News from the Head of School 8th Grade Leadership Skills In This Issue 8th Grade Leadership Skills Open House Speaking in front of a large crowd or even a group of people can be a daunting task for many people. Here at St. Paul's we think it is important to give many opportunities to practice this skill. As a very young student, these opportunities may take the form of a class project presentation or through making announcements in chapel. Our children also perform at assemblies each year in front of the entire school. By 8th grade our students are ready for new opportunities and challenges in public speaking. As a part of Panther Pride which meets once per week, 8th graders are taught public speaking skills. The goal in the beginning of Speech class is for students to establish a more confident feeling when speaking in front of the class, so repetition and quick, fun activities are engaged at this time. 8th graders learn how to correctly introduce themselves and others, practicing eye contact, a smile and a firm handshake. They each give 1-minute speeches about themselves and then a 1-minute speech about their partners, listening carefully to each Lower School News (All Things Canada) Middle School News (SMART Project) Middle School News (Band) Middle School News (Eat as the Romans Do!) At this time they also learn how to start critiquing each other's presentation, looking for volume and clarity of speech and hand and body movements. They also learn how to give object speeches. Later during the year, more in depth speeches such as informational and persuasive speeches are written, memorized and given to the class. Before the end of the course, the students will also have opportunities to give speeches to another audience, usually another class. During the year, 8th graders will also prepare for their 8th grade play, which is usually a musical. Special skills training here include memorizing and delivering their lines and polishing their singing performances. Our ultimate goal is to help our students be the best leaders we know they can be. Our 8th graders are proving that is true. Third graders presented an educational video of their study of the United States' northern neighbor, Canada. With the help of Mr. Thompson filming and editing the video, and Mr. McAllister teaching the songs, the assembly was fabulous. Did you know 80% of the maple syrup produced is from Canada? Did you know the two languages spoken there are French and English? Did you know that Inuits are native Canadians and even have their own territory? Did you know there are ten provinces and three territories in Canada? Well that's what the 3rd grade let everyone know at the assembly. It was fun and educational for all. This year the 3rd grade is circling the globe in 180 school days. The next social studies units will take them to places like Rome and the Viking homeland, Scandinavia. They cannot wait, so stay tuned! Lauren Durand Paige Hugg Middle School News St. Paul's Students are Well on Their Way to Implementing The SMART Project Grant! Middle schoolers have been involved in PAWS to Work for the last 4 years, which is a studentbased school community work program. Originally funded with a student-written grant from the Gulf South Youth Action Fund, students have participated in such activities as recycling, gardening, beautification, and outreach. After the first 2 years, a student-taught class for seniors was added with funding from the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation. The project design ultimately involves all of our students and is interwoven with the curriculum in a very practical and logical manner as we are able to enrich the programs already in place. St. Paul's is the only Louisiana school to receive the 2013 $5,000 LEEDS grant award from Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries. The primary goal of the SMART Project is continuing to improve and expand on student knowledge and experiences in the areas of sustainability and service learning. The acronym SMART was chosen based on the objectives of the program. "S" stands for sustainability, science, and socialization. Congrats 3rd grade on a wonderful and informative assembly! The Honor Code means so much to our St. Paul's family! The many joys of composting! Page 3 of 13 Students will use research skills and a hands-on approach as they learn about the scientific/societal principles behind the need for environmental, economic, and cultural sustainability. "M" is for math, music, and museum: students will apply math skills, such as calculating the materials needed for installation of a raised garden bed and a studentdesigned irrigation system. Older students will use the media center to create educational lyrics and music. For example, seventh grade students will create music to teach about the Victory Garden they have planted, and third graders will create lyrics as they study the connection between certain fruits/vegetables that benefit specific organs. Students will design and install interactive "museum" experiences (based on an in-depth curricular unit) in two small "green" cottages on campus, such as swamp, ocean, Native American, and pioneer exhibits where students of all ages can learn during recess. The "A" is for atelier art based on the Reggio Emelia approach. Students will use objects from nature and sustainable/recycled products to create art for both indoors and out, such as garden plant labels and artistic items to donate, and for exploration and, discovery."R" is for reading, research, response, and responsibility. The reading experience is a given for all of our students. Students will write to share their experiences. Students will be charged with identifying and implementing environmental improvements, such as designing improved recycling, irrigation, and composting systems, as well of making use of vertical and curricular themed gardening. Local, state, and global issues will be discussed and possible solutions will be identified and explored. Students will be mentored in the concepts of personal/communal responsibility, with a focus on awareness and action. "T" stands for technology and teamwork. Students will use technology to research, write, and film. The SMART project involves teamwork, instilling pride in personal responsibility and active response as members of teams with common goals. The purchase of a new and improved greenhouse, which was installed by St. Paul's Men's Club, is a integral part of this grant! Students are divided into 4 main groups, with each group subdivided into 3 teams. Each student will have the opportunity to rotate into each of the 12 teams throughout the year. The 4 main groups are the FABLAB, Healthy Commons, the Green Machine, and the Green Thumb Gang. Projects completed or well on their way to being completed are headphone storage for the computer lab, our first vertical garden, a Baby Saints raised garden bed, testing and sanitizing high-use areas of the school, researched business projects, data collection (including weather and garden areas), embossed copper herb labels, repair of garden beds, hot composting, worm composting, library maintenance, recycling, and outdoor clean-up. Future plans include a student-designed irrigation system for the garden and the addition of hydroponics to our outdoor education program. Students turn in material request forms for recycled/sustainable items for collection or with researched pricing for Ms. Malone explains how to build their next creation during the SMART Project. Students enjoy picking some grapes on a beautiful day in the St. Paul's garden. Mrs. Willoz guides her Super Scientists as they measure the gardens. Checking the soil during the SMART Project Page 4 of 13 purchase of needed items. Currently we are collecting 2-liter bottles for mosquito traps and egg shells for making Monster Tomato Fertilizer. Come see the SMART Project at work every Friday morning or join us at dismissal for a delicious glass of Bea's Tea, from a treasured family recipe, on Friday, October 4, courtesy of the Panther Products Team! Sylvia Parks and Susan Malone St. Paul's Students "Band" Together in the Name of Music and Fun One of the highlights of the 20122013 school year was the introduction of the studio band. Under the direction of Mr. Thompson, the band accompanied our choir at Celebration in the Oaks and The Spring Concert and allowed St. Paul's to show off one of the many things that makes us a unique school. Teaching the seniors is part of the FABLAB group of the SMART Project. Mrs. Schwank puts on a hard hat during her Investiture. Thanks to a generous donation from a St. Paul's family, we are proud to announce the expansion of our Studio Band and music program during the 2013-2014 school year. The donation has allowed the school to purchase eight acoustic guitars, three electric guitars, two electric basses, an acoustic drum set, and all of the necessary amplifiers we need to bring the sounds of St. Paul's to the masses. "and on the keys we have...." The donation has also allowed us to expand the band program with a beginner guitar class, weekly bass and drum workshops, and a keyboarding class. Beginner guitar class, taught by Mr. Parks and Mrs. Evans, is focused on teaching good playing habits, basic guitar care, and basic chords and songs. We hope to prepare our young players, 5th through 7th grade, to perform in chapel, at assemblies, with the choir, and finally prepare them to join the studio band in the coming years. Mr. Thompson is also offering beginner drum and electric bass workshops once a week that will focus on drum rudiments, the basics of electric bass, and developing a sense of rhythm. The band is open to many types of instruments. The studio band will join the choir, handbell ensembles, and recorder consort as highlights of our excellent music program. The studio band is open to any student with previous musical experience who wants to feel the rush and joy of playing live music with a group of friends. Under the direction of Mr. Thompson, the band has expanded to include a horn section and a keyboard section under the tutelage of Ms. del Corral. The focus will be on playing together, learning to read music, and learning to improvise as a soloist. The band is under the direction of Mr. Thompson. Page 5 of 13 If a student is not musically inclined, but would still like to be involved on a technical level, we are also introducing a series of workshops that will focus on the technical aspects of sound and recording. Mr. Thompson will lead the students through lessons on microphone placement, wiring, mixing, live set up, and digital recording using our ProTools studio. Students who participate in these workshops will be given the opportunity to assist in the regular set-ups for assemblies, plays, and other events in which technical assistance is needed. We look forward to a productive year and the beginning of a new facet of the St. Paul's experience. Thanks to our wonderful Men's Club for the awesome Snoball Social! Steve Thompson Jeremy Parks Eat as the Romans Do! - 5th Grade Visits the Outdoor Culinary Center On Tuesday, September 10, the 5th grade Latin class visited St. Paul's Outdoor Culinary Center for a Latin activity. In the lesson, students learned about -and sampled!- the various foods ancient Romans would have eaten during each meal of the day. The students first ate the simple breakfast the Romans ate - bread and water. Students followed that course with a lunch of apples and panfried fish. As was the custom of the ancient Romans, dinner was the biggest and most extravagant meal of the day. The students sampled grape juice, eggs, carrots and celery, olives, and grilled sausage. Finally, what meal would be complete without dessert? For their final course, as in the Roman tradition, students ate grapes, nuts, cheese, and bread with honey. All in all, the students enjoyed this informative (and tasty!) lesson on Roman history. Bon appétit! Andrew O'Brien Little Saints News The Little Saints LOVE Colors! Students of all ages gather around Mrs. Schwank to share their love of Snoballs. Just another ordinary day in Latin class. Mr. O'Brien has the 5th grade students sample the various foods ancient Romans would have eaten during each meal of the day. In both classrooms, the teachers began the school year exploring color. In the two-year old classroom, the teachers asked the children to identify and then vote on their favorite color using their Page 6 of 13 name symbols. The children loved the game. The teachers then read the book Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh aloud to the class using props. After that, the children had the opportunity to make their very own colors by mixing two primary colors together. They then worked with small pieces of colorful paper to make color collages. Because all of the Little Saints loved the experience, the teachers decided to expand the scope of the investigation to include rainbows. The class read books about rainbows and then created rainbows in the studio. The rainbows now fill our hallway! In the three-year old classroom, the children created beautiful color wheels. The process was very involved and included the class collaborating together. They began by painting pieces of one color wheel with primary colors and painting pieces of a second color wheel with secondary colors. Once the pieces dried, they glued them together like a puzzle to form two wheels. After that, each child received a bag filled with a variety of colored objects. They were asked to use their sorting and matching skills to place the object on the wheels. They used brushes and glue to complete the process! The teachers have placed the color wheels in our hallway. They are beautiful! These Little Saints LOVE Colors! It's color time!!! In both classrooms, the teachers have worked hard to document the process of the children's learning. The have displayed the children's work, pictures of the children involved in their work, and explanations of the steps involved in our projects. Stop by and visit! For meet location or times, please contact Mr. O'Brien or Mrs. Hugg. St. Paul's News Is that Flash Gordon? Our Cross Country Team has 40 runners from 3rd to 8th grade! Wow! iPads, iPads Everywhere! This summer, the technology department was awarded a grant for additional iPads. The grant comes from the Louisiana's Quality Education Support Fund, frequently referred to as 8(g). The fund is the result of a 1953 federal settlement with several states over offshore drilling and development. The purpose of the grant is to fund exemplary programs in schools designed to improve student academic achievement. An 8th grader works on his iPad during algebra class. Would have been nice if those where around back in the day. With the additional iPads, St. Paul's will enhance student learning through the use of apps and everyday functions of the iPad. Students are learning how to use the iPad as a full functioning educational tool to improve their classroom learning experiences. Something we refer to as, "using the iPads beyond the apps." We look forward to blending this great tool with our challenging curriculum.
