Venezuela Baptist College “And they…shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.” Ezekiel 2:5 March – April 2013 MORE VBC STUDENTS STARTING CHURCHES IN THE CITY OF MARACAIBO Maracaibo is the second largest city in the country of Venezuela, with a population of 3.5 million people, a city much-needed of the gospel and independent Baptist churches. In a previous report I talked about Yohandry Montiel, a senior from VBC preaching to the Wayuu ethnic group in the city of Maracaibo. In this report I will introduce you to two other men. One of them is a graduate, and the other one is still a student at VBC, both taking leadership in new churches in that city. A few months back, one of the very few American independent Baptist missionaries remaining in the country had to definitely leave to the US, and he asked me if our church would agree on taking his recently started mission church under its authority. We prayed about it and asked the Lord to provide a man that would be willing to travel to Maracaibo and help keep that baby church going. We had done this twice in the past for departing missionaries, and both churches are doing extraordinarily well under the pastoral care and leadership of VBC graduates. The Lord provided a young man, Carlos Eduardo Montilla (above), a graduate from VBC that could travel every other week to preach there, while at the same time, one of the men from the mission church –Miguel Rojas (left)begun being trained for the ministry as an extension student of our Bible College. Well, both these men are doing a tremendous job as a team, and the church is doing great. They actually have attendances of 40+ Sunday mornings (below). Please pray for “Iglesia Bautista Vida Abundante.” They own a piece of land but have no resources at the present time to start building. And pray for Carlos Eduardo as he considers getting married next year. There is another VBC student doing a great job in the city of Maracaibo. His name is Yorbi Ferrer (next page, right). Yorbi got saved in our church three years ago. He is a very energetic young man. Soon after joining VBC, Yorbi started Bible studies once a month in his own home in Maracaibo, inviting relatives and neighbors. He has managed to gather more than 50 people in attendance, and he is now travelling every week there to have services Saturdays and Sundays. I travelled to Maracaibo to preach and baptize the first three believers. He now has no less than 10 more ready to be baptized. There is no doubt the Lord has gotten His hand on this young man. We invite you to pray for Yorbi and the church born in his home in Maracaibo. As most of you know, we have dorms for fulltime male students. And that means we have to feed them three times a day. Lately, most basic food items in the Venezuelan diet like sugar, corn and wheat flour, margarine, pasta, cooking oil, cheese, among others- have eggs, milk, mayonnaise, chicken and red meat –among been in short supply. For that reason, the government is regulating wholesale purchase of food, and limiting the amount individuals can purchase in supermarkets. For example, no single individual can purchase more than 4 Kg of corn flour, or 4 liters of cooking oil during a single visit to a supermarket, and that if they are available. Some wholesalers do not sell to little customers like us (supposedly by government regulations), so we have no other option but to purchase our food in supermarkets. “You can only take 4 packages of corn flour per person… Thank you!” Now, since supermarkets do not sell in large quantities to individuals, we have to have each of our dorm students purchase the individual quota for these food items. So we send them regularly after class hours to supermarkets in the area to purchase each a bit of the food we need to keep our kitchen running. Sometimes they have to wait in long lines (left). We have brothers and sisters that call our offices to tell us which supermarkets have put one or more of these items in their shelves. And we have to rush, because the word spreads out quickly and people rush to get them, even getting into fights over the last bags of corn flour. Now, you can imagine how this affects the operation of our college. Since we cannot purchase some food items wholesale, we have to spend more money buying our food. This is seriously affecting our budget. On the other hand, this is affecting the private schedules of our students. How much worse this is going to get remains to be seen. But we ask you to pray for our country in general, and for the materials needs of our Bible College. Milk 2 per person Milk, In spite of it all, today more than ever, we believe the Lord’s promise to His children: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:19 Thank you very much for keeping us in your prayers! ONE MORE THING… WE WILL BE GRANDPARENTS! Lord willing, our oldest daughter, Becky, and our favorite sonin-law (actually, the only one we have), James, will make us grandparents in September. This is our first grandchild. We are euphoric, as you might understand. And I just could not help telling you about it and sharing our joy with you.
