is living? He is not here among the dead! He has risen as He said! Nicodemus once asked Jesus How can a person once grown old be born again? Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he? No, Nicodemus, that is true. But Jesus has made the Holy Sepulchre His tomb to be the womb from which He comes forth to the glorified state that He shares with us. We who have entered into the font of Baptism and emerged from the waters of Baptism are His new creation sharing the life of the One Who today we truly proclaim God’s Son, the Victor over sin and death, the Savior of all humankind. As His new creation, Paul rightly calls us Ambassadors of Christ. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, on this Easter Day as we rejoice, I would like to call us all to re-commit ourselves to being Ministers of Reconciliation in our families and our communities but especially in our Church and in our nation. Too many members of our Church engage in polemic and seek to divide us as if bishops are persecutors of the laity or consecrated women and men are at odds with priests and pastors. These attitudes and these divisions deny the new creation the Risen Christ has given us. Our nation has sunk into a new low in public discourse when political leaders and pressure groups ridicule and label one another or accuse those who disagree with the prevailing forces as being “haters” and “phobic”. May all of us on Easter Sunday, in the presence of the Risen Christ, at Mass, in our homes and in our hearts, put aside those attitudes and commit ourselves to the ministry of reconciliation, eschewing the tawdry and the degrading, and re-affirming the respect and dignity of all, for HE came to be the Savior of all Humankind and today in our hearts and in our world, we proclaim JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN AND HE IS LORD FOREVER AND EVER.
