RACE: The 104th Running of the Dipsea Race will be Sunday, June 8, 2014. Each entrant receives headstart minutes based upon age and gender. There are two race sections. The Invitational section starts promptly at 8:30 am. The Runner section starts promptly at 8:57 am. The course is from Lytton Square in downtown Mill Valley, California through Muir Woods, around the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais and down to the finish line at Stinson Beach. The course will be marked, but potential race leaders should familiarize themselves with the route. The distance is approximately 7.5 miles. The course is open except at certain noted locations. Accepted runners will be mailed pertinent information. ELIGIBILITY: To alleviate crowded conditions on the trail we must limit the fields to 1,500 entrants, 700 in the Invitational Section and 800 in the Runner Section. Unregistered runners will not be permitted to start or finish the race. Athletes under 18 years of age must have a parent’s or guardian’s signature on their entry form and must have a parent or guardian at the race. Page 4 DIANA READY TO DEFEND TITLE! DIPSEA RACE FOUNDATION Diana Fitzpatrick is ready to defend her Dipsea title in the 104th Annual Dipsea Race on Sunday, June 8, but with a minute removed from her head start in the time-handicap event as reigning champion, she is realistic about her chances. “The moon and stars aligned for me last year and having won the race takes some pressure off that I’m sure I would have otherwise felt this year, particularly with getting another minute,” says Fitzpatrick, who won her first Dipsea last June at the age of 55. “Now I feel like I can go into it and totally enjoy race day and the training leading up to it and just see how things go. I think it’s nice to have different people win the race so I’d like to be competitive and make it exciting, but I don’t feel a lot of pressure to win.” Since entering her first Dipsea in 2000, Fitzpatrick has lowered her actual race time from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach pretty much every year she has competed. In 2007, her Dipsea race time was 1:08.59 when she placed 48th over all at the age of 49. Last year, even though she was six years older, she reduced her time by more than six minutes to 1:02.41 and she needed every second as she edged out 42year-old runner-up Chris Lundy of Sausalito by four seconds and beat 56-year-old third-place finisher Brian Pilcher by nine seconds – the closest Dipsea finish in 25 years. The nine-second difference between the top three finishers was the tightest Dipsea race since 1988 when Kay Willoughly, Peggy Smyth and Patricia English placed 1-2-3 within 10 seconds. Fitzpatrick, a three-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier from Larkspur, utilized a 16-minute head start. The Dipsea awards head starts based on age and gender. In 2012, Hans Schmid of Greenbrae became the oldest winner in Dipsea history at the age of 72. He finished fourth last year and, in fact, the first nine finishers in the race started in different age groups, a testament to the head start handicapping system. “Winning the Dipsea really was an amazing experience. I continue to be surprised by the recognition I get from so many people; a testament to the Dipsea and how many people -- both runners and non-runners -- know and love the event,” Fitzpatrick says. “It makes me feel very lucky that it’s been such a big part of my life and my family’s annual tradition. I’m looking forward to the training and race day more than ever before.” SCHOLARSHIPS: In 2014, the Dipsea Race Foundation is proud to announce it will be awarding four Scholarships to high school seniors who have either been a Dipsea Runner or Volunteer. The recipients will each receive a $5,000 scholarship if attending an accredited four year school, or a $2,500 if attending an accredited two year school. She then intends to race at Western States and at the Trans-Rockies run in August with her daughter and Tamalpa Runners Club members. The starting field last year consisted of 1,500 runners ranging in ages from seven (Isabella Hughes and Brendan King of Mill Valley) to 87 (Roy Harvey of Medford, Ore.) and 83 (Lyle Langlois of Phoenix, Ariz) plus 79-year-old Barbara Robben of Berkeley, the oldest female. Runners representing 28 states from Maine to Hawaii plus the District of Columbia and four foreign countries competed. SAM’S FOUNTAIN of YOUTH! The so-called “Sam’s Fountain of Youth” on Cardiac Hill was a refreshing addition for the 103rd Dipsea Race. Erected in honor of the late Sam Hirabayashi, the Norman Bright award-winning eight-time Dipsea age group record holder who last competed in 2010 at 83 years old, the water fountain was dedicated in time to benefit runners in last year’s Dipsea. Its impact, however, is far reaching for all people who navigate the Dipsea Trail. “People were astoundingly generous in their contributions so the money came in quickly,” said 1989 Dipsea champion Eve Pell, Sam’s widow who spearheaded the $70,000 fund-raising campaign. “The fountain has been useful since then for several other races with aid stations at Cardiac. People no longer have to cart water from Pan Toll. Runners, hikers and bikers have been surprised to find the fountain there. They have said how glad they were to find a water source just where they needed it.” With the help of the Dipsea Race Committee and its race director Edda Stickle, Dipsea Race Foundation member Eric Ellisen and Victor Bjelejac, maintenance chief for California State Parks/Marin Sector, the water fountain (Cont. top of page) project moved forward and fast. Cardiac Aid Station with water from Sam’s Fountain Led by Bruce Linscott of Linscott Engineering, workers dug a quarter-mile trench through bedrock from Pan Toll Ranger Station to the fountain’s location. Ed Westbrook of Quarryhouse provided the fountain’s design, constructed of stones quarried from the mountain. Eve Pell, the Dipsea Race Foundation and the Dipsea Race Committee are grateful to all who contributed money and their time to build a fountain that commemorates the spirit of Sam, a source of inspiration, with a source of water to aid all who run or walk on the Dipsea Trail. Thank you! Get Involved with the Dipsea Kidz The Dipsea Race Foundation is seeking volunteers to assist with its Dipsea Kidz afterschool program at Willow Creek Academy in Sausalito.
