The two events received a phenomenal response from the wider industry, marking the launch a resounding success. Hosting industry SMEs and primes, the hall saw exhibitor and sponsor participation from OHB, Thales Alenia Space, Airbus DS, DLR, Tesat-Spacecom and more. Over 220 exhibitors participated, 29% more than originally anticipated, with over 32% of the exhibitors coming from outside Germany. 2,514 professionals from the space and aerospace industry attended the three-day event, which included an expansive exhibit hall, presentations, product launches, keynote speakers, panel discussions and workshops. The show saw 34% of attendees in an engineering/R&D role, 26% from executive management roles, 12% from academia and 11% from procurement. 45 countries in attendance Among the industry giants in attendance were over 100 attendees from OHB, 100+ attendees from Airbus Defence and Space, 60+ attendees from DLR, Thales Alenia Space, ESA, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Orbital ATK, Sierra Nevada Corporation and Lufthansa Technik AG. Germany 69% Rest of Europe 22% Americas 8% Asia 0.5% Rest of World 0.5% The Industry and Technology Forums provided attendees with a more in-depth look at the industry, featuring over 80 senior-level speakers from organisations such as OHB, Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, ULA, Sierra Nevada Corporation, XCOR, ESA, DLR and CNES. Issues discussed in the Industry Forum included market trends, business models and cross-sector collaboration, with key themes including launch services, ESA technology roadmaps, advanced propulsion technologies, future fuels and the small-satellites market, with the Technology Forum showcasing the latest R&D findings, technical innovations and product development methodologies from across the industry supply chain. This report documents the pre-show marketing campaign in the run-up to the launch of the expo and forums in November 2015. www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 3 Industry and Technology Forums A unique feature of the show was the Industry and Technology Forums, which provided insights into the challenges, opportunities, business models and technologies driving the European space market. The forums brought together national space agencies, commercial industry and academics who discussed a range of issues and questions including the impact of the ‘new space economy’ on the global space sector and bilateral cooperation, the future roles of the public sector and industry – should industry take more responsibility and risk? Government agencies increasingly recognise the need for the commercial sector, and in particular small business, to drive innovation, articulate and deliver next-generation technologies. The industry must also decide what the next frontiers are – should we focus on LEO or deep space, Moon or Mars, explore or observe? Although the proliferation of small sats has had a positive impact on driving growth in the industry, creating new applications and services, it has also posed a challenge due to the increased congestion. One in five small sats is not degrading in orbit as was intended, so there is a tremendous amount of debris to be managed. This has spurred the need for codes of conduct for how to “There have been some operate in LEO given interesting sessions – I like how congested and competitive it is becoming. Furthermore, although small sats today as it’s a good focus on have enabled valuable services such Commercial Actionable small sats. There’s some good Intelligence, there are privacy and security concerns that must subsystems and equipment be addressed. on the stands, with good Moderator of the Enabling Technologies That Will Improve the demonstrations and models. Yes Performance of Small Sats session, David Barnhart, Director, Space Engineering it’s a good show” Research Center, Rob Staples, Head of Launch and Orbital University of Southern Servicing, Surrey Satellite California (formerly Program Manager at DARPA), commented, “We were looking at technologies pushing the envelope in terms of what we think about small satellites. One of the most interesting is changing the methodology of satellites, so here at Bremen the DLR has something called iBOSS, which is a concept for modular satellites – small satellites essentially creating almost any size platforms. The United States has something similar called Satlets. Another interesting technology is robotics that will be put together in space, something that has never been truly done before.” Speaking about the session, David commented, “I think everybody was interested and excited in the topic; in particular it is a topical subject at the moment. I think all the exhibits and businesses here are very excited and I think it’s very good for them to meet at a place like this from a business-to-business standpoint, which is interesting because it may translate to space commerce or space-to-space services eventually.” “I am delighted with the response to our first European Space Tech Expo,” said Space Tech Conference Director Mindy Emsley. “The attendance throughout the three days has been really high, the presentations and discussions have been extremely informative, driven by the exceptional quality of the expert speakers that have participated. We were really honoured to have such strong support from leading executives of the European primes and government agencies. The involvement of organisations including OHB, Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, ULA, Sierra Nevada Corporation, XCOR, ESA, DLR and CNES has made our entry into Europe a tremendous success.” www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 4 Speaking Organisations it´s all about people www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 5 Exhibiting Companies 3D PLUS Crane Aerospace & Electronics GAUSS INSTRUMENTS GmbH ACST GmbH CSL Liege Space Center Advanced Vacuum Systems AB CSM GmbH German Society for Nondestructive Testing (DGZfP) Advantec Engineering GmbH CST - Computer Simulation Technology AG AEM Inc Curtiss-Wright Aerospace & Advanced Composites GmbH Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies Division AES Aircraft Elektro / Elektronik System GmbH Cypress AIM GmbH DEWESoft GmbH Airborne Aerospace B.V. We’ve had good results. It’s been a good chance to network and see what’s going on.” Matthew Davison, European Sales Manager, Sonatest NDT “Our headquarters are in Bremen and it is very clear that we are part of the show; we have supported the event with all our efforts – with a stand, keynote speakers and sponsorship. If you are in space, this is the place to be right now.” Martin Stade, Head of Corporate Communications, OHB SE “The people that we have talked to so far are really looking for something, so the discussions we’ve had have been really interesting.” Sandor Woldendorp, Business Development Manager Space, Airborne Aerospace “There are some interesting talks in the exhibition area, and a nice overview of what is going on in space.” Dr Jorn Burkert, CEO, Aircraft Electrical System “Very positive as far as the testing zone. It’s an opportunity for me to do some benchmarking and see the complementary skills these companies are offering.” Aziz Tahiri, Technical Marketing Manager, ECA Group “It’s our first time here and we’ll definitely do it again – we’ve already booked our stand for the next show!” Elias Hashem, DSI Digitale Signalverarbeitungssysteme & Informationstechnik GmbH, Head of Marketing and Proposal Management www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 14 Testimonials “We’ve been meeting with various people, a couple of the big companies – OHB, DLR – so that’s good for us because we want to be able to make contact with these big players in the European space market. Overall in the show, there’s been a good level of traffic, so we’ve been very happy with that; we’ve hit our objectives in terms of numbers of leads that we were hoping to achieve from a show like this – and yes, it was definitely well worthwhile coming to the Space Tech Expo and it‘s probably something that we’ll look to do again in the future.” Niall Heffernan, Space Project Manager, Curtiss-Wright “We’ve been meeting with a lot of interesting people: experts from the space industry, but also CEOs from the company, which is really lovely. This is the reason why this exhibition is quite good because it’s very possible in this way, it’s quite easy to get in touch – and not just talking in general, but getting down to the point and having a really detailed discussion about it, which is really, really nice.” Robert Boehme, Team Lead, CEO, Part-Time Scientists “The show has been very good... it was really active and lots of people interested in our products.” Alberto Payaro, Sales Manager, Dolphi Tech “We’ve been meeting with a lot of purchasing and managing directors with engineering contacts – basically CDA’s products are best sold to an engineering community. The show has actually been fantastic. CDA has exhibited at the California version for the last three years, and when they were able to create this new show here in Europe we thought that would be a fantastic opportunity for us to pursue European leads that perhaps wouldn’t want to travel to the USA every year.” Michael Baba, Sales and Marketing Manager, CDA InterCorp www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 15 Testimonials “We only do a show about every five years or so; after this kind of show I think we have that many leads we’ll be busy for two or three years – we might not show up in the next year, but maybe in two years’ time, because this show has been a great experience for us. Because it is very much a family-run business – it’s very good relations, everything is very well organised, everything arrived here seamlessly – so, thank you Smarter Shows!” Juergen Bosse, Managing Director, Robo-Technology GmbH “From my point of view it’s a great experience, the fact that we met a lot of new customers here, and we hope that we can go on to new projects with them.” Thorben Konemann, Scientific and Technical Director, ZARM Test Center “I think it’s very, very good, and I think it’s good that we’ve a decent European space exhibition, rather than just a conference. I’m sponsoring Space Tech Expo in Pasadena and I was the first person to sign up for 2017 here.” Nick Potts, Managing Director, Printech Circuit Labs “We were able to more intimately meet these other companies and figure out where the problems and the solutions are – without bumping shoulders with every single person. We had long conversations with almost every single person that we met, and that was fantastic.” Mark Becnel, RadioBro Corporations, President “It’s been very interesting and in fact it’s a completely new world to me. It’s the first time I’ve attended an aerospace event and I’ve learned about the super-cool instruments used in outer space and it’s been absolutely very interesting.” Bernhard Meyer, Uldima Consulting, Principal Systems Engineer www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 16 Testimonials “Today’s show was a good opportunity to meet up together in this city of space – Bremen – where we have a lot of space industry. I’m from a local company here in Bremen, so for me it’s very convenient to come to this fair and meet the space community in the local town.” Robert Simonovic, OHB System, System Engineer – Space Propulsion “It’s very interesting to meet all these people and good to get a better overview of what’s happening in Europe and to see all the hardware that is pretty impressive.” Jorg Weber, Airbus DS, Propulsion Engineer “We’ve had good contact with OHB, Airbus and Thales Alenia and many others, and we are quite happy about it because this is the first time that we have tried to go outside Italy. We are in a good position in Italy but we want to explore European business and I think we have had very good results from this show.” Fabrizio Lazzari, Managing Director, CBL Electronics “We’ve had a lot of interest and follow up with people wanting to come to North Alabama and see for themselves what it’s like there, and we’re already planning to be back in 2017.” Lucia Cape, Vice President, Economic Development, Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County “The expo is perfect. Meeting people from all over the world is glorious. I work for German television and it’s a real melting point here! OHB’s zero gravity flywheel was incredible! I felt like an astronaut flying around, getting stronger and stronger but it was very, very heavy! We definitely got a lot out of the meetings – we got lots of business cards and walked away with leads. It was really good talking to people and having that really quick but worthwhile interaction.” Melissa Molseed, ICP Search, Delivery Consultant “Good audience, B2B meetings is also a good idea, we can have 20 minutes’ more discussion with other people. So it’s a good combination of technical presentation, exhibition and more activity.” Nicholas Ganry, Product Marketing Manager, Atmel “I really like this mixture of small companies and large companies who are suppliers mixed with the conference. It’s a perfect way to integrate with the conference in-between, in which you can exchange, which is impressive. It’s a very good way to do it like that. I really appreciated the presentation style because it shows the agency’s opinion and the researchers’ opinion, which is very good.” Ludger Froebel, Airbus DS, Head of technology Partnerships and Fundraising “I find today’s show actually very, very good. We’ve seen a wide distribution of companies that work in space and companies that we already supply to, but also a lot of companies that we haven’t seen before, so for us the first day, day one, has been very, very good.” Michael Conway. Advanced Ceramic Products, Product Marketing Manager www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 18 Testimonials “It has been great to meet all these companies who like to do space and aeronautics, so it was a very important event to expand our network from our company. Distributed 14 October 2015 The future of the space industry goes under the spotlight in Bremen this November Bremen, Germany, 14 October 2015: Top officials and leading experts representing the entire space sector, including space agencies, satellite manufacturers, suppliers and service providers, will illuminate the future of an industry with global revenues exceeding $330bn at Space Tech Expo Europe in Bremen next month. Two concurrent free-to-attend forums, each extending over the whole three days of the exhibition and featuring more than 80 speakers, will examine every facet of the space industry, its evolving technology and the commercial opportunities it offers. The first day of the industry forum kicks off with keynote addresses from leading space community figures, including the Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chairwoman of Germany’s own space agency, the DLR. Then it’s down to business with a panel on the launch services market that includes senior figures from both the US United Launch Alliance and its European counterpart, Airbus Safran Launchers. DLR experts take up the theme with an in-depth look at advanced propulsion technologies and future fuels, before Teledyne Brown Engineering, Airbus, ESA and satellite builder OHB round off the day by examining ESA’s technology roadmaps and opportunities for commercial space. Which applications and requirements offer the best commercial outsourcing or partnership opportunities? And how will the European SME market evolve in a more competitive and diverse industrial landscape? www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 28 Press Releases Day 2 focuses on trending technologies and growth opportunities, as ESA, Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space analyse opportunities and challenges for transatlantic cooperation, while NASA introduces its technology transfer programme. Airbus and Teledyne Brown reveal how they are working with NASA to commercialise International Space Station utilisation. The DLR and ESA look at potential applications such as global air traffic surveillance from space. And a top-level transatlantic panel discusses the impact of reusability and affordability in launch systems and vehicles. Small satellites are the topic for Day 3. What is their real value proposition and where is the real market? How can launch systems be re-engineered to offer truly low-cost access to space? And which new technologies could further improve small satellites’ performance and cost benefit? The technology forum offers an equally diverse range of speakers and subjects, covering everything from the first private moon mission – sponsored by Audi and aiming to launch in 2017 – to disruptive manufacturing technologies and advanced test and measurement techniques. Several speakers will address materials and manufacturing techniques for composite components. Others will report progress in such technologies as radiation-hardened space solar cells, data handling, mass-saving solutions for space wiring and the use of mission-critical bolts equipped with permanent mounted transducers on the Gaia telescope’s basic angle monitor. Test and qualification are another major theme, with topics including robotic non-destructive testing, modelbased testing for embedded systems and the use of modern data acquisition systems to reduce set-up time and run tests efficiently. The two forums take place alongside 200-plus exhibiting suppliers on the show floor at Space Tech Expo and the co-located Aerospace Electrical Systems Expo at Messe Bremen, 17-19 November. Distributed 19 November 2015 Space Tech Expo Europe End of Show Report Inaugural European Space and Aerospace Event Supports Thriving Manufacturing Industry Attendee and exhibitor numbers surpass expectations at the launch of Space Tech Expo and Aerospace Electrical Systems Expo Europe 19 November, Bremen – Over three days Space Tech Expo Europe and Aerospace Electrical Systems Expo, organised by UK-based Smarter Shows, attracted over 2,600 attendees from 50 countries. Gordy McHattie, Event Director commented, “Exhibitor and attendee numbers have exceeded projections. With the support of OHB and Bremen Invest the inaugural event was a huge success.” Space Tech Expo Europe is the sister event of its US counterpart, an annual trade show and conference in its fifth year in California, which is a thriving location for the space industry. After a run of consistent growth in the USA, McHattie identified an opportunity for a space manufacturing event in Europe: “Bremen was the natural choice to launch Space Tech Expo in Europe. Recognised as the ‘City of Space’ and home to leading companies in the field including OHB and Airbus Defence & Space, Bremen is quickly becoming a focal point for German, European and now international innovation and trade.” CEO of the Messe Bremen & ÖVB-Arena, Hans Peter Schneider, commented, “We are proud that Bremen was considered to launch this important event in Europe. Bremen offers the best conditions for the space tech and aerospace tech industries.” More than 200 exhibiting companies showcased the latest technologies within the space manufacturing supply chain, including components, systems, subsystems, testing and products and solutions on display across upwards of 6,000m2 of exhibit floor space. With the European event taking place every two years, plans of growth for the 2017 edition are already in motion, supported by key participation from major players OHB and Thales-Alenia. Martin Stade, Head of Corporate Communications, OHB SE, remarked, “Our headquarters are in Bremen and it is very clear that we are part of the show; we have supported the event with all our efforts – with a stand, keynote speakers and sponsorship.” He added, “If you are in space, this is the place to be right now.” The response from exhibitors rebooking for the 2017 show has been positive. Exhibitor Peter Bishop, CEO, Bishop GmbH, announced, “We are so confident about the future of this show, we have made the exceptional request www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 38 Press Releases for a five-year contract.” Bishop GmbH has confirmed that it will exhibit at the European and US editions of the show. Furthermore, Matthew Davison, European Sales Manager, Sonatest NDT, commented, “We’re booked for 2017. We’ve had good results. It’s been a good chance to network and see what’s going on.” A unique feature of the show was the integrated two-track Industry and Technology Forums providing insights and lively discussion on the challenges, opportunities, business models and technologies driving the European space market. The forums brought together national space agencies, commercial industry and academics who discussed a range of issues and questions including the impact of the ‘new space economy’ on the global space sector, and bilateral cooperation and the future roles of the public sector and industry. Speaking at the Industry Forum, XCOR Flight Test Director, Harry Van Hulten, commented, “The show experience has been extremely positive. I am very impressed with the representation of the industry here, getting to know most of the people and companies – they are all here, including all the leaders and engineers.” Conference Director Mindy Emsley added, “I am delighted with the response to our first European Space Tech Expo. Attendance throughout the three days has been really high. The presentations and discussions have been extremely informative, driven by the exceptional quality of the expert speakers that have participated. We were honoured to have such strong support from leading executives of the European primes and government agencies. The involvement of organisations including OHB, Airbus, Thales Alenia Space, ULA, Sierra Nevada Corporation, XCOR, ESA, DLR and CNES has made our entry into Europe a tremendous success.” Conference attendee Ludger Froebel, Head of Technology Partnerships and Fundraising, Airbus DS, remarked, “I really like the mixture of small companies and large companies and suppliers mixed with the conference. It’s a perfect way to integrate the conference.” Among the features within the exhibition hall was a B2B Matchmaking Forum, hosted by Bremen Invest, which offered a quick-fire way to connect with businesses through a series of one-to-one, pre-arranged meetings. Hailed a success, the Matchmaking Forum clocked up 1,014 meetings between 230 companies over three days. One participant commented, “It was really good talking to people and having that really quick but worthwhile interaction.” Ellen Horstmann, Innovation Manager at Bremen Invest, was thrilled with the response: “We’ve had really positive feedback from participants; for them it is very worthwhile. Usually when you go to a show you have to do desk research to find relevant companies; now this research is being done by the online platform, so it’s really time saving. They can discuss the project and communicate before meeting in person.” Space Tech Expo and Aerospace Electrical Systems Expo Europe will run biennially, with the next event taking place at Messe Bremen, Germany, 24-26 October 2017. It will run in Pasadena, USA, 24-26 May 2016. www.spacetechexpo.eu www.aesexpo.eu 39 Print and Digital Adverts Publication Description Aero International AERO INTERNATIONAL is the leading 2 half-page adverts; Banner 21,437 magazine for the commercial aviation community for 2 months on the in the German-language countries in Europe. website leading up to the event.
