Welcome to… • May 8, 2016 Ascension of the Lord St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Manitowoc May 8, 2016 ♦ page 1 From the Pastor A new business was opening and one of the owner’s friends wanted to send flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card, “Rest in Peace.” The owner was quite confused and called the florist to check it out. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake, the florist replied, “Ma’am, I am truly sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting upset, picture this…somewhere there is a funeral taking place today and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on your new location.” I’m not sure if flowers were sent to Mary and Joseph (although tradition suggests that he had already died) when Jesus was crucified, but as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension, either note on the bouquet might be appropriate. At least until further review. Is Jesus really in a new location or is the risen Christ present among us? Do I conveniently place Jesus in a faraway heaven so he has little or no impact on my day-to-day life or do I allow him to be an integral part of my every conscious moment? Does what I believe touch the simple and profound choices I make each day or do I relegate him to a time in history which has little to do with now? The Ascension is kind of like a graduation. “It’s over and I’m outta here” can be my mantra or “I will take with me all that these hallowed halls have formed in me.” Jesus never intended to leave us orphaned; rather, through his Spirit, he is with us now just as much as when he walked the roads of Galilee. If he seems gone and unconcerned, the problem is with my vision and my awareness, not with his plan or presence. May we look at the Ascension for what it truly is—not a farewell, but a new way of being present in our lives! In the risen Christ, Mother's Day Prayer Loving God, you wrap your arms around your people and show your everlasting love in the same way a mother loves her children. We are grateful for the love you have taught us through the mothers in our lives: our own mother who brought us into this world, the mothers of friends who have welcomed us into their homes and families, our grandmothers who took time for us, and the mothers who have helped us even though we were not their children. Bless all the mothers of this world today. May they know the fullness of love they have shared and be blessed every day of their lives. Amen. Mother’s Day Roses Happy Mother’s Day. Still need something for Mom, Grandma, or another special woman in your life? Roses are available today at all of the church exits for a donation of $2.00 per rose or 6 roses for $10.00. Proceeds from this event will be used to sponsor scholarships for teens to the March for Life Pilgrimage to Washington, DC in January 2017. Thank you for helping the Respect Life Committee in raising awareness to the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death. The words: “As Jesus blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven” may cause you to look up. In doing so today, you may look up into the eyes of your own mother or perhaps up to heaven where your mother now lives in eternity. Either way, today we think of our mothers, we honor them and we give thanks and praise for the great love and care they extend to us. What better way to honor them, than to look up when we think of them – whether we view them on a pedestal or in heaven where they now live in eternity. We pause and reflect on the many wonderful ways our mothers have shown their unconditional love for us and we give thanks to God for the gift of that love. This is a day to consider how our mothers strive for peace, in our homes, in our families, in the community and in the world. We treasure the priceless gift of faith she has passed on to us, a gift she likely received from her mother - our grandmothers, whom we also remember today with deep affection. On this day, we take time to celebrate our mothers, to thank them for a life filled with many beautiful events, memories and blessings. We celebrate those still here with us today as well as those who have gone to heaven. And we give thanks too for the precious gift of our grandmothers, aunts, sisters and for all women who have had a special role in our lives. When you celebrate your Mother today – look up – there you will understand the great gift of Mother, the love of God and the presence of the Risen Christ! Let us pray today for all mothers and for all women, because in some way, all women have been a mother to someone! HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!! Our parish Christian stewardship is based on prayer, service, and sharing. We are called to give back to God as generously as God has given to us. If you wish to find out more about our parish community, please contact the parish office, or complete this form and drop in the collection basket at Mass. You will be contacted by a member of the parish staff.
